Is it usable with FreeBSD ? It's a strange beast: A full width EISA card, that runs 2 * 200M discs in parallel & pretends to be 1 * 400M drive. The `pretends' bit is all done on the card I think/hope, at least, there's no hint of it in config.sys & autoexec.bat. I'm asking before I try, because I don't have full flops to rebuild this system back to DOS if I fail (just config & diag. flops), so I want to go carefully. I plugged in a 2.1.0 boot flop, & it got as far as ...... wd0: 405 Mb 829584 sectors 823 cyls 16 heads, 63 secs/track, 512 B/S ...... rootfs is 1000Kbyte compiled in MFS then crashed ( did the 15 sec reboot ) Fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode presumably 'cos it wants more than 4M to install. (No prob. I used to build unices by hand way back when, & have added a 2nd fd1.) Other info I have is: The 2 drives in the sys. are Conner CP3201: nearest info I have is for 2 similar models as listed in CT mag. 1990 Heft 12 P319: Name, Form MB,Interf, ModuLat,Cyls, Heads, SPT CP-3200F, 213, scsi, 2.7, 1366, 8, 38 CP-3204F, 213, at , 2.7, 1366, 8, 38 The Disc Array Controller card is in a Compaq Model 3000: EISA with a 386 (no 387 FPU) & with 2 * 2M modules, (the modules are credit card sized with 2 IDP conn.s) so I can't plug in my spare `normal' ram, so I'm stuck at 4M. Why am I bothering ? I was given the box, & hate to see old hardware turned off :-) & plan to use it as a modem firewall at home, lightly loaded, leaving my bigger better `current' boxes safe behind the wall :-) PS 1742s (EISA) are dirt cheap now (~$40) so I was thinking of buying one of those too, + shoving in a compulsory ethernet. There doesn't exist _good_ driver in 2.1.5r, 2.1.6r for 3c590/595, but there is _good_ and even working driver in -current tree/2.2-ALPHA tree. As for SMC, we _use_ SMC DEC 2104x based cards on 2.1.0r, 2.1.5r, 2.2-ALPHA for a year already, i.e. - they work. Plugged on various kinds of motherboads. What I wonder is what cards are plugged, say, in ftp.freebsd.org and if 2114x based chips work? What other PCI 100Mb cards would you, guys, recommend? > The current driver for the 3c590 also has 5c900 support. Try the one > in current. I regret for the spelling error. Many mail-readers do not have a spell-checker and hence there could happen a spelling error once in a while. More over not every one in the world use ENGLISH as their first language. In fact people from all over the world use freeBSD and hence subscribe to this mailing list. Hence we should be a little more tolerent to those people who do not use English as their native language. Among all the people who subscribe to this mailing list, only you seems to be having a tendency to insult people. Being in a university (Okstate.edu) you are a privileged person and hence should help others to learn more and not to ridicule them. Or does it mean that these days your university teaches only foul languages like what you used here. Let our fellow members of this mailing list decide. Subscribing to our mailing lists is, however, is an action which we also expect people to take certain responsibility for. When you subscribed, you received a message telling you how to unsubscribe by sending mail to majordomo. Being an adult, we expected you to remember this and not spam the entire mailing list with an unnecessary (and futile) unsubscribe request. I have removed you from all FreeBSD mailing lists and would kindly request that you not resubscribe to any of them, nor that you use or abuse our lists in the future. We have very simple rules here which you have failed to follow, and while I do *not* support people calling you names, I also do not support your further use of the mailing lists given that they are intented ONLY for those who understand their proper use. Thank you. Jordan
