This list has just been started to talk about FreeBSD ATM concerns. It appears we are some time away from providing ATM support for FreeBSD. I sent a sent a URL to the ATM list of a 155 Mbps project for Linux (http://lrcwww.epfl.ch/linux-atm), and I have only looked at their API document and listed their file names. I can't see that they implemented this in a device dependant/independant fashion. I don't want to look at their files until I know their use/reuse policy. I would like to start a dialog with FreeBSD ATM people about UNI, API AAL, LAN emulation, PVC/SVC, etc we want shoot for when we put together this code. I am sure we will all end up on a different switch/adapters and that will cause great (sarcastic) joy. I don't the particulars of the various cards, but I am sure some adapters will reassemble AAL5 packets and some will not leading to even more headaches/performance problems. Totally unrelated to the question, but my rambling mind has to comment on the fact SMC will soon have an ATM card out. --mark. The mic gain is either ~full-on or off if the control is < ~10% of the full scale. The test tone causes it to crash here after a few hundred ms. of pops and clicks. I can run it with either vmix or not, and sometimes it'll start and send data to the other end but no rx there. That end is running vat on IRIX 5.3 and an Indigo. Ususally that port is pretty solid but I don't really have any evidence that it is not the Indigo side which has a problem here. regards kim -- kimc@w8hd.org From owner-freebsd-multimedia Mon Mar 25 21:53:12 1996 Return-Path: owner-multimedia Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id VAA12013 for multimedia-outgoing; Mon, 25 Mar 1996 21:53:12 -0800 (PST) Received: from crh.cl.msu.edu (crh.cl.msu.edu [35.8.1.24]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with SMTP id VAA12008 for ; Mon, 25 Mar 1996 21:53:10 -0800 (PST) Received: (from henrich@localhost) by crh.cl.msu.edu (8.6.12/8.6.12) id AAA04378; Tue, 26 Mar 1996 00:53:07 -0500 From: Charles Henrich Message-Id: <199603260553.AAA04378@crh.cl.msu.edu> Subject: Re: Vat on 2.1R? Half duplex with pops and clicks, but it works just fine. You have to grab Amancio's "vat-and-half" compilation, which is vat compiled for half-duplex. I can also put up my binary if you can't find it. I had similar problems on FreeBSD 2.1.0 (VoxWare 3.0-beta-950506) with a Sound Blaster 32. These are the two main patches I had to make to Speak Freely to get it to work for me (from memory as I'm not on my PC now): 1) Comment out the setting to put the device in non-blocking mode (soundbyte.c): if (ioctl(audiof, SNDCTL_DSP_NONBLOCK, NULL) < 0) { perror("SNDCTL_DSP_NONBLOCK"); return FALSE; This was causing soundbyte.c:soundplay to hang trying to write the first buffer to the audio device. It appears that the DMA transfer to the card isn't even being initiated in non-blocking mode, and the write() request returns having written 0 bytes of the buffer to the sound card, resulting in an infinite loop. The "Tick" message is just caused by the signal handler, and your sfspeaker is essentially hung. 2) As I recall, the other problem I had was caused by the first hack. soundbyte.c:soundflush's read() was blocking. Commented that out and wasn't any the worse for it. Seemed to work fine. One other strange problem I observed though. The last DMA transfer to the card wasn't being flushed until the close() to the audio device was issued when the release timer expired. Not being real familiar with Voxware workings, I don't know what the right fix for this is. I shortened the timer to 2 seconds which helps but of course doesn't fix it. I'll go back to looking at better solutions to the Speak Freely/Voxware hacks once I get the UDP-over-proxy-TCP tunnel utility I'm writing done (hate this idea, but I'll take what I can get). I'd be interested in hearing from the FreeBSD/Linux mailing lists whether there are more reasonable fixes given the 3.0beta and the current Voxware drivers. Sender: owner-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Just a couple of bits of new news. I put out a new version of the meteor driver for FreeBSD. The new version fixed a bug that I introduced in version 1.0.10 which caused even/odd only fields not to work correctly. I also added a couple of new modes YUV_12 and YUV_9, as well as a time-stamp ioctl. The time-stamp stuff works in single capture or continuous capture but not in synch capture yet (ftp://ftp.cs.uwm.edu/pub/FreeBSD/meteor.tar.gz). There is a new version of the mbone tools. I included source for everything I thought would be useful. The tools are compiled and there is source, object and binaries found in the file: ftp://ftp.cs.uwm.edu/pub/FreeBSD/m-src.tar.gz It contains vat 4.0a8 and vic 2.7a38. I have included the meteor and spigot grabber for vic, but I havn't been able to locate a qcam driver or the library for FreeBSD. If someone could forward me the appropriate bits, I will be sure to include a compiled version of vic with all 3 drivers next time around. Due to a request by Steve Casner, the FreeBSD Lounge has been moved to sdr/rtpv2/h.261/wb rather than sd/vat/h.261/wb. It is no longer being announce via sd. Those people with mbone access and ISDN links might be interested in the new test shuttle session being announced with sdr called ``Test RTP - ARC Digital Video''. It is running vic/h.261/rtpv2 at 64kbps and vat/gsm/rtpv2 at 32kbps so you should be able to listen and watch the shuttle stuff. It should be running until the shuttle lands this weekend. -Jim From owner-freebsd-multimedia Thu Mar 28 10:07:42 1996 Return-Path: owner-multimedia Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id KAA24030 for multimedia-outgoing; Thu, 28 Mar 1996 10:07:42 -0800 (PST) Received: from mowgli.wr.usgs.gov (mowgli.wr.usgs.gov [130.118.109.53]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with ESMTP id KAA24025 for ; Thu, 28 Mar 1996 10:07:40 -0800 (PST) Received: (from twcutter@localhost) by mowgli.wr.usgs.gov (8.7.3/8.6.12) id KAA13753; Thu, 28 Mar 1996 10:09:56 -0800 (PST) From: "Tom W. The -lqcam is a linux library setup to access the quickcam. There exists hacks to get it to work on FreeBSD. See url: I believe the kernel driver is the cleaner approach. It does not need the -lqcam library. The Linux library accesses address ports on the parallel card and this kind of access is generally handled through device drivers. The -lqcam library also requires running the program suid root to access the memory locations. > Is it possible to configure a single parallel port for both > lp and qcam and just switch cables? If you just remove the "-r", then some people (the people with this script) will be using the vat protocol, and some people (the people with vat 4.0) will be using RTP. These two groups of people will not be able to talk to each other, even though they are using the same IP address and the same port, because they will be speaking different protocols. If vat 4.0 is not usable for some reason, then you should change the SDR announcement to use the vat protocol, you shouldn't just run the old vat. That's similar to people advertising that they're transmitting in nv format but then using vic and h.261 -- some people just aren't going to get it. Fragmenting the user community is just going to make people say that the MBONE doesn't work, and there are already plenty of real problems with the MBONE; let's not make more.
