Dear Chris: Thank you for your email of Saturday, July 20 and your questions regarding support of FreeBSD. Black Sun Interactive's browsing and server technologies are, as much as possible, based on open standards and designed to be platform independent. We are now beginning beta testing of CyberLife, a plug-in for Netscape Navigator 3.0 which enhances its "Live3D" VRML browsing technology with multi user interactivity, such as now provided by our CyberGate. Netscape Navigator 3.0 with Live3D is NOW available on the following platforms: Windows 95, Windows NT, and Power Macintosh. Windows 3.1, 68K Macintosh and UNIX versions are on under development for release later this quarter (3rd quarter '96). If Netscape provides a FreeBSD version of Navigator 3.0 with Live3D support, CyberLife should also be supported. Please check into our website at http://www.blacksun.com for news on the release of CyberLife. Regarding CyberSockets, you may be interested in our Developer Program. For an annual membership fee of $195, our "Developer One" program provides you with full support for development using CyberSockets, our client API. To apply for the Developer One program, send email to: cybersockets@blacksun.com We will send you an application with a questionaire. Thank you again for your interest. To install FreeBSD-2.2 current is simple, the latest SNAP is from 6/12: 1. save whatever info you need on a remote machine 2. get the boot floppy ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/2.2-960612-SNAP/floppies/boot.flp 3. format a floppy disk: fdformat /dev/rfd0a 4. copy it to a floppy: dd if=boot.flp of=/dev/rfd0a Before installing the system get the following: ip address for you box ip address for you name server ip address for your gateway Boot from the floppy and install freebsd over the network. The process takes less than an hour. If you have a PCI bus I will be happy to loan you my SMC PCI card. Is rather important to have a *good* PCI ethernet card for fast video and to not put a heavy CPU burden on the system with heavy ethernet traffic --- all this is on the context of MBONE . "twm" gosh I have not use twm in quite a while 8) Try to download if you like fvwm-95: ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/packages-current/x11/fvwm95-2.0.41f.tgz Besides looking nice , it is kind of handy to have a virtual desktop when you are doing audio/video conferencing . A panel for the mbone goodies and the rest well for whatever you like. Which video graphics board do you have? I am not too busy this week so if you run into serious problems I can stop by if you like. Speaking about Netscape, how does one get sound support under Netscape in FreeBSD? Since the sound support is in the kernel but somehow my GUS Max will only work under DOS. Win95 will not even enable the driver and FreeBSD-current will just keep saying dma channel 1 time out. I'm not sure what the problem is since it worked before. The model that I am seeing here is one in which a hardware codec has the capability of NTSC or PAL output in addition to vga or digital output.
