After installation I sup'ed stable and did a "make world", again without problems. After that I tried to build a new kernel... took the GENERIC config file and removed all unused lines. The newly build kernel didn't boot... it couldn't mount root. Obviously, the probe for the ahc - device didn't find the chip. I booted the old kernel.GENERIC and made a new (stable) GENERIC... which failed to work, too. I don't like the idea to remove the stable src-tree and replace it with the old one from the CD, but I don't want to run a production system with all this junk in the kernel... Ideas, anyone? Welp, I'm back, with the problem of the week :-) . Several times, lately, my box that serves as email host and web server has been getting itself into a state where when a user logs in, sh dies with a signal 11. Sessions that are open before this state sets in remain fine, and I can still log in as _root_ and look around. Everything (swapspace, processes, etc.) seems fine, except for the signal 11 behavior. The only solution I've found thus far is to reboot. Not a happy thing for my users!! How should I proceed to track down the problem? Is it a kernel thing? I know that bad hardware can cause strange signals to show up, but I've built my system using "approved" (well, it's mentioned in the handbook) hardware. HELP! I haven't bothered to get the deltas by e-mail as there is a nice mirror site nearby. I just grabbed what I needed and let ctm do its thing. Many thanks to phk for an excellent way to upgrade. I had one small hiccup in the subsequent `make world'. I happened to have the PRINTER environment variable defined as the name of one of the printers I have access to which is actually hanging off another machine on our local net. This caused groff to fail when called about 16 hours into the `make world' :->. Groff wasn't particularly impressed with the local printer name. On scanning the various makefiles, I found the following in bsd.doc.mk:- PRINTER?= ascii ... .if ${PRINTER} == "ascii" ROFF?= groff -mtty-char ${TRFLAGS} ${MACROS} -o${PAGES} .else ROFF?= groff ${TRFLAGS} ${MACROS} -o${PAGES} .endif ... TRFLAGS+= -T${PRINTER} and later on ... .if defined(NODOCCOMPRESS) lpr -P${PRINTER} ${DFILE} .else ${GZIPCMD} -d ${DFILE} | lpr -P${PRINTER} .endif It seems that PRINTER is being used for both the groff device names and the lpr printer names. Since groff devices must be one of `ascii' `ps' `dvi' `X75' `X100' or `latin1' whilst lpr allows whatever name you want to use in /etc/printcap, wouldn't it be better to have two separate variables here or am I missing something obvious? My solution was to undefine my PRINTER environment variable, restart the `make world' and then rebuild and install a -stable kernel and reboot. No further problems were encountered. I don't want to have to remember to `unsetenv PRINTER' every time I do a `make world' in future so suggestions for a generic fix would be appreciated. Finally, while I'm here, I notice that the lpr manpage lists the spool directories as /var/spool/output/* whilst the lpd manpage uses what I'm used to, ie. /var/spool/*. The printcap manpage has this definition for `sd' ie. `sd str /var/spool/lpd spool directory' whilst the example /etc/printcap has `sd=/var/spool/output/lpd'. I presume the new system is to put all spool directories under /var/spool/output so perhaps the manpages for lpd and printcap can be adjusted accordingly? Please don't take any of this as a complaint since I'm just trying to be helpful in finding documentation nits. My new -stable machine has been running fine for a while now and I'm extremely happy with the simplicity of using ctm to upgrade the sources. Many thanks to all concerned. Things are much more stable now. (Thanks Justin!) Before the upgrade, I couldn't get through a full cvs update i.e.: cd /usr/src cvs update -rRELENG_2_1_0 (btw - is the -r necessary?) It would bomb every time trying to update sys/i386/isa/sound. I'm not sure whether it was just a certain series of conditions that would make it barf there, or if it's a bad spot on the disk, or what, but every time the cvs update would get there, the machine would hang, then crash. When I did get a crash dump, it would crash inside the adaptec driver, I think inside ahc_timeout() or something. Now, when I do the same cvs update operation, the machine doesn't crash when it gets to /usr/src/sys/i386/isa/sound. :) It just resets the SCSI bus!? All of the pending disk operations continue, though, after the bus reset. (I haven't tried any stuff with my DAT drive at the same time, though, so I don't know if tape operations would get hosed.) I suppose this *could* be a termination problem, or some other cabling problem, but I find it hard to believe that I could pound the disk pretty hard with things like bonnie and iozone, and do 3 compiles at a time without a glitch, if there is a hardware problem. I have the Atlas drive on an internal ribbon cable, the cdrom and DAT drives are external. Anyway, this isn't a huge problem or anything. Things are *very* stable here. I can run 3 compiles, Netscape, and various other things at the same time, no blips, no glitches. (I could do more with more ram.) Is the bus >reset supposed to happen? Here are the kernel messages I get: The bus reset is part of the timeout recovery code that I think I finially have working reliably. What shouldn't happen is the initial timeout and I'm still investigating what could be causing this. The Linux driver seems to be having a much worse time of it lately with timeouts happening, but I think this is related to those same problems. It has something to do with how we initialze the termination settings on the card I think. When I find out for sure, you'll see commit mail. > I have options AHC_TAGENABLE in my kernel config file, do I need >anything to do with the SCB paging? Does it increase performance? Since you only have 4 SCBs, SCB paging should increase performance, but you may want to wait another week since Satoshi has already made the current version of the code fail using his 6 disk CCD array, and I haven't gotten word back on the patch I sent him to correct the problem. > I suppose this *could* be a termination problem, or some other >cabling problem, but I find it hard to believe that I could pound the disk >pretty hard with things like bonnie and iozone, and do 3 compiles at a time >without a glitch, if there is a hardware problem. Does this have the same effect on FreeBSD, or are there other things to tune? options NMBCLUSTERS=4096 Thanks for your help From owner-freebsd-stable Sat May 4 08:28:01 1996 Return-Path: owner-stable Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id IAA10975 for stable-outgoing; Sat, 4 May 1996 08:28:01 -0700 (PDT) Received: from crash.ops.neosoft.com (root@crash.ops.NeoSoft.COM [206.109.4.50]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with ESMTP id IAA10867 Sat, 4 May 1996 08:27:46 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from dbaker@localhost) by crash.ops.neosoft.com (8.7.5/8.7.3) id KAA06767; Sat, 4 May 1996 10:27:30 -0500 (CDT) From: Daniel Baker Message-Id: <199605041527.KAA06767@crash.ops.neosoft.com> Subject: Compiling today's -STABLE To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org, freebsd-questions@freebsd.org, freebsd-hackers@freebsd.org Date: Sat, 4 May 1996 10:27:30 -0500 (CDT) X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL24 ME8a] Content-Type: text Sender: owner-stable@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Hey.. I'm CCing the list since I did not find this information in one location, rather spread between several different mails in the archive. My main motivation was running Netscape, but I would also like to know what is required for IBCS2 and BSDI. I'm running a mostly -stable system. What I did... * Create /compat/linux * Install the linux_lib-1.0.tgz package found on freefall * recompiled kernel with 'options COMPAT_LINUX' (necessary?) * loaded the /lkm/linux_mod.o with the following: modstat | grep _linux || modload -u -o /tmp/linux_mod -e \ linux_init -q /lkm/linux_mod.o * Added the following to environment (/etc/profile) RESOLV_HOST_CONF=/compat/linux/etc/host.conf; export RESOLV_HOST_CONF XKEYSYMDB=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XKeysymDB; export XKEYSYMDB XNLSPATH=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/nls; export XNLSPATH XAPPLRESDIR=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults; export XAPPLRESDIR * Added the following to /compat/linux/etc/host.conf order hosts, bind * Installed nls.dir from Netscape distribution Gotchas along the way.... * I had to remove the Linux ELF support that I had been using with NetBSD. I assume that I cannot run Linux ELF under FreeBSD. * Netscape got EOT with the nls.dir that I had been using from R6. Known problem, but did not seem to bother it on NetBSD. * Figuring out syntax to modload LKMs From owner-freebsd-stable Sat May 4 11:17:47 1996 Return-Path: owner-stable Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id LAA18445 for stable-outgoing; Sat, 4 May 1996 11:17:47 -0700 (PDT) Received: from palmer.demon.co.uk (palmer.demon.co.uk [158.152.50.150]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with ESMTP id LAA18440 for ; Sat, 4 May 1996 11:17:41 -0700 (PDT) Received: from palmer.demon.co.uk (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by palmer.demon.co.uk (sendmail/PALMER-1) with ESMTP id RAA05046 ; Sat, 4 May 1996 17:14:01 +0100 (BST) To: Daniel Baker cc: freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG From: "Gary Palmer" Subject: Re: Compiling today's -STABLE In-reply-to: Your message of "Sat, 04 May 1996 10:27:30 CDT." <199605041527.KAA06767@crash.ops.neosoft.com> Date: Sat, 04 May 1996 17:14:00 +0100 Message-ID: <5044.831226440@palmer.demon.co.uk> Sender: owner-stable@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk [GROSS CC:'ing of questions and hackers removed] Daniel Baker wrote in message ID <199605041527.KAA06767@crash.ops.neosoft.com>: > Hey.. > > Has anyone else had any problems with compiling today's -STABLE? > > Right towards the end of the make world, I get a: > > ===> usr.bin/dig > cc -O -I/usr/src/usr.bin/dig/../../usr.sbin/nslookup -o dig dig.o debug.o > list.o send.o subr.o > debug.o: Undefined symbol `_iso_ntoa' referenced from text segment > list.o: Undefined symbol `_iso_ntoa' referenced from text segment > *** Error code 1 > > Stop. > *** Error code 1 > > Stop. > *** Error code 1 > > Stop. Don't use a -current libc.so.3.0. It doesn't have the iso networking funtions anymore. Nuke it and try rebuilding. The problem is that ISO (and a couple of other networking families) don't exist in -current anymore, and the support functions don't exist in the -current libc anymore either, so if you have a -current libc in /usr/lib and try to compile -stable (which still does have the protocol families) you hit the above problem. Most of my problems related to the fact that libc has been upgraded from v2.2 to v3.0 between stable and current. I had to take out all the binaries, replace them with 2.1, re-sup stable, and make world, but it does work. -- j. +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | James FitzGibbon james@expresslane.ca | | Technical Operations Voice/Fax: 416-239-3765/3279 | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ From owner-freebsd-stable Sat May 4 15:14:58 1996 Return-Path: owner-stable Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id PAA05661 for stable-outgoing; Sat, 4 May 1996 15:14:58 -0700 (PDT) Received: from falcon.tioga.com (root@falcon.tioga.com [205.146.65.5]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with ESMTP id PAA05656 for ; Sat, 4 May 1996 15:14:56 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from tbalfe@localhost) by falcon.tioga.com (8.7.5/8.6.12) id SAA11356; Sat, 4 May 1996 18:15:25 GMT Date: Sat, 4 May 1996 18:15:24 +0000 () From: Thomas J Balfe To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Subject: getpwent.c Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-stable@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Was this changed? 17556 getpwent.c 19610 getpwent.c The newer and smaller one doesn't seem to work... ======================================================================== Thomas J Balfe tbalfe@tioga.com President http://www.tioga.com/ Tioga Communications, Inc 814-867-4770 ======================================================================== From owner-freebsd-stable Sat May 4 15:33:31 1996 Return-Path: owner-stable Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id PAA06765 for stable-outgoing; Sat, 4 May 1996 15:33:31 -0700 (PDT) Received: from irbs.irbs.com (irbs.com [199.182.75.129]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with ESMTP id PAA06741 for ; Sat, 4 May 1996 15:33:08 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from jc@localhost) by irbs.irbs.com (8.7.5/8.6.6) id SAA09640 for freebsd-stable@freebsd.org; Sat, 4 May 1996 18:32:08 -0400 (EDT) From: John Capo Message-Id: <199605042232.SAA09640@irbs.irbs.com> Subject: FS corruption during rm -fr To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Date: Sat, 4 May 1996 18:32:06 -0400 (EDT) X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL11 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-stable@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk irbs 1# ls -alR play total 3 drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 512 May 4 15:48 . drwxr-xr-x 14 root wheel 512 May 4 16:01 .. drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 512 May 4 15:47 stable play/stable: total 2 drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 512 May 4 15:47 . drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 512 May 4 15:48 .. irbs 2# rm -fr play rm: play/stable: Directory not empty rm: play: Directory not empty The same type of corruption has happened 5 times in the last 2 days.
