Yes, it seriously breaks both HTTP standards and conforming browsers (Lynx is nearest example, and maybe Tango). All pages without charset= treated as strictly 8859-1 pages per standards! I'd like to see FreeBSD following standards too independently of amount of lamers which not specify charset= for their HTML pages. If we consider this thing from another point of view (forget about standards), we realise that it is really difficult to find something at Japanese HTML page without charset= because ASCII chars are hidden among other ISO8859-1 junk. Don't tell me about Japanese-Audetect, it is confused with Russian pages which treated as Japanese ones. Also I don't understand why I forced to manually switch to EUC encoding when I walk into Japanese page while the browser itself must do it for me automatically. So, please restore this thing somehow to see our hanbook at FreeBSD WWW with charset= -- Andrey A. Until I have a chance to portify the SGML tools (should be fairly soon now), I will keep -current and -stable in sync. -john From owner-cvs-doc Sat Jun 21 02:44:54 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id CAA21353 for cvs-doc-outgoing; Sat, 21 Jun 1997 02:44:54 -0700 (PDT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.FreeBSD.ORG [204.216.27.21]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id CAA21264; Sat, 21 Jun 1997 02:43:10 -0700 (PDT) From: Satoshi Asami Received: (from asami@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id CAA29997; Sat, 21 Jun 1997 02:42:38 -0700 (PDT) Date: Sat, 21 Jun 1997 02:42:38 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199706210942.CAA29997@freefall.freebsd.org> To: cvs-committers@FreeBSD.ORG, cvs-all@FreeBSD.ORG, cvs-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: cvs commit: doc/ja_JP.EUC/handbook Makefile Sender: owner-cvs-doc@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk asami 1997/06/21 02:42:38 PDT Modified files: ja_JP.EUC/handbook Makefile Log: Add SGMLOPTS back.
