It was to get calls to the ntohl() etc. functions linted in all cases. The bugs near here have nothing to do with linting the gcc macros. __GNUC__ is not defined when the "compiler" is lint, so lint never sees these macros. The bugs are: 1. There is a redundant BYTE_ORDER == BIG_ENDIAN test and associated dead code. 2. There are no prototypes for the ntohl() etc. _functions_. Changing the lint test broke the linting of calls to these these functions. 3. The HTOHL() etc. macros are not documented. See the NetBSD endian.h for the (obvious) fixes for (1) and (2) and for not-so-obvious other improvements. Lite2 has a different mechanism of setting it (compiled into vfs_conf.c), but we have a dynamic system in place. This could probably be better done via a runtime configure flag in the VFS_SET() VFS declaration, perhaps VFCF_LOCAL, and have the VFS code propagate this down into MNT_LOCAL at mount time. The other FS's would need to be updated, havinf UFS and MSDOSFS filesystems without MNT_LOCAL breaks a few things.. the man page rebuild scans for local filesystems and currently fails, I suspect that other tools like find and tar with their "local filesystem only" modes might be affected. This hack is going to be used with Secure RPC to duplicate a feature of STREAMS which has no real counterpart in sockets (with STREAMS/TLI, you can apparently use t_getinfo() to learn UID of a local process on the other side of a transport endpoint). What happens is this: the client sets up a sendmsg() call with ancillary data using the SCM_CREDS socket-level control message type. It does not need to fill in the structure. When the kernel notices the data, unp_internalize() fills in the cmesgcred structure with the sending process' credentials (UID, EUID, GID, and ancillary groups). This data is later delivered to the receiving process. The receiver can then perform the follwing tests: - Did the client send ancillary data? o Yes, proceed. o No, refuse to authenticate the client. - The the client send data of type SCM_CREDS? o Yes, proceed. o No, refuse to authenticate the client. - Is the cmsgcred structure the right size? o Yes, proceed. o No, signal a possible error. The receiver can now inspect the credential information and use it to authenticate the client. Use a new function gettime(). The current version >> just forces atomicicity without fixing precision or efficiency bugs. >> Simplified some related valid accesses by using the central function. > >Are you also going to fix the places where mono_time isn't accessed >in an atomic manner? Not for a while. Most of the accesses are atomic enough: In init_main.c:proc0_post(), ISTR that there was no problem because the whole routine ran at splhigh(), but I think running at splhigh() was a bug. In uipc_socket2.c:sodropablereq(), msdosfs_vnode.c:deget() and ufs_vnops.c:ufs_vinit() a random value is wanted, so non-atomicicity and volatility are features. In any case, the accesses are of the form mono_time.tv_sec, so they are atomic on most machines (but not volatile). There are lots of accesses to `time' that are only nonvolatile in practice because they have the form time.tv_sec. This is buggy in practice for another reason: `time' lags the time given by microtime(&tv) by up to 10 msec, so times read using different methods may be inconsistent. E.g., if `time' is {0, 990001}, then gettimeofday() may give {1, 0}. If a file is created within the next 9999 usec, then its modtime will be {0, 0}, which appears to be in the past. I just noticed that `time' is still declared volatile when storage for it is allocated in kern_clock.c. It takes the -pedantic option to gcc to get a warning about this :-(. They are all of the form time.tv_sec, which is atomic on i386's, at least with CC=gcc. Syscons should use mono_time instead of `time', since `time' may go backwards or jump forwards.
