I'm writing some html-pages to help students use FreeBSD for pretty much everything they do using Chalmers's Sun-machines. Right now I'm writing a quick PPP document to make it easier for people here at Chalmers to connect to Chalmers from home. I'm using kernel-PPP and started to write about adding the PPP pseudo-device when I realized that the handbook and faq doesn't mention how one installs the kernel source by hand. Not everyone choose "Kernel developer" when installing FreeBSD, especially not a scared first-time user new to Unix and perhaps C as well. May I suggest that we add: 5.1. Why Build a Custom Kernel? ++5.2 Installing kernel sources 5.3. Building and Installing a Custom Kernel 5.4. The Configuration File I've read through both the FAQ and handbook and not found more than "you need to install the srcdist och kerndist". (I'm not reading this list reguarly) Mvh: Tommy Hallgren(md6tommt@mdstud.chalmers.se) PS. The page is at www.mdstud.chalmers.se/~md6tommy It's all in swedish. :-) DS. Here's how it appears on boot: "ARCHIVE Python 28849-XXX 4.CM" type 1 removable SCSI 2 Sequential-Access density code 0x13, drive empty There also is a LUN 1 device showing up under the same ID: "ARCHIVE Python 28849-XXX 4.CM" type 8 removable SCSI uk0(ahc0:1:1): Unknown If you load the 'ch0' driver for bsd, it will recognize the LUN 1 device as an autoloader, but it's not necessary to use the drive. Ignore the uk0 device. The actual tape drive in the unit is at ID 1. Each tape slot has an ID from 0x2 - 0x5 or 0x2 - 0xd depending on if you are using the 4 tape or the 12 tape magazine. To move a tape, you use this command: scsi -f /dev/rst0.ctl -s 50 -c "a5 20 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0" If you wanted to take the #4 tape (ID 5), and put in the drive (ID 1) you would issue the command: scsi -f /dev/rst0.ctl -s 50 -c "a5 20 0 0 0 5 0 1 0 0 0 0" Then to remove it from the drive, and put it in slot 2(ID 3): scsi -f /dev/rst0.ctl -s 50 -c "a5 20 0 0 0 1 0 3 0 0 0 0" Make sense? It will get about 8GB compressed on a 120M dat, with some of the highest speeds I've seen in quite a while. Great! Before getting too far, you should post an outline to the doc list for suggestions. Also, look over the table of contents (if not the content) of the O'Reilly performance tuning book. There is also a Solaris tuning book I saw in a bookstore not long ago that might be a good to peek at. -john From owner-freebsd-doc Tue Sep 30 00:29:28 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id AAA09386 for doc-outgoing; Tue, 30 Sep 1997 00:29:28 -0700 (PDT) Received: from hcshh.hcs.de (hcshh.hcs.de [194.49.17.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with SMTP id AAA09380 for ; Tue, 30 Sep 1997 00:29:22 -0700 (PDT) Received: from hcswork.hcs.de(really [192.76.124.5]) by hcshh.hcs.de via sendmail with smtp id for ; Tue, 30 Sep 1997 09:29:17 +0200 (METDST) (Smail-3.2.0.91 1997-Jan-14 #3 built 1997-Apr-8) Received: from hcswork by hcswork.hcs.de with smtp (Smail3.1.29.0 #12) id m0xFwkV-0000dOC; Tue, 30 Sep 97 09:29 METDST Message-ID: <3430AA63.343D@hcs.de> Date: Tue, 30 Sep 1997 09:29:39 +0200 From: Hellmuth Michaelis Organization: HCS Hanseatischer Computerservice GmbH X-Mailer: Mozilla 3.0 (X11; I; HP-UX B.10.10 9000/857) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: FreeBSD Handbook, PLEASE correct! So you want this document to be turned into multiple HTML files? > Is there a source of information for tags that can be used? There are a number. Probably your best bet is to look at http://fallout.campusview.indiana.edu/~jfieber/docbook/ which is John Fieber's list of Docbook resources. This includes links to a number of documents with their Docbook source and an example HTML rendering. It also includes pointers to the web pages for the Davenport Group (who maintain the DTD) which includes a Docbook 3.0 'element index' at http://www.ora.com/homepages/dtdparse/docbook/3.0/ > Basically besides titles of "chapters" this document has text that's > in bold and text that's underlined (and maybe some bold underlined > text). Where would I find others, > or am I asking for something that doesn't exist? Hmm. Docbook is more for technical documentation where you want to convey information such as "This is text the user should input", "This is a warning", "This is a note" and so on. There's no markup in there to specify things like 'bold' or 'underline'. > Maybe I just need to find documents other than "newuser" in sgml > docbook book format to get a few ideas. John's page above contains five or six sample Docbook documents. Also, I can mail you the Docbook source for http://www.freebsd.org/tutorials/upgrade/upgrade.html > P.S. Would it be important to upgrade from sgmlfmt 1.3--I notice > there are some changes. Depends what else you've got installed with it. If you're using 'instant' to turn Docbook into HTML you probably want to switch to Jade. The latest version of the ports collection includes ports/textproc/sgmlformat at version 1.4. If you get this then the dependencies should also suck down the correct versions of Jade, the Docbook DTDs and sundry other bits and pieces you need. There's a message of mine in the mailing list archives about this, go to: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/search.cgi?words=Docbook+tools&max=25&source=freebsd-doc&docnum=20 Also, search the mailing list archives (freebsd-doc) for the string "docbook and tools" to get back a bunch of useful messages.
