Thanks for your prompt advice. I hope that the folks writing the scripts for the ports directory can add to the wish list a quick "update skeletons" script that ships with the default distributions. You should know I have multiple systems now successfully running PC/8e (Xe) cards, including a 386 and a Pentium among others, and consider the current driver lever to be sufficient for what is needed. You might consider adding this card to the list of devices. (BTW I'm on 2.2.2 right now, planning on going to 2.2.5 soon.) Second, in configuring these cards I found the amount of documentation available to be surprisingly scarce. While most of the products supported by FreeBSD are documented very well (part of why I use the O/S), digiboard support in particular is almost nonexistent. I would be willing to write a FAQ page and whatever else that would help people in this, so please let me know if you would be interested. For a SCSI drive, this will normally imply that the root partition will = be in the first 1024MB (or in the first 4096MB if extended translation = is turned on - see previous question). For IDE, the corresponding figure = is 504MB. this answer is vague. does the root partition need to end below 1024 = cylinders also? i suspect i'll find the answer to be yes, but stating = it explicitly here would clarify things. 2.14. Any restrictions on how I divide the disk up?

Yes. You must make sure that your root partition is below 1024 = cylinders so=20 the BIOS can boot the kernel from it. (Note that this is a limitation in = the=20 PC's BIOS, not FreeBSD).

thanks for all = the=20 information!

IBM 4.3G wide SCSI HD - fast and extremely reliable Adaptec SCSI controller -- I haven't found anything better or supported by more OSs/vendors Iomega Jaz (SCSI Internal) -- seems to work well with the Adaptec and is pretty fast, although it's noticeably slower than my IBM HD To add some software: Xi Graphics CDE package - sure, it's not cheap, but the $300+ gets you CDE, Motif 1.x libraries and header files, *and* the accelerated X server (4.1). The configuration programs/interfaces are excellent. I had been very fond of the Infomagic Moo-Tiff package (Motif 2.0) until I used the Xi product -- it blew Moo-Tiff out of the water. On another front, I've had bad experiences with the following hardware: Diamond Supra "pNp" 56K modem (internal) -- tried two different units under 2.2.1-RELEASE and neither worked. Support was lacking. Zoom 33.6K modem (internal) -- very disappointed. Seems like this unit suffers from bugs similar to early USR externals (dropped carrier, freezing up the connection, unable to dial, unable to negotiate a connection). Support was irritating. What would you folks recommend for a good internal or external 33.6 or 56 K modem? -- Nathan V. Patwardhan, System Administrator O'Reilly and Associates nvp@ora.com
