If you have an opportunity, could you dig out tcpdump and have a look at the DNS requests that are being sent/responses returned? It would be *very* helpful to know where the problem lies, and an answer to that would cut the search domain in half. The new StarOffice 4.0 beta for OpenLinux "sort of" runs on FreeBSD. It is currently hampered by the non-working linux-mode DNS (and I would like to hear from anyone that knows why it's broken, hint, hint all you budding hackertypes out there), spews a million unhappy warnings about colourmaps (at least on non-8-bit displays) and falls over very quickly. In short, don't waste your time (yet) downloading the 50MB monster unless you want to work on helping the StarDivision people debug it. mike From owner-freebsd-emulation Thu Dec 11 05:13:52 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id FAA10887 for emulation-outgoing; Thu, 11 Dec 1997 05:13:52 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-emulation) Received: from word.smith.net.au (ppp4.portal.net.au [202.12.71.104]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id FAA10879 for ; Thu, 11 Dec 1997 05:13:47 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from mike@word.smith.net.au) Received: from word (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by word.smith.net.au (8.8.8/8.8.5) with ESMTP id XAA00549; Thu, 11 Dec 1997 23:38:41 +1030 (CST) Message-Id: <199712111308.XAA00549@word.smith.net.au> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0zeta 7/24/97 To: Mike Smith cc: emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: StarOffice 4.0 update In-reply-to: Your message of "Thu, 11 Dec 1997 18:33:36 +1030." <199712110803.SAA01510@word.smith.net.au> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Date: Thu, 11 Dec 1997 23:38:40 +1030 From: Mike Smith Sender: owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk > > Just to keep people up to date with the state of affairs. > > The new StarOffice 4.0 beta for OpenLinux "sort of" runs on FreeBSD. > It is currently hampered by the non-working linux-mode DNS (and I would > like to hear from anyone that knows why it's broken, hint, hint all you > budding hackertypes out there), spews a million unhappy warnings about > colourmaps (at least on non-8-bit displays) and falls over very quickly. > > In short, don't waste your time (yet) downloading the 50MB monster > unless you want to work on helping the StarDivision people debug it. Hmm. More testing tells an interesting set of variations on the story. DNS stuff is still, definitely, busted. But if you run with a local XFree86 server (as opposed to Xaccel 3.x) it's actually a lot more stable. Right now all the menus and text in general is still in German, and there doesn't appear to be a 'shared' installation model, so you have the entire 150MB monster in your home directory, but this is looking pretty slick. If you can muddle your way through German, and feel like commenting on features and the like, you should *definitely* get involved with this.
