I'm subscribed to the FreeBSD lists in a couple of different
places, and in both places I periodically get blank messages like this:

> From owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Oct 10 11:51:37 1997
> Received: from sarip.sol.net (sarip.sol.net [169.207.30.120])

Does anyone know why these are sent out, and if so, why they are
sent out so frequently? I know it's not just me, since we've got a
mail-to-news gateway and the messages show up there as well. The envelope
from address is always the owner of one of the FreeBSD lists, like
owner-freebsd-hackers, owner-freebsd-questions, etc.
