However, we are having a heck of a time getting the slaves to recieve the tables from the server. We are trying to setup NIS with one master server, and three slaves. For some reason ypxfrd and yppush cannot communicate with the master server. We've tried setting different things in /etc/rc.conf, but we aren't sure if there are some flags or settings that we're missing. If anyone can give me some ideas, I appreciate the help. Wrong Architecture. Sounds like you may have an older FreeBSD 2.1.x . Which FreeBSD version are you running? BSDI 2 emulation is in FreeBSD 2.2.x only (?), so you may need to upgrade to 2.2.x. If you can't get the BSDI one running, it is not likely that you will be able to get Linux running, as ELF linux emu. requires 2.2.x as well. >I've scanned microsoft and rtr's sites. > -STeve -- bryan k ogawa http://www.primenet.com/~bkogawa/ From owner-freebsd-isp Mon Aug 4 15:32:20 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id PAA02115 for isp-outgoing; Mon, 4 Aug 1997 15:32:20 -0700 (PDT) Received: from news.cioe.com (news.cioe.com [204.120.165.34]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id PAA02109 for ; Mon, 4 Aug 1997 15:32:15 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from root@localhost) by news.cioe.com (8.8.6/8.8.5) id RAA24766 for isp@freebsd.org; Mon, 4 Aug 1997 17:32:16 -0500 (EST) Date: Mon, 4 Aug 1997 17:32:16 -0500 (EST) From: Steven Ames Message-Id: <199708042232.RAA24766@news.cioe.com> To: isp@freebsd.org Subject: Re: front page .. which compat Sender: owner-freebsd-isp@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk > Since there is no FreeBSD binary of the front page extensions (something > that I really think Microsoft should remedy...), which version do I use? > > I tried the BSDI ones (thinking that freebsd had binary compatibility > with BSDI), but they didn't go... should I try the linux ones next? > I'm using the BSDI extensions on FreeBSD 2.2 Stable, but also used them back on version 2.1.5 which I think was the earliest version that supported the bsdi format. In my case, the errors began when expireover was running during an expire. Overchan blocked waiting on locked overview files and fell behind INN. Once more than 65536 bytes accumulated for overchan, INN could *not* write any data to the pipe to overchan w/o blocking (INN insists upon writing all of the data for a channel in a single write operation and, under FreeBSD, would get an EAGAIN error). INN then blocked sleeping for 120 seconds on the channel and retried the write. During the sleep interval, more data accumulated and the write operation failed again. Any attempt to flush the channel also failed. Eventually INN dumped the buffered data to an OVERVIEW! file. I modified INN to retry blocked writes in smaller chunks and reduced the sleep interval from 120 seconds to 15 seconds. I still saw the error messages, but INN could usually write the data to overchan within 2 or 3 sleep intervals. I wasn't happy w/ the above strategy, so I wrote the following program which dynamically buffers data between INN and overchan. I haven't seen any 'cant write Resource temporarily unavailable' errors since I started using it nor have I seen any OVERVIEW! dump files. -- Frank MacLachlan (fpm@n2.net) N2 Networking, San Diego, CA -------------------CUT HERE------------------------ /* ** ** Name: ** chan_buf ** ** ** Description: ** Provides front-end buffering for inn channel fed programs. ** It can, for example, interpolate a buffer process between inn ** and overchan. One of our dialup customers gave me a call saying that he couldnt download his mail through Eudora. I took a log at the logs and it included errors saying that there wasnt enough temporary space to create .pop.username files or something along those lines. I did a 'df -k' and it showed that the / filesystem was full. I decided to reboot the server and after it had booted up, a df showed that about 25MB was free. What happened then was very unusual. I did a df every few seconds and slowly the hard disk space in / got less and less until it filled up again. A few minutes later everything returned to normal and I had about 20MB free again. Can anyone explain to me why this may be occuring. The only thing that I can think of is that there was a heap of email or something queued up waiting to get to the server from our ISP. The /var/log/messages log showed: Aug 6 14:22:24 riker /kernel: uid 0 on /: file system full Is it possible to move the /var/mail directory onto a different partition and then create a symbolic link to this new directory without incurring any problems? This would greatly improve our disk space problem. We are STD (long distance) from all backbone providers so bandwidth is even more expensive than usual Australian rates. We currently have a Cisco 2503 (1 BRI, 2 Sync Serial) as our border router. The sort of alternatives I could think of were getting a terminal adapter, connecting it to a sync serial on the cisco and getting the cisco to load balance...but would that work without having to do something at the providers end? How bout if the ISDN was dialled to someone else? 56K modem on proxy box and peer it with another provider? Any other suggestions? Pros? Cons? The driving factor for this is that they have decided that they MUST have a WAN between their 6 offices (soon to be 5), and the connection to this one little location costs more than the other 4 combined. Anyway, what I am wanting to do is give them a VPN, with a low-grade of encryption. (Nothing fancy, the tunneling will slow down the curious, and nothing stops the determined ;). I was wondering if anyone has a way to do this in FreeBSD so I don't have to recommend using NT. I pictured something like the ipdivert/natd combination, except that the daemon I divert to would set up a connection to the far end and pass ALL messages along to him. I'd recommend symlinking the whole of /var to somewhere else. You don't want too much writing on the root filesystem because if there are problems it's more likely to get corrupted -- then you /are/ in trouble. You might also consider replacing your qpopper daemon with the imapd one. It won't save any space, but it seems to work better :) Regards, Robin. -------------------------------------------------------- Robin Melville, Addiction & Forensic Information Service Nottingham Alcohol & Drug Team (Extn. 49178) Vox: +44 (0)115 952 9478 Fax: +44 (0)115 952 9421 Email: robmel@nadt.org.uk WWW: http://www.innotts.co.uk/nadt/ --------------------------------------------------------- From owner-freebsd-isp Fri Aug 8 04:15:29 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id EAA08657 for isp-outgoing; Fri, 8 Aug 1997 04:15:29 -0700 (PDT) Received: from panda.hilink.com.au (panda.hilink.com.au [203.8.15.25]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id EAA08652 for ; Fri, 8 Aug 1997 04:15:25 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from danny@localhost) by panda.hilink.com.au (8.8.5/8.8.5) id VAA10755; Fri, 8 Aug 1997 21:16:51 +1000 (EST) Date: Fri, 8 Aug 1997 21:16:51 +1000 (EST) From: "Daniel O'Callaghan" To: Kevin Peteron cc: freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Divert Port In-Reply-To: <3.0.3.32.19970808012931.0091d9a0@mail.hughes.net> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk On Fri, 8 Aug 1997, Kevin Peteron wrote: > recompiled kernel with IPFIREWALL & IPDIVERT Good. > added to /etc/services > natd 6668/divert #Network Address Translation socket Forget this bit. > add to /etc/rc.firewall > > /sbin/ipfw add 100 divert 6668 all from any to any via ed0 > when reboot You don't need to reboot, just add the ipfw rule manually and start natd. Any suggestions? iptunnel (I've got two versions of it, ask me if you can't find one) to establish the tunnelling, and skip to encrypt it. iptunnel allows something quite like a VPN, where all traffic is routed to a single machine, which encapsulates the packets, passes them off to a single machine at the other end, that breaks them out and passes on the packets. skip is AT&T software that encrypts all traffic between two machines, which should work in this case, though I've neve tried it.
