I haven't done enough to know what battery life will be once the battery is broken in and I know how to use APM. My unit is P120, 8MB non-parity RAM with one memory slot (I'm running with 24MB), 755MB hard drive (810MB in IBM-speak), 10.4" 800x600 TFT SVGA, sound blaster sound (untested), and some IR port (untested). X is up and running at 800x600 and is cramped but usable. Quality appears to be as I expect in a thinkpad: good. The keyboard works OK with syscons. Minuses: small screen, non-parity RAM, one RAM slot limits to 40MB max, CDROM option requires external floppy. Pluses: I finally have an inexpensive laptop running FreeBSD. $1099 at Micro Warehouse 800 367 7080 (in Lakewood NJ for those outside the US). Thanks, PCCARD people. It will work with the 'ep0' driver, but it (usually??) won't work the zp0 driver due to timing differences that were recently corrected in the zp driver. The ep0 driver takes a bit of poorly documented setup in order to get it working, so it's listed as 'unsupported'. That's not going to happen as long as I'm responsible for the laptop support. No offense to the Nomads, but there are *huge* kluges in the code where the correct fix wasn't even attempted, but instead a 'quick' fix which fixed the problem (but hid the real prolblem) was made. Sometimes these fixes affect desktop units, so applying the patches whole-sale could often times negatively affect the stability of 'standard' FreeBSD installations. In the past I've fixed what I felt to be the worse offenders, but the entire 'pccard' daemon code really needs to be re-written to make it much simpler than it is now. The original author did a wonderful job, but he never finished it so there are portions of unused code, undocumented code, and such that have been extended in ways that are probably incorrect. Now that we understand things a bit better, lots of those extensions aren't necessary, so we should be able to simplify things alot more thus making the PAO code less 'obtrusive'. Adding PCCARD support to an ISA driver is reasonably straightforward (at the moment, anyway). If you`re contrasting the value of your time against the value of a "working" PCCARD ether adapter, binning it may be the way to go. I've successfully booted linux on the machine and I _know_ that linux detects the card at address 0x300 and uses irc 3. The default freebsd installation disk uses irq 10 so I changed that to 3 just in case. I've never installed FreeBSD so I might have misunderstood something, but this is what I did. Booted. Selected visual config. Removed all SCSI-stuff and other stuff until there were no more "CONF" issues to be resolved. (I think I removed one of the serial ports when I tried with the IRQ 3 settings - otherwise it was all hardware that isn't present on the machine). I tried both setting irc to 3 and 10 in the configuration for the network card. The probe-code then said: zp: pcmcia slot 0: zp: slot 1: no card in slot zp0 not found at 0x300 - which seems to indicate that it can't find the card. Now the http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/handbook10.html sais that the 3C589 is supported. Maybe the probe-code should be slightly modified to recognize the 3c589d. astor From owner-freebsd-mobile Sat Jun 21 14:31:34 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id OAA20411 for mobile-outgoing; Sat, 21 Jun 1997 14:31:34 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ns.frihet.com (root@frihet.bayarea.net [205.219.92.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id OAA20381; Sat, 21 Jun 1997 14:31:24 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ns.frihet.com (tweten@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by ns.frihet.com (8.8.4/8.8.4) with ESMTP id OAA08118; Sat, 21 Jun 1997 14:30:31 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199706212130.OAA08118@ns.frihet.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0beta 12/23/96 Reply-To: "David E. Tweten" Sender: owner-mobile@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk I have a small problem after a generally uneventful FreeBSD 2.2.2 installation on my NEC 6030X. The CD arrived in the mail yesterday, so last night, the project began. NEC's Versa series, one of which is the 6030X, has a little drawer in the front of the laptop, into which you can insert a floppy drive or a CD drive or a carriage to hold a second hard disk (the internal one is modular and easily removable), or a second battery. With the CD drawer installed, the FreeBSD 2.2.2 install disk booted perfectly. Installation onto my dedicated (ie, no fdisk table) FreeBSD disk went very smoothly. I bought a second hard disk to avoid NEC's unenlightened attitudes toward Windows95 sharing space with another OS (as documented previously on these lists). Besides, I think I can find a way productively to use 1.4 gig just for FreeBSD and XFree86. So why do I write? A possible reason the CD booted so cooperatively is it seems installation of the CD causes the hard disk to become /dev/wd1, while the CD acts as /dev/wd0. That gives me two choices. I always leave the CD drawer in -- and always boot from the CD, or I can boot the first time into single user mode, change /etc/fstab to refer to /dev/wd0 instead of /dev/wd1 and never install the CD drawer again under FreeBSD. Other strategies produce a panic, immediately after the kernel gets through probing devices. The cause is inability to mount the root partition (because /etc/fstab points to the "wrong" device). For the moment, I haven't been able to come up with a good idea of how best to detect the CD drawer in /etc/rc before it gets to "swapon -a." If I could, that would let me use one version of /etc/fstab with the CD drawer and another without. Changing drawers will always require a reboot; a small label on the bottom of the machine says that power must be off to change "Versa Bay" devices. Anybody have any good ideas? -- David E. FreeBSD does support it, but 2.2.2-R was released before the modified code to make the 3c589d was merged in... if you grab a copy off of releng22.freebsd.org you will be able to get it working... hope this helps... ttyl.. -- John-Mark Gurney Modem/FAX: +1 541 683 6954 Cu Networking Live in Peace, destroy Micro$oft, support free software, run FreeBSD
