I've been looking for a decent search engine to archive a few lists I'm on for me (inc the multimedia list), and this one looks like it deserves a look. I'm assuming that this will auto-grab relevent messages posted to the multimedia mailing list. I don't want to have to bring up Netscape/lynx to go browse for new articles and to post responses regularly. There traffic is low enough on multimedia that there really isn't utility in splitting it up into separate lists anyway, SMTP or HTTP hosting aside. But for searching and browsing past articles posted to the multimedia list as a whole, this would be a nice interface. As for mailing lists, I use , mh, exmh and glimpse. exmh is a tcl/tk interface for mh for further info please see: http://www.sunlabs.com/~bwelch/exmh/ You can index any mailing list and use glimp via exmh to search the mailing lists. webglimpse is a little different in that it generates html pages which then turns around and indexes . For a project , I think that there is a need to have information repositories whose content are controlled and organized . A good example is Bt848 Project Web Page: http://freebsd.org/~fsmp/HomeAuto/Bt848.html It would have been nice to have archived some of the dialogues that we have carried out in the Bt848 project about design/trade off issues. I agree with most of that. I would see the utility in archiving the entire multimedia list in one of these search engines. Like you, I sometimes wish that I could go back and find a specific post I'd seen in recent weeks that I didn't happen to save at the time. An "up-to-date", flexible, controlled archive of everything posted to the multimedia list (i.e. content not moderated) would be useful. The list archive off the FreeBSD home page, of course, doesn't meet the up-to-date and flexible criteria. :-) However, two issues: 1) list splitting 2) web-based posting & new-message browsing First, splitting the list up into separate lists at this point could be counterproductive. Currently, this list is "the place" to look to find out about the latest goings on with sound and video in FreeBSDland or to ask multimedia questions that'll get the attention of the appropriate developer(s). If we fork-off into web pages, it becomes more difficult for newcomers to hook-in and find out what all's going on so they can contribute. Now if the multimedia list was a heavy-traffic list, my opinion here would be different, but its not. Second, list splitting aside for a moment, there's the issue of web-hosted posting and new-message browsing. A web interface is good for browsing/searching archives, not IMO for posting & reading new mail. SMTP and NNTP tools are designed for this; Web tools IMO are still playing catch-up. Now if you were intending on having a gateway that would SMTP-out new list mail and accept new list mail via SMTP-in, that sounds good. But you didn't mention that. Maybe you want to describe what you're proposing in more detail so the list can discuss it and can evaluate which direction the group should elect to go. I got it partially working (works fine in single field--though I'm sure the method probably isn't right), but in interlaced mode the engine seems to be dropping fields instead of frames, giving a cool (but wrong) ghosting effect. Attached is my patch to this point. It will apply to the 970424 driver posted on the home page. The original TDEC computation wasn't correct. Additionally, I've made the FPS code more PAL-friendly, obsoleting a PAL FPS hack that was in there. It also turns temporal decimation off for CAP_SINGLEs so you always get a frame in this capture mode. The problem: despite the databook's description of how temporal decimation on frames is supposed to work (whole frames are masked as a unit for purposes of synchronization), it appears that the engine is masking out fields, or rotating the enablement of the fields based on the requested number of dropped frames. Anyway, I must be missing something. Could sure use a set of eyes with more bt experience. BTW, in the patch, the correct TDEC computation: /*#define FPS_TO_TDEC(bktr,fps) (((FPS_MAX(bktr) - (fps))*2) & 0x3f)*/ is commented out in favor of a tweaked version I was having better luck with. Lets see what happens in about a month. in the January 1997 Usenix conferencing proceedings (for shame, I am just recently read them), {I.Kouvelus,V.Handman}@cs.ucl.ac.uk say in their paper on RAT, they mention that FreeBSD is one of the few OSes that can run RAT. I tried to poke around their ftp servers, but did see any copies of the executables. Has anyone heard anything new on RAT for FreeBSD? --mark. Well, neither single field or full field works for me with this version. Testing by flipping an ioctl(SFPS, 1) into fxtv, for single field (ODD_ONLY) CAP_CONTINUOUS, I get a frame every 1 to 3 seconds, and in between the updates, trash corrupts the image (see: http://multiverse.com/~rhh/tmpimages/bt848-970524-prob1.gif for a snap). For interlaced images, I get 1 or 2 single-field (not frame) updates every 1 to 30 seconds, with less image trash but still some corruption gradually appearing between field appearances. Also, as an aside, CAP_SINGLEs rarely work since temporal decimation isn't being turned off for CAP_SINGLE requests and turned on for CAP_CONTINUOUS, but rather is always left on. This was one of the fixes in the patch I posted. A simple mod. In case it helps, here is some debug driver output for single and double frame continuous-capture generated with ioctl(SFPS,1) and the 970526 driver off rah. Has anyone heard anything new on RAT for FreeBSD? I checked the UCL ftp server and there is a rat release for FreeBSD. I downloaded it to Amancio's FTP site rah.star-gate.com since the transatlantic links are often very slow. On my FreeBSD 2.2.2, this version 3.0.22 of rat is unable to open the audio device. Right now I am running FreeBSD's audio driver... I seem to remember that rat for FreeBSD was developed using the OSS audio driver. Can anyone check that such is the case. This rat release appears to be only in binary -- too bad, since it would be nice to make it work with Amancio's gus driver. -- Denis From owner-freebsd-multimedia Wed Jun 4 19:47:12 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id TAA29267 for multimedia-outgoing; Wed, 4 Jun 1997 19:47:12 -0700 (PDT) Received: from extmx.itri.org.tw (ntx.itri.org.tw [140.96.158.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id TAA28805 for ; Wed, 4 Jun 1997 19:41:05 -0700 (PDT) Received: by extmx.itri.org.tw; (5.65v3.2/1.3/10May95) id AA02125; Thu, 5 Jun 1997 10:37:16 +0800 Received: from nausica.erso.itri.org.tw by mail.itri.org.tw; (5.65v3.2/1.1.8.2/10Dec96-0317PM) id AA23488; Thu, 5 Jun 1997 10:40:34 +0800 Received: by nausica.erso.itri.org.tw (th3.8r) from [140.96.128.126] id AA15450; Thu, 5 Jun 1997 10:26:27 +0800 Message-Id: <3396289D.229@nausica.erso.itri.org.tw> Date: Thu, 05 Jun 1997 10:46:53 +0800 From: Nicolas Tsai Organization: ERSO ITRI X-Mailer: Mozilla 3.01 (Win95; I) Mime-Version: 1.0 To: multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: Bt848 data sheet Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Dear Sir: Could you please e-mail me the Bt848 data sheet and related information pdf file. In the case of the sound blaster cards which don't support full duplex i/o opening a device for read and write will fail. In order to work around this limitation for cards such as the sound blaster you have to keep track of which i/o channel is open so that when you want to read if the write channel is open close it , open the read channel and finally issue your reads to the sound card.
