Hardware: Hauppauge WinCast/TV dbx Model 401 - I got mine from PC Connection http://www.pcconnection.com/ Software: FreeBSD 2.2-GAMMA (should work with 2.2 & CURRENT) XFree86 3.2 or later fxtv version 0.43 from http://www.mulitverse.com/~rhh/fxtv Somebody's bt848 driver -- I forgot which! I think I'm on Randall Hopper's 970604 driver from URL above. If you have a Mach64-GX based video card you'd better take my files. At the worst you could pull the files from -current. Make sure you read the README since it means diving into files.i386. Check the BT848 web page for full details: http://www.freebsd.org/~fsmp/HomeAuto/Bt848.html Plug in the card, modify & rebuild your kernel, reboot, and fire up fxtv. If you need a camera Hauppauge may still have their camera offer on the Web. Grab your serial number and try http://www.hauppauge.com/. Enjoy! Let us know if you need anything else. I have tried to play a MP3 file with splay, the result is the speaker is 'screaming' (sound very loudly--with unidentified sound). 2. I can't play my audio CD. I have tried to use workman CD Player, but it tell me that no CD in drive. (PS: data CD have been used succesfully) 3. How can I fine tuning the volume of my sound card? Thanks for your help.. I'm quite sure that it is not a pnp card, because I have to set the parameters with a configuration program. The card also has jumper on it, to select "EEPROM" or "software". First step was to upgrade to -CURRENT (minor upgrade problems revolving around me accidently deleteing my SCSI controler and having to build a kernel from the fixit disk). Then I installed the guspnp14 and built that. PnP was a pain but finally the card configured and runs. Thanks to all those that spent the time making PnP work, even if it is configure and play. So testing begins: 1) *.au to /dev/audio0 No problems 2) xmcd playing of audio disks No Problems. 3) mpg123 and maplay Warbling. There is a warpling sounds that comes from both speakers when playing from an MP2. These are old MP2s that worked in the past on a SGI and in 8bit mod against 2.2.1-RELEASE 4) cat /dev/audio0 >file.au No problems. Given the report a bit ago about guspnp14 having a warble, I backed off to guspnp13, this sounds fine against all tests. Just a report. Here's the dmesg: since in a previous message you said the PnP vendor_id was 0x3742.... you should add this value in the cs42xx_probe routine. I have been doing all my development in the last few days on a CS4236 which as you say is almost the same board as yours... Also (in the README it was missing) you have to add a controller pnp0 statement in the kernel config file. > I'm still thinking about the irq stuff. Strange or normal?=20 Almost impossible :) but since it is a PnP card, you don't have to configure it, the BIOS (or the OS) will find a free one for you. (hopefully...) > Should I try guspnp instead? He's used Minix/Linux/a BSD too, so he'd be OK with FreeBSD. (Another friend tells me a blind sys op recently asked on one of the lists, about avoiding graphical installs, but that's no great problem here, I'd do the install for him, but I'm v. short of time (who isn't ;-) so I'm looking for something quick & dirty & soon, rather than something elegant & time consuming, that I won't have time for. I believe the topic came up at some point in the past, but I only recall the discussion of theoretical software solutions (plus a sound card) as opposed to anything concrete, or anything employing specialized speech hardware. Hmm.... here is something if you don't mind living in emacs... http://www.cs.cornell.edu/Info/People/raman/emacspeak/emacspeak.html http://leb.net/blinux/ If you know *what* needs to be done (i.e. what constitutes a useful screen reader), actually implementing it shouldn't be that difficult. It seems to me that it should be possible to hack up window(1) or GNU screen to communicate with speech synthesis software or hardware. -john From owner-freebsd-multimedia Tue Aug 5 18:42:33 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id SAA18706 for multimedia-outgoing; Tue, 5 Aug 1997 18:42:33 -0700 (PDT) Received: from rah.star-gate.com (rah.star-gate.com [204.188.121.18]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id SAA18700 for ; Tue, 5 Aug 1997 18:42:30 -0700 (PDT) Received: from rah.star-gate.com (localhost.star-gate.com [127.0.0.1]) by rah.star-gate.com (8.8.6/8.8.5) with ESMTP id SAA00281; Tue, 5 Aug 1997 18:42:20 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199708060142.SAA00281@rah.star-gate.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0gamma 1/27/96 To: Jamie Bowden cc: multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: Re: xquake sound working over here 8) In-reply-to: Your message of "Tue, 05 Aug 1997 08:41:04 EDT." <199708051236.IAA19136@gatekeeper.itribe.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Date: Tue, 05 Aug 1997 18:42:20 -0700 From: Amancio Hasty Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Is one of those things that really help the whole system. fast video, low latency sound, coold 3d graphics, and most important games like quake show off that it can be done on a unix box 8) Cheers, Amancio >From The Desk Of Jamie Bowden : > On Tue, 5 Aug 1997, Amancio Hasty wrote: > > > The sound driver guspnp15 will support mapping the dma buffer to userland. > > > Just enjoyed a nice demo of xquake with sound over here 8) > > > The bad news is that my test program is broken so I have to figured out > > what is wrong :( Funny, because I got my test program to work first > > and xquake didn't work so the situation is now reverse also > > my test program is a FreeBSD binary and xquake is a linux binary :( > > > At any rate, by Friday, I should have the guspnp15 ready. > > > My motivation to get quake sound working? Try this first. http://www.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/snd970805.tgz If the above doesn't work well for you on the MSS, try this one. It is approximately the same as above, modulo a few missing fixes for SBpro support. It _does_ work (tested with the CS4236) in full duplex on the MSS, and allows multiple opens, i.e. you can do cat /dev/audio1 | dd obs=8000 > /dev/audio1 to obtain a nice echo effect (changing obs you can also change the delay). In both cases, the README file contains install instructions. Differences from the previous snap (snd970731): * added all speed/mode/format change ioctls (tested for MSS); * added support for multiple opens on MSS; * improved PnP support; * improved documentation; * improved SBpro support; * several assorted fixes and cleanups; Next snap in about 1 week, when I hope to make the OPTi931 finally working. Major enhancement. We now support mapping the dma buffer to user space for write operations only. This features is useful for games like xquake . So far the mmap features seems to work with the GUS PnP Pro and with the SB16. The latter you have to define BROKENSB in order for xquake to work additionally when you define this feature the provided example, mmap_test.c, will not work. Apparently, something in the Sb16 is causing the dma counter to go backwards only for 16bit playback operations such as in xquake. If you are interested in debugging the problem just place a printf in dmabuf.c:get_buffer_pointer to print the returned value of isa_dmastatus. BTW: isa_dmastatus is part of -current so if you don't have it just go up to ftp.freebsd.org and download from current sys/i386/isa/isa.c and cut/paste the routine to your /sys/i386/isa/isa.c For xquake you will need: 1. a few mods to the linux loadable module so just download it and replace yours: cd /sys/i386/ tar -xzf linux_ioctl.tar.gz cd /usr/src/lkm/linux make make install modunload -i 0 (if you have the linux up and running) linux ftp://rah.star-gate.com/linux_ioctl.tar.gz 2. Install the linux lib 2.4 package: pkg_add linux_lib-2.4.tgz ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/packages-current/emulators/linux_lib-2.4.tgz If you don't have xquake you can get it from: 3. ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/idgames/idstuff/unsup/intel_linux_quake101.tgz A simple test program mmap_test.c is provided in the sound driver directory. So copy it to your home directory or favorite place and compile it. cc -o mmap_test mmap_test.c record a sample session: cat /dev/dsp >smpl now run mmap_test . You will hear a loud pop thats a test program problem then the sample stream will loop . Phew, now back to sound driver land 8) This is a minor sound driver release for the GUS PnP Pro , GUS MAX, AudioTrix Pro , SB16 and SB16 PnP. There is also an experimental AWE sub model. Included Luigi's clean up work . Tnks! Randall Hopper's SB16 speed setting fix . Tnks! Fixed signal handling throught out the sound driver. The problem first surfaced with the SB16 not generating an interrupt on the last dma request and SB afficionados quickly pointed out the bug in the driver. I had to put back the auto dma feature for xquake :( NOTE YOU DON'T NEED THE PNP DRIVER FOR THE GUS PNP SINCE THE DRIVER HAS BUILTIN PNP SUPPORT FOR THE GUS. My P133 Bios supports PnP. It's just that having rewritten the sound driver from scratch gives me a good chance to cleanup the interface...] I am revising the ioctl() interface in the sound driver. In the voxware scheme, there are over 100 (yes one hundred) different ioctls, plus about 30 aliases. The pcm interface alone has some 60 calls and 20+ aliases. In most cases, there are several methods to specify the same actions (most noticeably stereo). Moreover, often one has to issue several calls (one to set speed; one to choose between signed, unsigned, 8/16 bit, u/alaw/uncompressed...; another one to set stereo/mono) to set the data format, and this is quite confusing both for the programmer and the driver itself, since some combinations might only make sense if specified all at once (e.g. some boards could do mono faster than stereo, etc). No wonder the current structure is quite messy, and I doubt the programmer really knows how to use it in a sensible way. SO: I plan to work on a revised ioctl() interface, using only a handful of calls for the pcm part, basically three pairs (get & set): - one for the data format (all parameters in one call, including the desired buffer size, measured in bytes or time) for each supported channel (i.e. input, output, and if a board has more independent channels, they will support all of them); - one to access the mixers (again, in one call one specifies mixer, channel, volume, muting, active sources for play & rec...); - one (or little more) for timing-related issue, i.e. check how many pending bytes are in the playout/record buffers, flush buffers, record callbacks in case of mmapped buffers... I am inspiring to the nice work done on the meteor driver where, at the beginning, there was a nice effort toward the reduction of ioctls to set the board parameters. Are there objections or suggestions on the above ? In the process I will try to keep compatible with Voxware ioctls(), (since I have already implemented many of them, it won't cost me much). The point's well taken though. The pnp drivers are still not in good enough shape to check-in. I boot a kernel with them as needed to help you and Luigi buzz out the latest driver update, working toward making them the standard someday, but I still run the checked-in drivers since they work. For the SB part, it was getting pretty darn close there around pnp11, and then I guess you reworked the DMA code (removing auto-DMA or something) and they haven't been that close again yet. Since it was the result of a change you made, you can probably pick out the problem faster than anybody. First of all the original voxware module for vat seems to me a little bit broken in that it does not check the amount of data read/written to the device, and assumes the operation has successfully completed. Second problem, after fixing that, is that the audio (when doing aurecord followed by auplay) seems to have very frequent hiccups, even when working at 8KHz. This is very strange since I can do audio -f 1 +rec,44100,s16,stereo /dev/audio1 ("audio" is my little test program, which used as above reads from /dev/audio1 and writes to /dev/audio1, using 16 bit stereo@44.1 KHz) with no hiccups and no overruns/underruns with my CS4236 (I am using a P5-133). I will test the snd970805.tgz next. > Yet another snap (actually two) of the sound code: > > http://www.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/snd970806.tgz > > this has been tested with the SBpro and works both in play and > rec. _should_ work with mss in full duplex, but I had no chance > to test it. > Try this first. > > http://www.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/snd970805.tgz > > If the above doesn't work well for you on the MSS, try this > one. One good thing about hacking is that it keeps me in the house so she can keep an eye on me . In our case we both work in the computer industry so she is used to at least being around computer types. I think that if you had a spouse that was not in the computer field or a similar field that takes up all your time it would be hard to keep a relationship. Age helps well at least in our case so we are more relax at least I am . Dont' care to be young again, you know drinking beer, partying , crashing cars, getting on the car and just travelling, all that fun stuff... I am very lucky to be with Bettina and if hacking or slaving away at a computer company comes between Bettina and I the job goes away. There is a awe driver package out that works for FreeBSD, but the SB16 embedded in the AWE32 is accessible using the sb/sbxvi driver pair supplied with the system. Couldn't get the sound to work with glquake and win95 . I am sure if I try hard enough there will probably find a little secret. Satisfied with the video quality of the game re-booted back again to FreeBSD , got back my sound and played xf86quake --- thats the X version which access the frame buffer directly not bad at 640x480 8) So in summary, when we do get glquake support it is going to be fantastic. On a related note, if anyone knows of a cool opengl program please let us know. At the sgi ftp site, I found their version of glquake it requires some work to port to Mesa/Glide (Glide is 3DFX's api to their 3d chipset it is supposed to be close to gl). ftp://rah.star-gate.com/pub/GLQuakeV0_3src.tar.Z The original pointer where I found about SGI's GLQuake is: http://reality.sgi.com/hutchins_asd/ It has a pointer to a GLQuake executable. I think that GLQuake is supposed to be a quake clone for the sgi boxes so if someone with an SGI box can compile it and let us know how it is it can be interesting because maybe we can use GLQuake as the basis for cool 3D apps. The win95 glquake and the soon to be released linux glquake are not the same as SGI's GLQuake. Cheers, Amancio
