Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Amancio: As per your request (slightly before Thanksgiving), I've been able to reproduce this problem with some impunity. I'm running vat 4.0b2 from the ports directory, listening to Charlie talk about the new tunnel proposal for MobileIP. There's a healthy amount of packet loss, enough for there to be skips and pops. Symptoms: - Whenever there's a playout deficit, sometimes I hear a pop, but more often I hear Charlie's voice start to echo (nothing more annoying than hearing a Southern drawl echo, YMMV) - When the playout deficit goes beyond 1 second, the DMA output timeout messages begin. The solution is to kill vat and restart it. PITA, but it works. My current is current from about Sunday night, with the ld.so fixes in it. Hope this helps. -scooter cat /dev/sndstat reveals: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- VoxWare Sound Driver:3.5-alpha15-970902 (Wed Aug 6 22:58:35 PDT 1997 Amancio Hasty@rah.star-gate.com) Config options: Installed drivers: Type 1: OPL-2/OPL-3 FM Type 2: SoundBlaster Type 6: SoundBlaster16 Type 7: SB16 MIDI Card config: SoundBlaster at 0x220 irq 5 drq 1 SoundBlaster16 at 0xffffffff irq 1 drq 5 (SB16 MIDI at 0x300 irq 1) OPL-2/OPL-3 FM at 0x388 irq 1 Audio devices: 0: SoundBlaster 16 4.13 Synth devices: 0: Yamaha OPL-3 Midi devices: Timers: 0: System clock Mixers: 0: SoundBlaster -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Output from dmesg: Copyright (c) 1992-1997 FreeBSD Inc. I think -- may be wrong -- that Randall imported the awe support this summer, and the relevant bits are probably already in guspnp (thus in -current). Then it might well be that by default /dev/synth uses the FM synth instead of the wavetable, but that should be trivial to fix. luigi -----------------------------+-------------------------------------- Luigi Rizzo | Dip. di Ingegneria dell'Informazione email: luigi@iet.unipi.it | Universita' di Pisa tel: +39-50-568533 | via Diotisalvi 2, 56126 PISA (Italy) fax: +39-50-568522 | http://www.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/ _____________________________|______________________________________ From owner-freebsd-multimedia Mon Dec 8 22:10:45 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id WAA03121 for multimedia-outgoing; Mon, 8 Dec 1997 22:10:45 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-multimedia) Received: from gdi.uoregon.edu (gdi.uoregon.edu [128.223.170.30]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id WAA03111; Mon, 8 Dec 1997 22:10:41 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from dwhite@gdi.uoregon.edu) Received: from localhost (dwhite@localhost) by gdi.uoregon.edu (8.8.7/8.8.8) with SMTP id WAA17334; Mon, 8 Dec 1997 22:10:30 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from dwhite@gdi.uoregon.edu) Date: Mon, 8 Dec 1997 22:10:30 -0800 (PST) From: Doug White Reply-To: Doug White To: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org, multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: Desktop Pics Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Hi..sorry to the multimedia guys, if they mind. I have slightly modified the code in sb_dsp.c to try and fix problems. * I have made some enhancements to the vat module (audio-voxware.cc) for operation with the SB16 in full duplex, and to be able to send a pre-recorded file (ulaw only) instead of mic input. ABOUT TEL Tel is a command-line program which can be used as an internet telephone, or to listen to mbone multicasts. It does most things vat does, but with the convenience of use of a telephone (e.g. simple, one-keystroke commands for dial, answer, hangup, mute, input and volume setting...) and can be run from the command line. It can also be run as a daemon e.g. to set up live broadcasts without having to fire vat/rat on a graphic screen. Current version works with both my driver and Voxware driver; has support for PCM, DVI, GSM, LPC encoding; direct input and volume control with single-key commands; hightly improved playout queue adaptation algorithms; fixed operation with SB16 in full duplex; can use half-duplex cards for send-only or receive-only operation. Back when I was on my P100 with a 540Meg Connor IDE, I found I had to crank the frame rate down to around 20 and the size down to around 240x180 to get relatively fluid video on 1 disk (e.g. ftp://rah.star-gate.com/pub/Knight.mps). This was on: P100,ASUS T2P4,32Meg,Conner 540M IDE, Hauppauge Wincast/TV,FreeBSD-2.2.1 Now on a 233MMX with a faster 3.5Gig disk (still on 2.2.1), I get much better results. 320x240 or so in 16bpp w/ frame rate in the high 20s isn't unreasonable. Looking at a recent 76 second 320x240 capture (2300 frames), I see link counts of 1, 2, some 3s, and 8 4s -- nothing higher. I'm surprised that you're not getting better rates given your system config. The process of shuffling the frames to disk is really pretty mindless. It really boils down to whether the disk can keep up with the app, OS disk drivers, buffer cache, etc.. When the OS disk buffers fill, the app blocks and frames start getting skipped. During conversion, this results in all those multiply linked files being created by fxtv. It's buffering the image stream up to 30fps, since mpeg_encode wants a video stream at a constant FPS. One thing to check. Until I or someone has time to dig in there and add YUV support, do your capturing in 16bpp mode. If you're doing this in 24bpp this could explain some of the lag you're seeing. Once we add YUV, this should cut down on the amount of data we need to write by about 25% (according to mail from Amancio) over writing 16bpp RGB. |Therefore I tried to write to a raw partition (rwd1s2). |But, after "Converting RAW to PPM...", which produced indeed a lot |of ppm-files, the next step "Failed reading raw image file". |(trying to convert sound ?) | |Even after looking at the source, I still dont't understand why. ??? Well, I hacked in raw device support at one point for my testing. I dumped it though when I found out I didn't get anywhere near as good a results as when writing to a UFS file system. So I quit implementing it, disabled raw write support, and put in a dialog to tell the user this wasn't supported. The only problem is, during my testing, I commented out this dialog for other reasons and never uncommented it. :-) So now it lets you capture to the device anyway, only to error out later trying to read. In particular, you'll notice in vidsav_dlg.c:UnlinkRawFiles (called to cleanup after we're done with the raw capture datafiles), it always tries to unlink them. This is one of the things that needs tweaked to support raw device writes again. It doesn't check unlink's return so it doesn't error out here. But you don't want to run fxtv as root, or you'll have to re-mknod your device(s). Also, in rawvideo.c:TVRAWVIDEOImageRead, you'll see that its depending on the read() to return 0 to indicate its reached end-of-stream. To support raw devices, there needs to be an "end-of-stream" record of sorts written instead, and this used to detect end-of-stream. There may be some other changes needed to support raw devices, but this is what comes to mind right now. I suspect the reason that performance writing to raw disk devices was less than steller for me is because raw devices aren't buffered and the app blocks a good bit longer writing records to these files. Whereas when writing to file systems, the OS writes occur in parallel with the app, while the app is back getting the next frame ready to go. So basically writing to a raw device isn't supported right now. I don't think it'd take much to get it there again though as fxtv does use 4K writes exclusively for dumping raw video/audio now. If you can think of anything we can do to speed up disk transfers and encoding, I would be interested. Mods to capture and save in YUV, now that Amancio's added it to the driver, should help some. |Another thing I noticed: |dd bs=4k count=10000 if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rwd1s2 gives me |6307378 bytes/sec, running smoothly. Pretty good raw transfer rate you have there. That's about what I get on my relatively-new WD 3.4Meg IDE (6299090 bytes/sec). This is without the IDE DMA patches (i.e. stock 2.2.1 drivers). |Using fxtv on that device lets the disk heads scatter (swap ?) |and Optimize only gives 256x192@24fps with no CPU- or disk-intensive |processes running. Well, at 16bpp, I guess that's about 2.4Meg/s. 3.5Meg/s for 24bpp. Don't know about the VX chipset on the TVP4, but I recall that it doesn't do as well on a heavily loaded bus as the HX. I wonder if the PCI video transfer from the Wincast to system memory could be starving out the transfers from memory to the MB PCI IDE controller. Of course, it could be any number of other hardware and software issues, only some of which I might be vaguely aware of. Best I can suggest is to play around with system settings, driver revisions, hardware configuration, and capture parameters and see what makes the most difference. BTW, I suspect the DMA IDE support in -current will speed this raw video/audio stream writing somewhat, but I have yet to find time to upgrade and try it. That's another thing you might investigate. |Finally, is it planned or is s.o. already working on converting |a RAW-file directly (e.g., a stream of piped commands) to an |MPEG-stream ? |Wouldn't this be the canonical approach on a Unix system ? | |It seems that the intermediate steps use much more disk space |then the raw file (ca. 200MB for a min., but my partition with |780MB free runs out of space already for 1 1/2 min.). I agree--the intermediate files do take a lot of space and (almost as important) time to generate. Up until a few minutes ago, I didn't think that mpeg_encode supported streaming into it via pipe. I didn't happen on any examples of this at the time. But checking the man page, I see there are a few references to input from stdin though it doesn't say anything about the stream format (frame delimeters, etc.). I'll have to look into this to see how it works, but I'm glad you suggested it. This'd be a good thing to add in with YUV support. Consider it on my list. I didn't think of this when responding to this last message, but are you sure you were writing to a character slice device and not just another file in your file system? The "can't write to this type of file" check is in there for Optimize, just not for save, which should have prevented you from doing this. Though you might have commented it out. |This was with 2 of the 3 capture files still enabled in .Xdefaults. |With *only* the raw device it captures smootly 384x288@25fps. No kidding? Really!?!? What kind of skips are we talking about with the raw device only? With no skips: 384*288*3*25 = 8.3 Meg/sec 384*288*2*25 = 5.5 Meg/sec Was this in 16bpp or 24bpp. With 24bpp, you would've been skippin' pretty good. Try "fxtv -debug video", ignore the "Bufs..." lines, and take a look at the others. It prints one per saved frame: 84: Delay = 74158 us (Avg = 65 ms, FPS = 15) ^ ^ ^ ^ 1 2 3 4 1 = saved frame number in the stream 2 = delay since last saved frame (this will clue you as to how many frames have been skipped 3 = average delay 4 = average FPS you're capturing. |This reminds me of another question: |Are there any programs that can work on RAW files ? |Or what is the RAW target for ? Sorry, I should have put "#ifdef DEBUG" around that option. It's more for my testing than anything else. It's not a standard format and for fxtv internal use only. Selecting it basically just short-circuits the capture/conversion process and stops right after the capture without doing anything else. You might want to note that in your web-pages..., next time they get updated. - Thanks! - - Dave Rivers - > > > ---- > > > = > > > Amancio - > > = > > > A while back you wrote: > > = > > > > Just go out and get a matrox millenium with 4MB of VRAM or > > > if you can find one an S3 968 with 4MB of VRAM. > > > = > > > > Cheers, > > > Amancio > > = > > > and - guess what - I went out and got a Matrox Millenium II with 4 meg= > > > of RAM. > > = > > > I'm using the SVGA server; but when I start fxtv, I still get: > > = > > > [lakes.dignus.com]$ fxtv > > Direct Video not supported by visual...using XImages > > = > > > So - I thought the MGA driver (in the SVGA X server) would support > > writting directly to Video RAM (i.e. DGA) - it seems to indicate this > > in the HTML docs... = > > > = > > > Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! > > = > > > - Thanks - > > - Dave Rivers - > > = > > > = > > > > > From owner-freebsd-multimedia Thu Dec 11 08:36:43 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id IAA24228 for multimedia-outgoing; Thu, 11 Dec 1997 08:36:43 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-multimedia) Received: from sujal.prognet.com (sujal.prognet.com [204.255.154.231]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id IAA24223 for ; Thu, 11 Dec 1997 08:36:40 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from smpatel@real.com) Received: from localhost (localhost.prognet.com [127.0.0.1]) by sujal.prognet.com (8.8.4/8.8.4) with SMTP id IAA28232 for ; Thu, 11 Dec 1997 08:38:28 -0800 (PST) X-Received: from ns3.harborcom.net (root@ns3.harborcom.net [206.158.4.7]) by sujal.prognet.com (8.8.4/8.8.4) with SMTP id IAA28218 for ; Thu, 11 Dec 1997 08:35:24 -0800 (PST) X-Received: from hub.freebsd.org [204.216.27.18] by ns3.harborcom.net with esmtp (Exim 1.73 #1) id 0xgBYJ-0005ER-00; Thu, 11 Dec 1997 11:33:32 -0500 X-Received: from motgate.mot.com (motgate.mot.com [129.188.136.100]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id IAA24065 for ; Thu, 11 Dec 1997 08:33:24 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from spearsd@cig.mot.com) X-Received: from pobox.mot.com (pobox.mot.com [129.188.137.100]) by motgate.mot.com (8.8.5/8.6.10/MOT-3.8) with ESMTP id KAA07306 for ; Thu, 11 Dec 1997 10:33:22 -0600 (CST) Comments: ( Received on motgate.mot.com from client pobox.mot.com, sender spearsd@cig.mot.com ) X-Received: from motcig.cig.mot.com (motcig.cig.mot.com [136.182.15.3]) by pobox.mot.com (8.8.5/8.6.10/MOT-3.8) with SMTP id KAA20262 for ; Thu, 11 Dec 1997 10:33:18 -0600 (CST) X-Received: from calcite.cig.mot.com (calcite.cig.mot.com [136.182.45.218]) by motcig.cig.mot.com (8.6.11/SCERG-RELAY-1.11) with ESMTP id KAA15734; Thu, 11 Dec 1997 10:33:08 -0600 X-Received: (spearsd@localhost) by calcite.cig.mot.com (8.8.5/SCERG-1.12B) id KAA29457; Thu, 11 Dec 1997 10:33:07 -0600 (CST) Date: Thu, 11 Dec 1997 10:33:07 -0600 (CST) From: "Daniel S. Here is the release information of the components I used... My operating system is FreeBSD-2.2.5 RELEASE (Walnut Creek CD-ROM subscription) The driver package I used is FreeBSD-ISA_PnP_June8.tar which contains the following files: -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 4995 Jul 8 1996 README -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 13509 Jul 8 1996 kernel.patch.2.1.5 -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 13345 Jul 8 1996 kernel.patch.2.2-current drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 512 Dec 10 22:42 pnpinfo drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 512 Dec 10 22:42 sample I followed the README in the driver package by doing the following... 1. From /usr/src/sys I patched the kernel using the following: "patch -p0 < kernel.patch.2.2-current" 2. Put an entry in my kernel config file which reads: "controller pnp0" 3. Go read http://www.freebsd.org and then help yourself - FreeBSD has working drivers for Miro PCTV, including PAL (I've not tested them with SECAM yet, but they should work). If you suddenly feel a need to apologize for wasting people's time - don't. That just wastes even more time. If you need help with installing FreeBSD, ask questions@freebsd.org. The unit is a standalone IR controller for various appliances and is an X10 IR controller It uses the microsoft mouse protocol so it is easy to use out of the box 8) However to use the extra buttons we will have to define the mouse events in the X server. The above combination is kind hard to beat Cheers, Amancio From owner-freebsd-multimedia Fri Dec 12 08:48:33 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id IAA03129 for multimedia-outgoing; Fri, 12 Dec 1997 08:48:33 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-multimedia) Received: from www.labcontrol.com (isdn.labcontrol.com [194.163.70.130]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with SMTP id IAA03116 for ; Fri, 12 Dec 1997 08:48:06 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from Marc_van_Woerkom@notes.labcontrol.com) From: Marc_van_Woerkom@notes.labcontrol.com Received: from www.labcontrol.com [194.163.70.129] by mail.labcontrol.com with smtp id KTZMCHQI; Fri, 12 Dec 97 16:47:47 GMT (PowerWeb version 4.02r9) Received: by notes.labcontrol.com(Lotus SMTP MTA v1.06 (346.4 3-18-1997)) id C125656B.005C394A ; Fri, 12 Dec 1997 17:47:19 +0200 X-Lotus-FromDomain: LABCONTROL GMBH To: multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Message-ID: Date: Fri, 12 Dec 1997 17:47:13 +0200 Subject: Ensoniq aquired by Creative Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Marc van Woerkom 12.12.97 17.47 Hi! I just visited the Ensoniq site to look for the 8mb sound banks for my Audio PCI card. There (http://www.ensoniq.com/html/creativepr.htm) was an interesting announcement: Malvern,PA December 10, 1997 ENSONIQ, a world leader in audio technology, today announced that is has entered into an agreement to be acquired by Creative Technology Ltd. (NASDAQ: CREAF). Creative, based in Singapore, is the worlds? leading provider of multimedia technology for the personal computer. This strategic acquisition will enable ENSONIQ and Creative to extend their reach in the PCI audio segment of the PC OEM and PC motherboard markets. Creative?s corporate headquarters and primary manufacturing are based in Singapore, with sales, distribution and research and development being carried out though an extensive, global network of subsidiaries located in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. ENSONIQ is a key innovator in the design and development of PCI audio microchip technology and has strong brand recognition associated with its line of electronic musical instruments. "We are extremely pleased to be joining forces with Creative," said Albert Charpentier, president of ENSONIQ. "This merger allows us to further continue our focus on the OEM audio business an area where we have already made major inroads, including the introduction of AudioPCI TM earlier this year. (...) IMHO the Audio PCI sounds really excellent, maybe this sale will increase the chance for FreeBSD support in the future if the card gets more popular and they are willing to disclose the specs. Basically, you pressed a button to get it to listen, it sent out a TV MUTE command, then it sampled 5 frequency bands until sound went away or it ran out of DRAM, then it did a quick FFT and compared against its known samples. The code was further constrained such that it would only expect a limited subset of the words at any given point in the programming sequence, and that it had to be trained for each of four possible voices. Our pentiums ought to be able to perform software filtering on a disk file stream in near-real-time, certainly well enough for discrete speech command recognition, even without such tricks as MMX. It depends what you want. If you expect the world, i.e. full connected speaker-independent recognition of umpteen thousands of words, ainna gonna happen. Kurzweil and Dragon have been fighting for years with megadollars of R&D backing to get to the point where such systems are even minimally usable. Command recognition with an attention-button trigger is fairly simple. Even command-word trigger, where the input is always scanning to hear its trigger word, is not exhorbitantly processor-intensive. I have heard that they have very good drivers for Win95, no idea for NT. Yamaha OPL-SA3 should also be good ones. The OPTI931 (I see many of these boards here in italy) also works and it's dirt cheap, but it's S/N ratio is very bad compared to the above cards. Still, for their price, you probably don't care... [this is in addition to Amancio's suggestion for a PCI card, which at the moment is unsupported though, and I am not sure how easy are they to find in europe] Cheers Luigi -----------------------------+-------------------------------------- Luigi Rizzo | Dip. di Ingegneria dell'Informazione email: luigi@iet.unipi.it | Universita' di Pisa tel: +39-50-568533 | via Diotisalvi 2, 56126 PISA (Italy) fax: +39-50-568522 | http://www.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/ _____________________________|______________________________________ From owner-freebsd-multimedia Sat Dec 13 23:05:08 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id XAA16231 for multimedia-outgoing; Sat, 13 Dec 1997 23:05:08 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-multimedia) Received: from labinfo.iet.unipi.it (labinfo.iet.unipi.it [131.114.9.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with SMTP id XAA16217 for ; Sat, 13 Dec 1997 23:05:01 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from luigi@labinfo.iet.unipi.it) Received: from localhost (luigi@localhost) by labinfo.iet.unipi.it (8.6.5/8.6.5) id GAA01124; Sun, 14 Dec 1997 06:38:09 +0100 From: Luigi Rizzo Message-Id: <199712140538.GAA01124@labinfo.iet.unipi.it> Subject: RTP tools (was: Re: Remote and Voice control) To: hasty@rah.star-gate.com (Amancio Hasty) Date: Sun, 14 Dec 1997 06:38:09 +0100 (MET) Cc: multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG, don@partsnow.com In-Reply-To: <199712132104.NAA06292@rah.star-gate.com> from "Amancio Hasty" at Dec 13, 97 01:04:02 pm X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL23] Content-Type: text Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk > controller and helping Petri for an rtp to mtv glue logic. this is a very interesting project. On the same subject, recently I have wrapped up a small "transcoder" program which can forward bidirectional RTP traffic (both data and control) between two sockets, doing some data conversion in the middle. Code (a bit rought perhaps, I haven't had time to check it carefully) is at http://www.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/tcoder971214.tgz Main use (for me) was to be able to listen the audio of last week's IETF while at home, where I don't have multicast routing, and the bandwidth is too limited to allow PCM or DVI data to come in. In the above case I run the transcoder on a mbone-connected host, as follows: rizzo% tcoder -m multicast.group/portm -u my.home.machine/portu and it converts incoming audio packets to GSM (or LPC, as I like) as they come in. The backend at home is vat (or my tel program for which I am the only user...) listening to rizzo/portu . Worked very well, and it took about one day to put the program together (borrowing a lot of code from "tel"). Another possible use is to run multiple tcoder's to send data from multiple conferences to one vat, or forward from one multicast group to another one (must be careful to loops in this case... the thing works much like an ethernet bridge). In the future I plan to add more format conversions also for video, so if someone wants to join in and help I'd be quite glad. tcoder provides all the glue (user interface, open sockets, handle multiple network connections) so you can concentrate on the real work (decoding/encoding the payload). These things are good if they run on multiple platforms. Currently my tcoder has many FreeBSD dependencies, but I have also a port to SunOS which I will merge in during the holidays.
