However, I noticed some difficulties with these devices at my machine at work: 1. Assume the Iomega has been idle and spin down in DOS, launching FreeBSD succeeds. But as soon as you mount it, the system often crashes. I have to use a MSDOS fs on the jaz but I don't think this is the problem, because everything works good when the drive has not been idle. It also gives an ILLEGAL REQUEST when booting, but I think this is only confusing but non-critical. 2. Using cdcontrol to play audio tracks on the NEC 462, may hang the machine. Here are some debugging outputs: Probing for devices on PCI bus 0: chip0 rev 2 on pci0:0 chip1 rev 1 on pci0:7:0 chip2 rev 0 on pci0:7:1 ahc0 rev 1 int a irq 11 on pci0:13 ahc0: aic7860 Single Channel, SCSI Id=7, 3 SCBs (ahc0:2:0): "NEC CD-ROM DRIVE:462 1.13" type 5 removable SCSI 2 cd0(ahc0:2:0): CD-ROM can't get the size (ahc0:3:0): "iomega jaz 1GB H.71" type 0 removable SCSI 2 sd3(ahc0:3:0): Direct-Access sd3(ahc0:3:0): ILLEGAL REQUEST asc:24,0 Invalid field in CDB sd3 could not mode sense (4). Also, at least the audio stuff works at home with my Pioneer 12x CDROM running the same FreeBSD Version while the idle Iomega behaves the same as described above. Does anybody have an idea what's going on here? Of course, I can live without listening music at work :-), but I always have to remember to access the jaz drive BEFORE launching FreeBSD :-(. Any ideas? Check out: ftp://22gamma.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/2.2-970317-GAMMA NOTE: This release is misnamed as -GAMMA and should really be named something which signifies it's a post-2.2-release product. I've fixed it to roll the releases under the name 2.2-YYMMDD-RELENG, starting March 18th at 0500 PST. Anyone fetching one of these "RELENG" snaps will get Justin's updated 2940 driver bits (as well as other fixes which are still flowing into the RELENG_2_2 branch). The machine will still be called "22gamma.freebsd.org" for transition purposes, though I will also ask our hostmaster to create another CNAME called "releng22.freebsd.org" pointing at admin1.calweb.com, since that obviously makes more sense. I am trying to use HP Colorado T8000es with Adaptec AHA-1542CF host adapter under FreeBSD 2.1. I were not able to make the drive do *anything*, even a status printout (mt -f /dev/rst0 status). When the machine boots, the drive flashes its light and I can hear the tape winding back and forth. But that about all activity that goes on. /var/log/messages: /kernel: (aha0:4:0): "HP T4000s 1.06" type 1 removable SCSI 2 /kernel: st0(aha0:4:0): Sequential-Access density code 0x45, drive empty But when I am trying to use the mt command, I get this: /kernel: st0(aha0:4:0): timed out /kernel: st0(aha0:4:0): timed out AGAIN Someone suggested that termination might be a problem. There are no internal devices in the computer, so the adapter is serving the tape drive only. I have installed a passive external terminator that came with the drive on one of the SCSI connectors on the drive. According to the AHA-1542C series manual, host adapter termination should be enabled through the SCSISelect program if there are only external devices present (adapter at the end of the cable). I checked switches -- termination is enabled. In case anyone knows the switch settings for 1542, mine are: all off, except switch 5. When I use the mt command, the SCSI activity LED on the adapter does not flash. One thing though: the SCSI cable I am using is about 3 feet long. Could that be the cause? Can anyone help me with this? I have no idea what is wrong. I tried to connect a Wangtek drive a few weeks ago and had the same problem. The AHA1542C*F* is a 20-MHz-capable adapter, and as thus known to be more picky regarding cabling requirements. I don't think 80 cm of cable are a problem itself, but be aware that good SCSI cables have their price. Something like USD 50 should not be uncommon for a quality cable. We've been working with a lot of SCSI equipment at my previous employer (including scanners and printers, MO drives etc.), and i remember there were some cables on the shelf that were basically unusable with almost every hardware around. To make sure, simply try out another (possibly shorter) cable. Also if you can, and it seems the tape drive is your only device anyway, try with a different controller that cannot provide 20 MHz rate, like the older AHA1542B or plain 1542C (no `F'). -- cheers, J"org joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de -- http://www.sax.de/~joerg/ -- NIC: JW11-RIPE Never trust an operating system you don't have sources for. ;-) From owner-freebsd-scsi Sat Mar 22 05:21:18 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id FAA24359 for freebsd-scsi-outgoing; Sat, 22 Mar 1997 05:21:18 -0800 (PST) Received: from sax.sax.de (sax.sax.de [193.175.26.33]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id FAA24354 for ; Sat, 22 Mar 1997 05:21:14 -0800 (PST) Received: (from uucp@localhost) by sax.sax.de (8.6.12/8.6.12-s1) with UUCP id OAA05459; Sat, 22 Mar 1997 14:21:06 +0100 Received: (from j@localhost) by uriah.heep.sax.de (8.8.5/8.8.5) id OAA24118; Sat, 22 Mar 1997 14:17:57 +0100 (MET) Message-ID: <19970322141757.CD28551@uriah.heep.sax.de> Date: Sat, 22 Mar 1997 14:17:57 +0100 From: j@uriah.heep.sax.de (J Wunsch) To: nsayer@quack.kfu.com (Nick Sayer) Cc: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Subject: Re: kern/2538: worm burning suddenly broken References: <199703220315.TAA02502@quack.kfu.com> X-Mailer: Mutt 0.60_p2-3,5,8-9 Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Phone: +49-351-2012 669 X-PGP-Fingerprint: DC 47 E6 E4 FF A6 E9 8F 93 21 E0 7D F9 12 D6 4E Reply-To: joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de (Joerg Wunsch) In-Reply-To: <199703220315.TAA02502@quack.kfu.com>; from Nick Sayer on Mar 21, 1997 19:15:32 -0800 Sender: owner-freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk As Nick Sayer wrote: > This bug still happens with 4020i firmware rev 1.27 > and with 2.2-RELEASE. Does this now mean the HP4020i doesn't grok tagged command queuing, or does this rather point to a bug in the ahc driver? I think we should finally implement the `no tagged queuing' scsiconf option to allow this decision on a per-device basis. Does this now mean the HP4020i doesn't grok tagged command >queuing, or does this rather point to a bug in the ahc driver? I think he should not be using the 2.2R driver. I'm ignoring all 2.2R driver bug reports since they are not against the latest version of the driver in the 2.2 branch. I still think there are bugs in there and as soon as this motherboard shows up form my 8 disk "kill Justin's driver" box, I'll go back to flushing them out. As for the tagged queueing thing, I would expect that the HP4020i is not even a tagged queueing device, and that it is the mixed tagged/ non-tagged bug I fixed just after 2.2R that is causing his problem (his drives are probably tag capable). >I think we should finally implement the `no tagged queuing' scsiconf >option to allow this decision on a per-device basis. Justin and/or >Stefan, how difficult would this be? Nothing is too difficult to do. After all, it's only software. I'd rather not add it right now since I'm knee deep in the new CAM system and it will support it cleanly and right. To make this work quickly in 2.2 and previous, you'd need to add the quirk and also a mechanism for each controller to query it so it could turn off the tag stuff. Sine the new mechanism has the generic SCSI layer tell the controller driver when to tag or not, its much cleaner. >-- >cheers, J"org > >joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de -- http://www.sax.de/~joerg/ -- NIC: JW11-RIPE >Never trust an operating system you don't have sources for. ;-) > -- Justin T.
