This is just how the install process works. After installing, simply boot and use the fixit disk, and copy the kenerl.GENERIC from ftp.i-connect.net to /kernel, and boot up. At this point, you should build a new kernel from scratch using the 2.2.5 source, and apply the dpt patch. > Many thanks, > Ken Cochran Tom From owner-freebsd-scsi Wed Oct 22 10:29:22 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id KAA13570 for freebsd-scsi-outgoing; Wed, 22 Oct 1997 10:29:22 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-scsi) Received: from flash-gordon.haven.boston.ma.us (flash-gordon.haven.boston.ma.us [192.251.193.10]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id KAA13565 for ; Wed, 22 Oct 1997 10:29:18 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from benji@haven.boston.ma.us) Received: (benji@localhost) by flash-gordon.haven.boston.ma.us (8.7.5/Haven-2.23M) id NAA26102; Wed, 22 Oct 1997 13:26:01 -0400 (EDT) From: behind brown eyes Message-Id: <199710221726.NAA26102@flash-gordon.haven.boston.ma.us> Subject: Re: [Fwd: SCSI Controller card support] To: julian@whistle.com (Julian Elischer) Date: Wed, 22 Oct 1997 13:26:00 -0400 (EDT) Cc: scsi@freebsd.org, wolftoy@ix.netcom.com In-Reply-To: <344C1D08.31DFF4F5@whistle.com> from "Julian Elischer" at Oct 20, 97 08:10:00 pm Organization: Where the Wild Things Are X-Personal-Deity: Dionysus X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL24 ME8] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk > I have a DPT PM2022 SCSI controller that does not seem to be supported > by freebsd. I have the Seagate/Conner/Archive DDS-1 DAT drive (Seagate model 4320RT, identifies as "ARCHIVE Python 25501-XXX 5.45") that wedges after writing anywhere from a couple to several hundred MB. I poked around on the Seagate web site and found a page that suggested that their tape drives be run only in asynchronous mode and no faster than 5 MB/s. So first I tried using ncrcontrol to set the drive to be asynchronous ("ncrcontrol -t 6 -s async") but that didn't help. Then, grasping at straws, I tried changing back to synchronous mode but limiting it to 4 MB/s ("ncrcontrol -t 6 -s sync=4"). (When initially probed, the drive claims to do synchronous at 6.7 MB/s.) I then managed to write a whole 60m tape full of zeros (1.3GB) and to do four 300MB dumps in a row without wedging (I also read back two of the dumps), so this may have done it. Any thoughts on whether there is any logical explanation as to why this fix would work when just setting async mode wouldn't? The drive is the only device on the bus and there are terminators on both the controller and the drive. I haven't tried a different cable yet. Now if I can just figure out how to accomplish the equivalent speed limitation under Windoze NT. andrew From owner-freebsd-scsi Thu Oct 23 06:25:21 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id GAA25072 for freebsd-scsi-outgoing; Thu, 23 Oct 1997 06:25:21 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-scsi) Received: from europe.std.com (europe.std.com [199.172.62.20]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id GAA25063 for ; Thu, 23 Oct 1997 06:25:14 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from kwc@world.std.com) Received: from world.std.com by europe.std.com (8.7.6/BZS-8-1.0) id JAA27702; Thu, 23 Oct 1997 09:25:02 -0400 (EDT) Received: by world.std.com (5.65c/Spike-2.0) id AA04752; Thu, 23 Oct 1997 09:25:01 -0400 Date: Thu, 23 Oct 1997 09:25:01 -0400 From: kwc@world.std.com (Kenneth W Cochran) Message-Id: <199710231325.AA04752@world.std.com> To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Subject: 2.2.5 w/DPT hba Sender: owner-freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk >From tom@sdf.com Wed Oct 22 19:19:17 1997 >Date: Wed, 22 Oct 1997 12:19:17 -0700 (PDT) >From: Tom > >> >On Wed, 22 Oct 1997, Kenneth W Cochran wrote: >> >> (copy of msg in freebsd-questions...) >> >> I've done a FTP install of 2.2.2-RELEASE (2.2.5 soon) >> >> on a machine with a DPT SCSI HBA using the boot.flp >> >> from ftp.i-connect.net/crash. (although I had to use the numeric ip-address, since dns wasn't up... no problem...) But... I *still* get "Read error" when trying to boot off hd. I don't even get a "boot:" prompt so I could run userconfig. I also don't get "missing operating system." Wierd. (Or is it?) Looks like I don't have bootblocks(?) Any special incantation to try, now that I should have a usable kernel (kernel.dpt from ftp.i-connect.net/crash/kernel.dpt)? Could runnig in "dangerously dedicated" mode have anything to do with this? For this machine, I have no need to share w/other OSes. Update... I can boot off the boot floppy by specifying 0:sd(0,a)kernel, thus "forcing" the boot off the hd & things work fine(!) Looks indeed like something is missing from my hd setup... Idea(s)? Further update... Well, they don't work so fine... :-( I'm booting by starting with the floppy & specifying 0:sd(0,a)kernel.DPT at the prompt & that gets the system to boot off the hd but I'm getting error messages from dpt0 of the following form: dpt0 ERROR: Stale 7001 (Write (10) [6.1.18]) on c0b0t0u0 (199739226) gets another chance(2/5) (not quite the message, but it's scrolling & similar) Also I can't exit the shell or shutdown, so I have to hard-reset, fsck and hope for the best... I did a minimal install (just so I could get *something* up) & thus far /stand/sysinstall won't run (so I can get, among other things, kernel sources & dpt-related patches). I'm in the 2.2.5 flavor of things... (except for this new boot, which is 3.0-ish) Am I going to have to hose this project & use Linux instead? While BSDI works just fine w/DPT I don't have the option of installing it in this case... (although I had to use the numeric ip-address, since dns wasn't up... no problem...) Could runnig in "dangerously dedicated" mode have anything to do with this? For this machine, I have no need to share w/other OSes. Update... I'm booting by starting with the floppy & specifying 0:sd(0,a)kernel.DPT at the prompt & that gets the system to boot off the hd but I'm getting error messages from dpt0 of the following form: dpt0 ERROR: Stale 7001 (Write (10) [6.1.18]) on c0b0t0u0 (199739226) gets another chance(2/5) (not quite the message, but it's scrolling & similar) Also I can't exit the shell or shutdown, so I have to hard-reset, fsck and hope for the best... More developments on my "get 2.2.5 running w/DPT..." I've done a(nother) complete reinstall, this time of 2.2.5; took about all day 'cos I got kernel sources, too. ftp.i-connect.net/crash has no kernel.GENERIC. There is, however, a kernel.dpt. I got it. Still get "Read error" if I try to boot from hd, but I can use the floppy to "force" the boot. No boot: prompt, no "missing operating system." (Error msgs once up, though--strange--fixit floppy works fine.) Looks like I need to do a "disklabel." No idea, though (yet), what to spec on it. Sorry, I haven't been following this thread. > The dangerous dedicated doesn't buy you anything, other than making an > partition table incompatible with everything. It refers to the fact that, if you use the whole disk for FreeBSD, you don't need a partition table. Partition tables are an invention of Microsoft, and suffer from a number of limitations, including the geometry kludges that still give people a lot of headaches when installing FreeBSD. So why "dangerous"? Because if you use it, you can't add any other partitions later. Well, if you're using the whole disk for FreeBSD, you can't anyway. One way or another, you need to repartition the disk, and if you want, you can then add a Microsoft partition table. I recommend using "dangerously dedicated" disks whenever possible. So, for that matter, does BSDI. Kludges? Most geometry problems occur with IDE drives with greater than 1024 cyclinders, and trying to use some space for a non-FreeBSd system. > So why "dangerous"? Sorry guys, it still looks to me like It Still Does Not Work. :-( Thank you for all your help, really... -kc From owner-freebsd-scsi Fri Oct 24 16:12:54 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id QAA27438 for freebsd-scsi-outgoing; Fri, 24 Oct 1997 16:12:54 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-scsi) Received: from sendero-ppp.i-connect.net (sendero-ppp.i-Connect.Net [206.190.143.100]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with SMTP id QAA27423 for ; Fri, 24 Oct 1997 16:12:42 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from shimon@sendero-ppp.i-connect.net) Received: (qmail 12419 invoked by uid 1000); 24 Oct 1997 23:12:59 -0000 Message-ID: X-Mailer: XFMail 1.2-beta-100797 [p0] on FreeBSD X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit MIME-Version: 1.0 In-Reply-To: <199710241607.AA19456@world.std.com> Date: Fri, 24 Oct 1997 16:12:59 -0700 (PDT) Organization: Atlas Telecom From: Simon Shapiro To: (Kenneth W Cochran) Subject: RE: DPT still won't boot/run Cc: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Sender: owner-freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Hi Kenneth W Cochran; On 24-Oct-97 you wrote: > >>From tom@sdf.com Fri Oct 24 04:34:37 1997 > >Date: Thu, 23 Oct 1997 21:34:37 -0700 (PDT) > > > >On Thu, 23 Oct 1997, Kenneth W Cochran wrote: > > > >> >Or, a problem with your bootblocks on the hard drive. All the DPT does is get a SCSI command, pass it to the controller and pass results back. > >> >What version of dpt driver? > > I think the boot.flp is 1.1.10... Something times out very badly. The 9digits number is the number of microseconds that passed since the command was issued. Most DPT commands complete in 2-80us. > I can boot by booting the floppy & at the boot: prompt, > 0:sd(0,a)kernel.dpt > HBA is a DPT PM2144UW with a pair of Seagate St34572W 4.x g drives. I never tested on these controllers. All my work is done on 3334UW{D}. The fact that the boot floppy works indicates that the kernel and the driver do work. We install this kernel (current) on machines which have no other disk I/O at the rate of 4-10 per day. I would LOVE to fix bugs, but this appears to be a ``cockpit error''. Are you sure you use the proper kernel with the proper release and do a plain, clear ``Novice'' install? > The recipient of this machine is arriving shortly to pick it up > & I think I'll install Linux.
