I want to write multithreadted programs with the SMP Kernel. Is there > programing environment for multithreadted programing in C or C++? We have libc_r (a substitute for libc) for PTHREADS. But be aware there is no kernel threading (yet) so you won't get increased performance by writting a program as threaded, since it will all run in one process. -- Steve Passe | powered by smp@csn.net | Symmetric MultiProcessor FreeBSD From owner-freebsd-smp Mon Dec 8 13:53:43 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id NAA17262 for smp-outgoing; Mon, 8 Dec 1997 13:53:43 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-smp) Received: from Ilsa.StevesCafe.com (Ilsa.StevesCafe.com [205.168.119.129]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id NAA17248; Mon, 8 Dec 1997 13:53:34 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from fbsd@Ilsa.StevesCafe.com) Received: from Ilsa.StevesCafe.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by Ilsa.StevesCafe.com (8.8.7/8.8.5) with ESMTP id OAA12205; Mon, 8 Dec 1997 14:53:21 -0700 (MST) Message-Id: <199712082153.OAA12205@Ilsa.StevesCafe.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0gamma 1/27/96 From: Steve Passe To: freebsd-gnats-submit@freebsd.org cc: mgove@cais.com, smp@freebsd.org Subject: Re: kern/5244: F00F workaround dosn't always work on SMP system. This is because SMP:init_secondary() uses the global r_idt to sync the additional CPUs to the boot CPU: --- machdep.c: ... #ifdef SMP /* table descriptors - used to load tables by microp */ struct region_descriptor r_gdt, r_idt; #endif ... init386(first) int first; { ... #ifndef SMP /* table descriptors - used to load tables by microp */ struct region_descriptor r_gdt, r_idt; #endif --- mp_machdep.c: init_secondary(void) { ... lidt(&r_idt); lldt(_default_ldt); --- I think to trick is to rework f00f_hack() to use the global in the SMP case, AND to insure that init_secondary() runs AFTER f00f_hack(). I'm not clear on what f00f_hack() does, and do not have the available hardware to test it (ie dual P5), so I'll have to leave this to someone else to deal with... -- Steve Passe | powered by smp@csn.net | Symmetric MultiProcessor FreeBSD From owner-freebsd-smp Mon Dec 8 14:01:30 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id OAA18056 for smp-outgoing; Mon, 8 Dec 1997 14:01:30 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-smp) Received: from Ilsa.StevesCafe.com (Ilsa.StevesCafe.com [205.168.119.129]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id OAA18051 for ; Mon, 8 Dec 1997 14:01:24 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from fbsd@Ilsa.StevesCafe.com) Received: from Ilsa.StevesCafe.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by Ilsa.StevesCafe.com (8.8.7/8.8.5) with ESMTP id PAA12268; Mon, 8 Dec 1997 15:00:35 -0700 (MST) Message-Id: <199712082200.PAA12268@Ilsa.StevesCafe.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0gamma 1/27/96 From: Steve Passe To: Kyle Mestery cc: Ivar Hosteng , Andreas Klemm , smp@freebsd.org Subject: Re: FreeBSD 3.0-current SMP kernel gives a pagefault in kernel mode In-reply-to: Your message of "Thu, 04 Dec 1997 19:23:54 CST." Note that it isn't on AMIs web page yet...they need to get some people to manufacture custom cases for it. Intel is anoying: Orion is the only chipset for a 4-way server. It doesn't even support EDO memory, and Intel won't sell faster Pentium Pro processors. Still, 4 1MB L2 200MHz Pentium Pros would probably scream... I used to have a more complicated formula involving the analysis of the volumes of mail on smp, correlated with the # of postings by John or DG, subtract out the number of postings by DG involving network cards, add all the RCS version numbers together, and then correlate that whole mess with the number of postings by Doug White already answered in the FAQ, and when those two events when graphed with my crayola's and a sheet of graph paper were indistinguishable from the asymptote, and 8 planets lined up, then I installed. But it was taking longer to run the analysis than to do the backup/upgrade, and then finally the batteries in my HP48GX ran out, and I couldn't figure it all out anymore. And I ran out of Burnt Umber, and I hate to graph in Sienna. And it's late. And I need to go install -current, because everything seems in conjunction. I'll probably adopt Jordan's approach. :) On Wed, 10 Dec 1997, Jordan K.
