Second, the place has grown quite a bit, and I think it now belongs in the "non-profit organizations" category. Just Extending the current arrangement, it might be good to have a little table of contents at the top since the page will be getting fairly long. The other option is to have a single text entry with a radio button to select which service to search. Since some services have extra input gadgets, this might not work to well though. In other search news, I have an overhaul of the mailing list/web page search engine about ready to bring over to freefall, pending the installation of perl 5.003 (YO JORDAN!!!!). A number of new fetures will be initially hidden pending further testing with the full dataset. An (untested) feature for searching the web pages that mirror users will like is that the search engine will try and make the links point to the mirror from which the user started the search. Of course, there are other improvements, like showing the page title rather than the url.... -john From owner-freebsd-www Wed Apr 9 07:27:57 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id HAA22340 for www-outgoing; Wed, 9 Apr 1997 07:27:57 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mail.cs.tu-berlin.de (root@mail.cs.tu-berlin.de [130.149.17.13]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id HAA22336 for ; Wed, 9 Apr 1997 07:27:52 -0700 (PDT) Received: from shoshone.cs.tu-berlin.de (wosch@shoshone.cs.tu-berlin.de [130.149.17.93]) by mail.cs.tu-berlin.de (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id QAA16341; Wed, 9 Apr 1997 16:27:46 +0200 (MET DST) From: Wolfram Schneider Received: (from wosch@localhost) by shoshone.cs.tu-berlin.de (8.8.5/8.8.5) id QAA03539; Wed, 9 Apr 1997 16:27:31 +0200 (MET DST) Message-Id: <199704091427.QAA03539@shoshone.cs.tu-berlin.de> Subject: Re: search page To: jfieber@indiana.edu (John Fieber) Date: Wed, 9 Apr 1997 16:27:22 +0200 (MET DST) Cc: www@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: from "John Fieber" at Apr 9, 97 09:17:09 am X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL25] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk John Fieber > Just make up a sample of how you think it should look and give us > a URL for comment. After all, we are not really competitiors. There are really two levels to shoot at here. One, and the easier of the two, is sprucing up the organization of the ports and the web interface. What we have now is fairly minimalist, and is bad solution for people working off mirrors. A better solution, however really depends on the mirror sites running CGI scripts and a large number do not or will not. :( The other is the actual packaging system the ports use, which is the same form the HPUX operating system and its options is distributed in. I'm not very familiar with HPUX so I can't say too much about it, but it looks good. However, what's not so nice is how it's currently implemented. I click on GNATs and go to www.freebsd.org (fine and expected), I click on "Manual Pages" or "Ports Changes" and go to Germany (uhhh... say what?!), I click on "The Source Code" and I go to Australia (though more often than not, like right now for example) it's just too crazed and unpredictable an experience to be that useful (connectivity from California to Germany or OZ is unusably slow or even non-existant during most parts of the business day now). We've been talking about bringing Warren Toomey's indexed source page for awhile now, though at this point we could just as well substitute in GLOBAL indexed pages (and I will probably bring in the tags support for that soon) and I see no reason why the German stuff could be brought a little closer to home. Any comments? Indiana seems to have a pretty decent German link, often better than to California! I think the problem is at YOUR end Jordan. :) In the short term, we should probably put country names in parenthesis after the services to give people a subtle warning to the user. In the long term, we have to consider our mirrors before we do anything that would make the web tree grow dramatically. Mirrors are fansatic, don't get me wrong, but the really put a crimp on freedom of design. For example, lots of small CGIs could make the web site nicer if we could get all the mirrors to run CGI scripts. On the home page, for example, the mirror selection CGI is hardwired to freefall. That should definately not be the case. A long time ago I hacked up a little CGI to allow selecting an FTP mirror for ftp://... links. I'm sure you can imagine other little CGI based enhancements. A "mirror inspector" is one of the web support positions that I haven't seen much of any action on. :( -john From owner-freebsd-www Sat Apr 12 08:04:39 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id IAA06058 for www-outgoing; Sat, 12 Apr 1997 08:04:39 -0700 (PDT) Received: from time.cdrom.com (root@time.cdrom.com [204.216.27.226]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id IAA06046 for ; Sat, 12 Apr 1997 08:04:35 -0700 (PDT) Received: from time.cdrom.com (jkh@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by time.cdrom.com (8.8.5/8.6.9) with ESMTP id IAA15508; Sat, 12 Apr 1997 08:04:32 -0700 (PDT) To: John Fieber cc: www@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Comments on new search page.. However, I can't *do anything* about this and so my only choice is to avoid going across the pond for stuff whenever I can help it! > In the long term, we have to consider our mirrors before we do > anything that would make the web tree grow dramatically. Maybe we should have less mirrors with a greater degree of committment. :-) Seriously, I think we already have a LOT of mirrors in various states of [dis]repair, and what we really need are fewer mirrors with more dedication to running whatever darn CGI scripts or storing whatever mailing list index data is required. Trust me, even if we lost 70% of our existing mirrors as a result of imposing such stringent guidelines, I could get replacements for every one of them in less than 60 days (assuming that we wanted that many replacements). There are at least 2 or 3 new "volunteers" sending messages to me or admin@freebsd.org every day. > Mirrors are fansatic, don't get me wrong, but the really put a > crimp on freedom of design. For example, lots of small CGIs Exactly. In a more well designed environment, the regional user could click on just about any of the options and NOT get sent back to the U.S. (it works both ways, after all) nor would others make similarly goofy transits to get data which should be LOCAL (otherwise, what's the real point of doing all this DNS frobulation and maintanance to create the regional subdomains we have now?). Even the stats are wiggy because of this. I'd like to click on "About this server" and get to see (for example) the *german* stats for the German mirror, not www.freebsd.org's stats. > A "mirror inspector" is one of the web support positions that I > haven't seen much of any action on. :( I think this one's Ulf. Right now there are an incredible number of mirrors, but one of the problems is that you never know how "full featured" a particular mirror is. I think it would be a good thing to see any mirror of freebsd.org be a complete duplicate of the original - CGI and all.. I'm sure it would be less confusing/frustrating to newcomers. -Mark > > Jordan > ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mark Mayo mark@quickweb.com RingZero Comp. http://vinyl.quickweb.com/mark finger mark@quickweb.com for my PGP key and GCS code ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- University degrees are a bit like adultery: you may not want to get involved with that sort of thing, but you don't want to be thought incapable. -Sir Peter Imbert
