The process is pretty simple - you just send a single paragraph of HTML to this list which describes your product in brief and includes any embedded URLs pointing to further information. It will then be added to the appropriate section of the vendor pages. We have to avoid playing favorites on this one, I think (and heck, I'm a WC employee!) and simply view this as a potential opportunity for cash-strapped users to get ahold of CDs. If we do add this entry, we do probably want to amend WC's entry to note that they are financial supporters of the project (e.g.: "Walnut Creek CDROM also donates a percentage of CDROM sales to the FreeBSD Project and is the project's strongest commercial supporter") so that users can make their purchasing choice based on all the relevant factors. We could also note that WC's product is a 4CD set whereas the Cheapbytes one contains only a single abbreviated CD's worth of contents (e.g. there's no way in heck they're managing to provide full distfile and package sets on that one, much less the CVS repository). In other words, one may cost $39.95 and the other $5.99, but one's also got 4X as much stuff on it and includes the "starting freebsd" book. As long as that's all made clear then the customer knows the trade-offs they're making with each product. Although I personally try to use the correct name, and am more than willing to correct inappropriate references, on the whole I think it is a lost battle. Also, out of curiosity, other than the fact that it isn't on the list of "appropriate names", what are the arguments against the name "X Windows"? Among X propeller heads, "X" or "X11" is well understood, but when more clarification is needed, the full name just doesn't roll off the tounge very well. -john From owner-freebsd-www Thu Sep 4 10:06:07 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id KAA11628 for www-outgoing; Thu, 4 Sep 1997 10:06:07 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mph124.rh.psu.edu (hunt@MPH124.rh.psu.edu [128.118.126.83]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id KAA11623 for ; Thu, 4 Sep 1997 10:06:02 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from hunt@localhost) by mph124.rh.psu.edu (8.8.7/8.8.7) id NAA19091; Thu, 4 Sep 1997 13:05:53 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <19970904130552.62798@mph124.rh.psu.edu> Date: Thu, 4 Sep 1997 13:05:52 -0400 From: Matthew Hunt To: John Fieber Cc: yossman , www@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: 'x-windows' Reply-To: Matthew Hunt References: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.81 In-Reply-To: ; from John Fieber on Thu, Sep 04, 1997 at 11:31:05AM -0500 Sender: owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk On Thu, Sep 04, 1997 at 11:31:05AM -0500, John Fieber wrote: > Also, out of curiosity, other than the fact that it isn't on the > list of "appropriate names", what are the arguments against the > name "X Windows"? I certainly don't have any special insight, but my assumption has always been simply that X11 is a windowing system, and not windows themselves. That is, X11 is the software for producing and manipulating on-screen windows. Likewise, newfs could be called a "filesystem creator" but not a filesystem, and xfig is illustration software, but not an illustration. -- Matthew Hunt * Think locally, act globally. finger hunt@mph124.rh.psu.edu for PGP public key. They're in the `src' directory underneath the SNAP directory. They come in `clumps', I guess. When I say `clumps' I mean there is a set for the kernel sources (ssys.*), core binaries (sbin.*), and so forth. Actually, you need to download the boot floppy from 2.2.2, boot it, and select the `upgrade' option.
