My error - I misunderstood something. >Sorry I didn't comment on PR when it came in (why was it labeled >"misc"?) Well at the time (I wasn't a committer - didn't know you etc) I searched the online PRs and found mk reports spread evenly across ports, misc and bin so I took a punt as I recall :) Now I know you, I know you follow ports and so I'd choose that. >but I don't think this is a good idea. You have changed a >single variable (MASTER_SITE_BACKUP) that needs to be changed to a >whole bunch of others. /etc/make.conf is already long enough as it >is. I'm not sure I agree - Tweeking with that is complicated. Yes it can be done, but it's set up as *if* this is the site to look at when ftp.freebsd is unavailable. Asking a newbie to track down the names of mirrors for themselves is a lot to ask. I have been using these patches myself to speed up access from Australia and it's great. For one thing, as I'm outside Australia I *want* to go to my local mirror *BEFORE* the port's master site. I have an FTP server with many of the distfiles and I want machines on my lan to go there before *anywhere* else This makes an immense difference. >Also, "locale" means something totally different in the computer >world, it's not a country. Perhaps "locale" isn't the best name in the world but I didn't want to choose "country" as it's more a regional thing - what are the sites *near* me? So I was thinking along the same lines as other "local configurations" a la the locale settings. New zealanders and Papua New Guineans, for example, would use the same setting as I do. However mk is your baby and I screwed up in patching not realising you were supposed to know. If you want this reversed while we toss it about and decide if its wanted, that would be entirely reasonable and I will. I still think it's good functionality and good user-friendliness...
