Most UNIX-like systems for the alpha (NetBSD) require SRM. SRM is available from ftp.digital.com (somewhere in there). Read the licenses related to using SRM to make sure that it is legal for you to use, etc. SRM is specific to each alpha system, so make sure that if you go to install SRM you install the right one. As for getting help with this kind of think, you may want to search axp-list@redhat.com (via dejanews, redhat's search is broken) or check out the great NetBSD docs. I found the these files at that site: > fwupdate.exe > lx164_v5_1.exe > lx164_v5_1.sys Looking at DEC's site (I have never seen an AlphaPC 164), it looks like that machine has firmware that contains both the SRM console and the AlphaBIOS, so there is only one image to update. The update method determines which file you use. If you are running AlphaBIOS, my guess is that it is simply a matter of setting the jumper to enable the firmware update, selecting the "AlphaBIOS update" menu option and feeding it a FAT disk with fwupdate.exe in the root directory. There should (???) be a menu option in the AlphaBIOS that will change the default to the SRM and on rebooting the machine will come up with the SRM prompt (>>>). -- John Birrell - jb@cimlogic.com.au; jb@freebsd.org http://www.cimlogic.com.au/ CIMlogic Pty Ltd, GPO Box 117A, Melbourne Vic 3001, Australia +61 418 353 137 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Thu Jul 16 18:03:13 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id SAA28368 for freebsd-alpha-outgoing; Thu, 16 Jul 1998 18:03:13 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from bb.cc.wa.us (chris@bb.cc.wa.us [134.39.181.3]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id SAA28349 for ; Thu, 16 Jul 1998 18:03:08 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from chris@bb.cc.wa.us) Received: from localhost (chris@localhost) by bb.cc.wa.us (8.8.8/8.6.9) with SMTP id AAA07331; Fri, 17 Jul 1998 00:55:44 GMT Date: Thu, 16 Jul 1998 17:55:43 -0700 (PDT) From: Chris Coleman To: John Birrell cc: cc@tarsier.ca.sandia.gov, freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Basic Question.
