NetBSD boot floppies and setting up FreeBSD. - I feel there should be a note in the .org/alpha section that explains this method is no longer used. I have seen posts to the list where folks (including me) had set up their systems this way & had problems with later FreeBSD installs. Regarding several posts I saw this morning: Mark Turpin wrote: > I have a webpage that documents my process of installing the system. it's > at http://www.mainstreettech.com/~mturpin/alpha.html Nice Job Mark; however, for the record, where you say: "To boot from the hard drive type: >>> boot -flags 'a' dka0" Even though it will work this way, SRM wants to see it like this: boot dka0 -flags a and if you boot something other than "kernel" then boot dka0 -file (name) -flags a the same is true for booting dva0. Gary Palmer wrote: [snip] (about the location of the SNAP mirror) and there was a typo: the correct location is: ftp://mirrors.rcn.com/pub/FreeBSD/alpha (btw) I, for one, appreciate this mirror. Regarding previous posts about "vi": Having spent a little time, now, 'playing' with a working FreeBSD/axp, on my Multia, I no longer have any problems with "vi". The "lines that were being cut off" only appear when I use "vi" under the P2 minicom serial terminal and NOT under a telnet session. In fact, using telnet has eliminated a LOT of 'stuff' I originally thought were errors. I would like to repeat my THANK YOU to those who helped me and extend kudos for the APPRECIATED fine work you have done on this port. I would also like to apologize to those who feel uncomfortable with me participating on this list; especially (smile) the person who took the time to re-mail me from Europe suggesting my posts were 'spam'. Geez, I thought I was trying to help (chuckle), but I may have been wrong. (smile) 'Anyhow', I have what I need to continue with FreeBSD/axp, but am curious about a few things. 1). Will there be linux/alpha emulation? 2). Does anyone have EMACS running yet - caveats ? 3). Is there information that explains what files are needed for a minimum FreeBSD/axp install? Finally a trivia question - OFF TOPIC: I noticed there is a quote from "Brett Glass, Infoworld, April 8, 1996", on the FreeBSD site. Can anyone tell me if this is the same Brett Glass who developed 'polar' QAM at Stanford for the experiments I completed 11 years ago? In conclusion, it was never my intention to 'create problems' and I will be leaving the list Monday evening.... so if you have answers to the above, please 'CC' them to me .....without you, I would not have gotten so far, so quickly. In order to verify what Dima was saying, I first tried to delete the good kernel (so I could make sure it was booting kernel.old), but the 'permission' on kernel would not allow me to do this. I built a new kernel and tried to boot the old one using the method I described below and it failed. HOWEVER, I was able to use the boot floppy to get back into the system: >>>boot dva0 [no flags] # mount /dev/da0a / # swapon /dev/da0b # cd /usr/src/sys/alpha/conf # ifconfig de0 192.168.1.19 # ftp to the P2 'put' my kernel configuration, vi it, 'get' it, compile a new kernel, and boot it. I have not tried the one from 11-25. The one that has been working for me is mfsroot.gz from 11-24, but I could not locate a copy, at the moment. I just went to ftp://mirrors.rcn.com/pub/FreeBSD/alpha/3.0-19981127-SNAP and downloaded mfsroot.gz from the floppies directory and it seems to work (i haven't done the install yet, but the keyboard is no longer frozen and I can now make selections from the /stand/sysinstall Main Menu). For the folks in Germany/Europe, Oliver Fromme mentioned the mirror located at: ftp://ftp7.de.freebsd.org I'm 'CC'ing this note to the list in case others would like to try. If you're planning on continuing to run FreeBSD/axp, I'd strongly recommend staying on the list in order to reduce the "problems" that we're able to create for you - there are likely to be a few more upheavals coming, and being forewarned about these would likely save you a lot of stress. It was a struggle, but I have FreeBSD/Alpha on an AlphaStation 200 4/166. To install the machine, I used the kern.flp image from the 3.0-19981206-SNAP and the mfsroot.gz from the 3.0-19981127-SNAP (from the mirror site) which I copied over the mfsroot.gz (after renaming fs-image.gz) from the Dec SNAP. The mfsroot.gz from the later SNAP freezes up in sysinstall on the serial terminal (kermit + null modem from an x86 box). I had a devil of a time getting the scsi to talk to any drive (admittedly, I believe the first, a Seagate Hawk, may be shot, but the old RZ25M failed over too). It wasn't until I used a Seagate Barracuda that I was able to successfully get the disks probed. Could the tagged queueing that seems to be enabled be causing problems with the older drives? It seemed to enable it even on some very old disks. Not sure if this is a proverbial red herring or not. Secondly, it wasn't obvious to me that the installation was not going to install boot blocks on the drive. So, thanks to Curtis (ufkartfm@pacific.net) who pointed me toward the booting off of the floppy and then using disklabel. I think the following steps are what I would liked to have seen somewhere (did I miss something, somewhere?). 1) boot machine from kernel image floppy 2) when it prompts for mfsroot, hit enter and let it find your hard drive 3) mount -u /dev/da0a / {to get root mounted writeable since the fstab is borked up} 4) change all of da0s1[a-h] entries in fstab to da0[a-h] 5) mount the rest of the partitions 6) disklabel -B -b /usr/mdec/boot1 /dev/da0c 7) while you have machine up change, /dev/ttyd0 entry in /etc/ttys, so you can actually log in on the serial console :) ttyd0 "/usr/libexec/getty std.9600" dialup off secure to ttyd0 "/usr/libexec/getty std.9600" vt100 on secure This box has a Mach64 in it, so the next trick will be getting syscons/X working. Maybe it'll replace the DU box on my desk :) Thanks, S -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sean O'Connell Email: sean@stat.Duke.EDU Institute of Statistics and Decision Sciences Phone: (919) 684-5419 Duke University Fax: (919) 684-8594 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Wed Dec 9 06:28:47 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id GAA20046 for freebsd-alpha-outgoing; Wed, 9 Dec 1998 06:28:47 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from pacific.net (pacific.pacific.net [199.4.80.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id GAA20040 for ; Wed, 9 Dec 1998 06:28:40 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from ufkartfm@pacific.net) Received: from pacific.net (slime-lake.pacific.net [209.209.2.250]) by pacific.net (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id GAA21617; Wed, 9 Dec 1998 06:28:26 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: <366E18A7.2C793061@pacific.net> Date: Wed, 09 Dec 1998 06:28:55 +0000 From: curtis Organization: Flying Snail Ranch X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.07 [en] (X11; I; FreeBSD 3.0-RELEASE i386) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Wilko Bulte CC: "freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG" Subject: Re: installing boot? Long shot: might this be because the CAMified FreeBSD/axp uses /dev/da disk names, whereas sysinstall still expects /dev/sd ?? Mind you, I have not checked the sysinstall code yet. Maybe sysinstall is not even supposed to do anything useful on axp yet. About the NetBSD remark: I first installed Freebsd/axp when there was not yet a working Freebsd boot floppy out there. So, the harddisk still has the NetBSD boot bits on it. This should not prevent sysinstall from finding the disks I'd say. The kernel did find 'm after all. I have seen posts to the list where folks (including me) had set > up their systems this way & had problems with later FreeBSD installs. I experienced similar problems (as yours) when I moved everything to 3.0. Previous to this I was under 2.2.6, moved to 2.2.7, and had used the NetBSD install method. Under 3.0, and when I got a working kern.flp & mfsroot.gz that took me to a working /stand/sysintall Main Menu, I ran into similar problems. Here is what Mike Smith told me: > You are trying to run a mismatched sh/kernel pair; one is a FreeBSD > binary, one is a NetBSD binary. Boot from the NetBSD install floppy > again and make sure that you have both from the same source. Which was a big clue. The ONLY way (for me) to get around this was to re-format my drive. I figured this out after I did a second NetBSD install and it put me back to the same place. A re-format (for me) was the only way it would accept a 'clean' FreeBSD install and disk problems have gone away. (smile) I did notice a 2.5% fragmentation increase. As you might know the somewhat older DEC drives are set to wait for a spinup command. Newer ones are set for staggered spinup, this means they wait X seconds * the SCSI ID before starting their spindle. This to avoid high inrush currents, especially on raid arrays and in Storageworks shelves. Anyway, when booting the 3.0-current from the harddisk both da0 and da1 were spun up OK, and probed OK by the just booting kernel. When I used the bootflop / mfsroot flop for some reason this did not work, as far as sysinstall was concerned. sysinstall simply claimed "no disks found" or something similar. I just retried the whole floppy boot with the drives already spinning and now sysinstall finds the disks alright, both da0 and da1. I wonder if anybody ever saw this before. I think it is safe to assume you might DEC drives in Alpha machines, but maybe some SRMs do a startup of the disks on their own? I only remember that it took a boot from SRM to start disks, but I obviously have not seen all SRM and machine types. I'll try an install to see what happens..
