Later on I figured out that this printer was a multifunction machine(supporting fax, scanning, and printing) so I could NOT send print jobs to printer using lpr to parallel port directly. There is a MFPI(Multi Function Peripheral Interface) driver between the Host and the MFP. Also the MFPI driver communicate to MFP using Bi-Centro I/F. But the current MFPI driver only support Window 95. There was NO Unix MFPI driver so far. I plan to implement MFPI driver on FreeBSD. And I need the following helps: 1, How did MFPI driver read/write the parallel port before lpr can start the burst data transfer? 2, where can I find more information about parallel port driver? Also I would like to ask if anybody had any experiences before to attach such printers to FreeBSD? I bought about 40 of them (used) for $8/ea. (10baseT only -- can't remember exactly where I bought them from). I've had no problems, and they seem to work perfectly so far. Then there's the good 'ol NE2000s... those two are the only low-priced ISA card I can think of, that is widely supported/etc. If you can't find any place that sells them for $10/ea or so, let me know, and I will attempt to find where I purchased from (dig through my box full of receipts). Hope this helps. Now that's all nice and jolly and 3.0 release works fine as much as i can see so far but here is the question: All the PCI devices seem to be mapped to the same IRQ 14. The bios setup of Dell's is limited to say the least so there are no options to control PCI mapping in there. How can i map those devices to different IRQ's and should i bother at all? I heard there are perfomance implications when sharing same IRQ and this machine's perfomance is critical. This includes the D-Link DFE530-TX fast ethernet card (which is what I used for testing -- special thanks to Larry Baird from GTA for donating it, plus a whole mess of other cards). Note that the controller chip on the D-Link card doesn't actually have the VIA part number on it. Instead's it's labeled something like DL10030. In reality, this is a VT3043 chip. The VIA Rhine chip looks very mich like a DEC tulip: the descriptor format is almost identical. The register layout is different though, and the receiver has the usual 1 entry perfect filter and 64-bit multicast hash filter. One other downside is that the transmit DMA engine wants all packet buffers to be aligned on longword boundaries, which requires buffer copies on transmit. Oddly enough, the chip works pretty fast in spite of this. The driver is available from the following location: http://www.freebsd.org/~wpaul/VIA/3.0 source for FreeBSD 3.0 http://www.freebsd.org/~wpaul/VIA/2.2 source for FreeBSD 2.2.x To add the driver to an existing system, do the following: - Download the correct version of if_vr.c and if_vrreg.h for your version of FreeBSD. - Copy if_vr.c and if_vrreg.h to /sys/pci. - Edit /sys/conf/files and add a line that says: pci/if_vr.c optional vr device driver - Edit your kernel config file (e.g. /sys/i386/conf/GENERIC) and add a line that says: device vr0 - Config and compile a new kernel and boot it. Like all the other drivers, this one supports all modes, BPF, ifmedia and hardware multicast filtering using the hash table. Right now, my main is an old SoundBlaster multi-CD (CT2230). This card is mildly nice because it has a seperate line and amplified out, but I've yet to actually connect it to one of the "big" stereos and see about noise, etc. Noise is always especially annoying anywhere that headphones might be used, too. For general purpose, I also have 5 AD1815 cards, and 2 CT-4170s (or some such number - I don't have one close). None of these others have working bass/treble controls, either, which is mildly annoying as a bedroom or something is the one is where you'd actually USE those controls. Anyway... I remember an old PC Magazine article some years ago about the new 16-bit sound cards of the day, and that the Turtle Beach somethingorother had by far the best sound quality. In fact, the response graph was flat... Every other card was significantly off. Some dropped off well over 3db, well above "regular" cutoff (20Hz, 22.1 Khz, etc.) A few things have changed since then, no doubt, however, I have a funny feeling that today's cheapo brand-X card probably doesn't have the hottest sound quality, whereas I've no doubt that several of the better models are very, very good. So... Does anyone have some more recent test results that could point me to, or some specs on some possible "good" cards? Later...... And the card is said to be 100% soundblaster compatible. The real good thing is that it has a S/P-DIF output. If you want, I can find the exact model ID. I think to have any fair chance to make good sound out of a PC-box you must use digitial (AES/AUB , S/P-DIF) output from the soundcard to an external D/A. (some info at http://wave.campus.luth.se/~pb/comp/audio/digital_if.html) When you use an external D/A u can also start to using professional equipment. Feels somehow tempting to just use an ECP/EPP parallell port to feed an external D/A :-) /Peter Doug Russell wrote: > >Does anyone know of a sound card (supported by FreeBSD, of course) that is >"better than normal"? i.e. Better frequency response through the audio >band, better signal:noise ratio, less static in the background, certainly >a seperate non-amplified line out, etc. > >I'd like to use the best cards possible for the main stereo in the living >room, etc. in my audio server for my whole-house audio system. The BT-956 is a Multimaster adapter, and should work. The Flashpoint controllers may be supported at some point, but that support will only be on the 3.0 branch, and not in the 2.2.x branch. The GCC signal 11 is your problem, it hints that you have hardware problems, most likely RAM or cache. Read the FAQ entry on signal 11; it will direct you to a separate FAQ devoted solely to fixing this problem.
