However, I saw in the release 1.1.6V98-9-23 that JRE WAS included BUT I really do not know how to use it even if it was there. So the question is how do I create a bundled app with just the minimum # of libs to run an application? Do I have to manually pick the libs and create a shell script to run the java interpreter? -Greg To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Sun Nov 29 19:27:14 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id TAA09609 for freebsd-java-outgoing; Sun, 29 Nov 1998 19:27:14 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from ns.mt.sri.com (sri-gw.MT.net [206.127.105.141]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id TAA09602 for ; Sun, 29 Nov 1998 19:27:12 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from nate@mt.sri.com) Received: from mt.sri.com (rocky.mt.sri.com [206.127.76.100]) by ns.mt.sri.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id UAA13871; Sun, 29 Nov 1998 20:26:56 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from nate@rocky.mt.sri.com) Received: by mt.sri.com (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id UAA22613; Sun, 29 Nov 1998 20:26:55 -0700 Date: Sun, 29 Nov 1998 20:26:55 -0700 Message-Id: <199811300326.UAA22613@mt.sri.com> From: Nate Williams MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit To: Greg Lynn Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: JRE in JDK1.1.7... There is a README (or should be :) that is distributed by SUN that explains how to use the JRE. Sun's Java WWW page also has some documents on how to distribute the JRE along with your application, as well as the many 'Installers' that are out now. Export Regulations. Software, including technical data, is subject to U.S. export control laws, including the U.S. Export Administration Act and its associated regulations, and may be subject to export or import regulations in other countries. Use, duplication or disclosure by the United States governemtn is subject to the restrictions as set forth in the Rights in Technical Data and Computer Software Clauses in DFARS 252.227-7013(c) (ii) and FAR 52.227-19(c) as applicable. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If there is any other information about licensing and restrictions for JRE on the FreeBSD web site please point me in the right direction. I recently downloaded Object Domain 2.0 (from http://www.objectdomain.com/) for evaluation, and managed to get it going without too much trouble -- I just had to modify the shell wrapper a little, and set the various environment variables correctly. I also download the `swingall.jar' file they said was required. It starts, and generally seems to run (it's very slow on my 200MHz PPro), but: it continually uses CPU, even when idle. That is, if I start it running and then run ps from an xterm, CPU time increases continuously. One of the options you can set with it displays a piechart that shows memory usage (total, and until next garbage collectoin). This indicates that memory usage is also constantly increasing. The one operating system it performed well on was Windoze (only when run from the JRE, not from the JDK). On all kinds of UNIX it seems to be very slow. On the heaviest iron I could lay my hands on, a digital Alpha Server (433? 500?) with the optimized digital JDK (fastest I've Java ever seen) it was barely usable when X'ed across to my Sparc 5/85. And I was only user at the time of test. On anything Sun-ny performance was even worse although I was running the Solaris JDK, not the reference implementation. But then my Sun was slow... So I think that what you're seeing is pretty normal... Timo On Thu, Dec 03, 1998 at 01:32:00PM -0500, Richard J.
