Note: just to clarify: this patch brings dmabuf.c in sync with that is in snd980607, which seems to work fine for me on 2.2.6 with opti931, CS4237, and Vibra16X on all the machines i have tried. i suspect there might be some issue in the interatcion of the sound driver with -current (see my previous message), rather than in the driver itself. cheers luigi -----------------------------+-------------------------------------- Luigi Rizzo | Dip. di Ingegneria dell'Informazione email: luigi@iet.unipi.it | Universita' di Pisa tel: +39-50-568533 | via Diotisalvi 2, 56126 PISA (Italy) fax: +39-50-568522 | http://www.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/ _____________________________|______________________________________ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Mon Aug 24 06:31:35 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id GAA25960 for freebsd-multimedia-outgoing; Mon, 24 Aug 1998 06:31:35 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from gilgamesch.bik-gmbh.de (gilgamesch.bik-gmbh.de [194.233.237.91]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id GAA25948 for ; Mon, 24 Aug 1998 06:31:25 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from cracauer@gilgamesch.bik-gmbh.de) Received: (from cracauer@localhost) by gilgamesch.bik-gmbh.de (8.8.8/8.7.3) id PAA29663; Mon, 24 Aug 1998 15:33:14 +0200 (MET DST) Message-ID: <19980824153314.A29290@cons.org> Date: Mon, 24 Aug 1998 15:33:14 +0200 From: Martin Cracauer To: "Christopher R. I have even heard > that the current Linux glide layer can be run on FreeBSD under emulation, > though I would make sure before I went out and bought a card. 3dfx doesn't put out documentation about accessing their chipset directly. They provide an API named "glide" and binary implementations of this API. Currently, the Linux implementation of this API is a shared library. Thus, you will have userlevel programs that needs access to the hardware which in turn means you will have to run them as root or setuid root. This is what Mesa currently uses. You can use it on FreeBSD, but all programs and all libararies used by these programs have to be Linux binaries as well. Usually, you can build these easily on FreeBSD by using the emulators/linux-devel port. The interesting thing is a "real" kernel driver. As I understand you may sign an agreement with 3dfx so that they give you enough documentation/example source(?) to build and distribute such a driver in binary form. Kevin Day and Kurt Olsen said they did so, but I didn't see an announcement of a driver yet. As far as I know, the Linux folks didn't go any further as well. The thing zoid is working on isn't a Glide->Hardware interface, but a OpenGL->Glide thing, a lighter replacement for Mesa. The current /dev/3dfx entry isn't an interface to the 3d rendering hardware, but just a permission granting hook like FreeBSD's /dev/io. You still need to link your binary against a library translating some API to 3dfx hardware operations, where the old (2.41) binary shared library is still the only otion on Linux. On the opti931 and snap19980804, the snd0607 driver blows up in the most horrendeous way. I have written or experimented on it, because I can't quite put it in good "technical" prose.. Something along the lines, SND_F_READING/SND_F_WRITING also is broken (similar to the driver that is shipped with the snap), but also the audio being transmitted is ONLY noise and much higher rate than it is supposed to be.. Since the driver shipped with the snap only had this control-c/flags clearing/mask problem, but otherwise worked it seemed the best way for a "quick", but getting snd0607 to work under the snap would be a lot better. BTW you did not say which OS release are you using, and why did not use PnP . It would also help to know what chipset is used on your card. Some laptops use the Yamaha chipset which seems to work fine on my libretto. > Is this just a low-budget card issue, or is it a misconfiguration > on my part? 1) misconfiguration 2) the single-dma-channel code paths in the driver are not well tested and there is not much motivation for this since all the WSS cards i know of support dual dma channel configurations. cheers luigi To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Mon Aug 24 18:56:21 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id SAA13139 for freebsd-multimedia-outgoing; Mon, 24 Aug 1998 18:56:21 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from MailAndNews.com (ta40.cnet-ta.ne.jp [210.225.203.45]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id SAA13127 for ; Mon, 24 Aug 1998 18:56:15 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from tetsuji@MailAndNews.com) Received: (from tetsuji@localhost) by MailAndNews.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) id KAA00374; Tue, 25 Aug 1998 10:55:28 +0900 (JST) (envelope-from tetsuji) Date: Tue, 25 Aug 1998 10:55:28 +0900 (JST) Message-Id: <199808250155.KAA00374@MailAndNews.com> From: Tetsuji Rai To: multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: rvplayer problem on 2.2.7R Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi, I'm trying to run rvplayer on my FreeBSD 2.2.7R. FreeBSD is a Unix operating system for PCs. (similar to Linux) BT848.hlp is a help file for Microsoft Windows so we are unable to help with your problem. Try looking for Windows orientated mailed lists or news groups. Good luck solving your problem. Tonite I 100% fixed a opti931 card under snap980804.. I applied my patch (posted here a few days ago).. After that, we still had a strange audio looping problem.. Repeated received audio every 10 seconds.. Then applied Luigi's suggested "patch" of removing the two DMA lines added between isa.c version 1.112 and 1.113. That fixed it right up.. I'd like to make a STRONG case that the diff between 1.112 and 1.113 be backed out and that the original author find a better fix for the floppy DMA (at least one that doesn't break sound). Comments? Personaly I do not like to have a growing pile of "diffs" that need to be applied to the snap sound drivers for sound to work.. The commit power at be, please comment/help! Thanks. It runs great and all, I did all the symlinking of the audio devices and all that (I've run the driver before), but now, whenever I use the "splay" program to play anything (at least an mp3 or a wav file), it generates a FIOASYNC kernel message. Also, I just set up the Netscape AOL Instand Messager Java program for XFree86, and whenever it plays a sound (I believe they're .au files), it generates 36 FIOASYNC messages (yes, I counted them) and then a "timeout flushing dbuf_out.chan, cnt 0xdc flags 0x00000641" message. None of these problems cause any noticealbe harm, but I get a bit alarmed with this many kernel error messages of which I know nothing about. I've already searched the mail archives and couldn't find anything that told me what to do about it. I can cat an .au file to /dev/audio with no problems, and other programs that use sound work fine (amp, Sajber Jukebox, etc.) I have a SB32 PnP (and yes, I do have the pnp0 controller in my kernel). If anyone would like a /dev/sndstat or a kernel config file, I'd be happy to supply it, but this message is already too long, and I don't want to clog up the mailing list an further. I don't have the necessary background to judge what is going on with DMA (although I very badly need/want to learn), or give you an authoritative answer on whether "broken" or not. I do however, get slightly bent out of shape when I start to see source code trees start to diverge, like they now are with sound source as shipped with the snap, vs. sound source that actualy works... With this setup, the easiest way seems to patch the kernel sources so that it always assumes that userconfig must be entered. Another one could be to build a kernel with userconfig_boot option and use /kernel.config (but i am not sure if at that point of the boot process in a diskless machien things can work..., i suspect not) Third one (but it requires altering the EPROM code) is to add yet another option to bootp to indicate that userconfig should be entered cheers luigi To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message
