Use the grafoil pad and make sure you don't touch it with your fingers since it will damage the pad. Don't use any additional grease either. I tightened the nuts by hand rather than using a torque wrench but (as Peter mentioned), be careful since they are fragile. -- Doug Rabson Mail: dfr@nlsystems.com Nonlinear Systems Ltd. The packages are usually obtained from xfree86.org but I don't think they have one for FreeBSD/Alpha yet. I have one that I use for package building (a tarball of /usr/X11R6) but it is nearly 30Mb in size. I committed the patches recently to the XFree86 port, so you should be able to grab it and build it yourself if you like. -steve To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Sun Aug 1 12: 3: 9 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from duke.cs.duke.edu (duke.cs.duke.edu [152.3.140.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9F51414E54 for ; Sun, 1 Aug 1999 12:02:38 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from gallatin@cs.duke.edu) Received: from grasshopper.cs.duke.edu (grasshopper.cs.duke.edu [152.3.145.30]) by duke.cs.duke.edu (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id PAA06958; Sun, 1 Aug 1999 15:02:30 -0400 (EDT) Received: (from gallatin@localhost) by grasshopper.cs.duke.edu (8.9.3/8.9.1) id PAA23356; Sun, 1 Aug 1999 15:02:30 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from gallatin@cs.duke.edu) From: Andrew Gallatin MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Date: Sun, 1 Aug 1999 15:02:29 -0400 (EDT) To: Steve Price Cc: freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Xfree In-Reply-To: References: X-Mailer: VM 6.43 under 20.4 "Emerald" XEmacs Lucid Message-ID: <14244.39059.761109.626846@grasshopper.cs.duke.edu> Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Steve Price writes: > I committed the patches recently to the XFree86 port, so you > should be able to grab it and build it yourself if you like. > > -steve Steve, Thanks for committing the patches. I've built 3.3.4 from ports & it seems to work, with the exception of one problem -- xdm dies with the following error: xdm error (pid 11153): /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/libXdmGreet.so: Undefined symbol "SessionPingFailed" while loading /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/libXdmGreet.so This is happening because the XdmGreet library is trying to use symbols defined in the xdm binary which were not exported. If I manually re-link xdm with the added cflag '-export-dynamic' it works fine. I'm not enough of a ports (or XFree86) hacker to know exactly how to fix this the right way... Can you help? FWIW I have a fix for XFree86 4.0 which avoids this problem without making anything static. Really stripped down versions, without harddisk, floppydisk and memory is basicly... expensive if you have to buy the other parts to assemble a full one :-) For example, does anybody know a source for the half-height floppydisks and their cable? I seem to have overall responsibility for the FreeBSD documentation. A brief glance over the FreeBSD website and the "Installing FreeBSD" section in the Handbook () shows that our available documentation is still massively biased in favour of the PC. Now that the Alpha distribution is a part of the main source tree (and obviously has been for some time) I think it's high time we changed that. I can work over the FreeBSD web site content and remove some of the PC specific references where the information applies to the Alpha as well. But I don't have the requisite knowledge to be able to add to the "Installing FreeBSD" chapter, nor do I know what any of the appropriate FAQs for the Alpha distribution would be? Is there anyone on this list who could help out with this, and write the necessary sections in the documentation? If so, please get in touch, and we can try and rectify this hole in our documentation. Cheers, N -- [intentional self-reference] can be easily accommodated using a blessed, non-self-referential dummy head-node whose own object destructor severs the links. -- Tom Christiansen in <375143b5@cs.colorado.edu> To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Fri Aug 6 20:50:56 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from roguetrader.com (cold.org [206.81.134.103]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4C39415765 for ; Fri, 6 Aug 1999 20:50:37 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from brandon@roguetrader.com) Received: (from brandon@localhost) by roguetrader.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) id VAA54219 for freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org; Fri, 6 Aug 1999 21:52:48 -0600 (MDT) Date: Fri, 6 Aug 1999 21:52:48 -0600 From: Brandon Gillespie To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Subject: Botting Alphastation 500 for install: unknown console type 3 Message-ID: <19990806215248.A54089@ice.roguetrader.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; boundary=X1bOJ3K7DJ5YkBrT; micalg=pgp-md5; protocol="application/pgp-signature" X-Mailer: Mutt 0.95.5i X-Operating-System: FreeBSD 3.2-RELEASE X-PGP-Public-Key: http://www.roguetrader.com/~brandon/brandon@roguetrader_com.pubkey Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org --X1bOJ3K7DJ5YkBrT Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii I just acquired an Alphastation 500/333 which had Digital Unix 3.2 and Linux on it--I was going to wipe it and put FreeBSD on it.
