I finally got everything working by removing *all* relevant text processing software and reinstalling the ports. I picked up the libwww package off ftp.FreeBSD.org. I'm still having minor problems, like finding documentation about the packages, but I can get things to format. It should not be to hard 1) You need some space on your hard drive, FreeBSD need it's own partition, and cannot run on top of Windows... 2) You will need to -price may be innacurate, has I'm in Canada- A) Buy the FreeBSD cd-rom from Walnut Creek(30$) B) Buy the FreeBSD cd-rom+Greg Lehey's book "The Complete FreeBSD"(30-60$) C) Download FreeBSD on the internet(0$) using two boot floppies who will fetch it for you: http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/install.html Read carefully "3.If you don't have a CDROM distribution then simply read..." 3) Apache is an (easy to configure) software that will serve web pages. Well, I guess that first requires that we ask a question in return: How many bulgarian FreeBSD users are there? I think my personal counter currently reads one, that being you, so obviously my count suffers from a lack of any real information. :-) If you could give us some idea of the user count, that would help us to gauge whether or not such an effort would even be worth all of your time and energy to do the job. I don't understand most of the FreeBSD First, this is unfortunately the wrong mailing list. We deal with questions over in freebsd-questions, not freebsd-doc (which is where the documentation project people discuss their ongoing work). Second, it really sounds to me like you want someone to host your mailing lists for money (or barter), not to run your own server. I'm sure we're both intelligent people within our own respective disciplines, but if the engine in my car explodes then I take it to a mechanic, I don't spend 3 years learning about combustion engine design and outfitting a small auto repair shop in my garage so that I can finally do the work and I daresay you wouldn't either. Similarly, a Unix server of any sort isn't going to be something for a retired polymer scientist to just pick up and be managing an active mailing list with in a couple of weeks. You might just squeak by with a more pointy-clicky solution like Windows NT, but frankly that's not even a sure bet since there are some chasms which even Microsoft can't bridge with an order of complexity less than n (where n is beyond the grasp of most computer-illiterati). To put it another way, to do what you want to do will involve either paying somebody some money to do it for you or deciding to make a serious comittment to learning auto repair as a hobby. Simplifying it is not an available third option. - Jordan To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Mon Feb 22 19:50:41 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.FreeBSD.ORG [204.216.27.21]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D2A371138F; Mon, 22 Feb 1999 19:50:39 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from ghelmer@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from ghelmer@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.9.2/8.9.2) id TAA34191; Mon, 22 Feb 1999 19:50:39 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from ghelmer@FreeBSD.org) Date: Mon, 22 Feb 1999 19:50:39 -0800 (PST) From: Message-Id: <199902230350.TAA34191@freefall.freebsd.org> To: nick.hibma@jrc.it, ghelmer@FreeBSD.org, doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: docs/7679 Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Synopsis: NIS man pages are incomplete State-Changed-From-To: open->closed State-Changed-By: ghelmer State-Changed-When: Mon Feb 22 21:50:00 CST 1999 State-Changed-Why: Added a pointer to the ypinit(8) script in the ypserv(8) man page. You should first contact the author of the contributed software and send him/her a description of the problem and a patch. If he/she confirms the bug and will fix it in the next release, you can fix the typos in contrib too. -- Wolfram Schneider http://wolfram.schneider.org To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Wed Feb 24 13:28:11 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from rtp.tfd.com (rtp.tfd.com [198.79.53.206]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6997311688 for ; Wed, 24 Feb 1999 13:25:25 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from kent@tfd.com) Received: from tfd.com (nt.tfd.com [10.9.200.41]) by rtp.tfd.com (8.8.6/8.7.3) with ESMTP id NAA01279 for ; Wed, 24 Feb 1999 13:37:35 -0500 (EST) Message-ID: <36D446E6.CEF1AF57@tfd.com> Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 13:37:26 -0500 From: Kent Hauser X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.07 [en] (WinNT; I) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: webserver interconnect Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi: I've noticed that the `www' pages for freebsd.org all lock up if `www.freebsd.org' is down/unreachable/etc. I tried 'www2.freebsd.org' & was able to navigate, but for example when I hit "search" to scan mailing list archives, the query was directed to "www.freebsd.org", which was down & the reason i was using "www2" in the first place. Unfortunately, I get an error saying that I can't create the partition. LBA is on under the BIOS, and Linux has no problems with the drive. This is the third HD in my system and therefore LILO will not be running off of it so it shouldn't be limited by the BIOS when booting freebsd off of this partition. One option I haven't tried, but was hoping you would have a better solution, was to copy off the data I already have on the drive, do a low-level format to erase everything and see if I can coerce LBA under my BIOS to reduce the cylinder to <= 1024 by increasing the number of heads. Do you have ANY other solution? Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Jason A. Don't know, but the mailing lists; freebsd-translate@ngo.org.uk and davenport@berkshire.net might be able to offer more assistance. I know folks from the Japanese translation project are on the first, and the author of the modular stylesheets, Norm Walsh, is on (in fact, moderates) the second. Under 4.0-current: Applying the Ugo Paternostro's patch for libwww (in the audit trail for Greg's pr ports/10156) allows libwww to build. Patch attached. Zapping _everything_ else called by any of the docproj ports (make clean in docproj gives a handy list) and rebuilding showed promise, but attempting to build the ps format documentation gave TeX capacity errors. I eventually used a BFMI approach and increased many variables in texmf.cmf (patch attached). Am I going over the top here? make FORMATS="txt html-split ps pdf rtf tar" make install FORMATS="txt html-split ps pdf rtf tar" make clean FORMATS="txt html-split ps pdf rtf tar" all execute correctly. Comments about the formats: txt - LF delimited. Is this going to cause complaints? html-split - fine. Viewed with Netscape Communicator 4.5. ps - fine. Viewed with gv and ghostview. pdf - fine. With so many cross-references, the table of contents pages are very slow. Inevitable I suppose. Viewed with xpdf and acroread. rtf - umm. Carted it away to a Windows box, with Word 6.
