These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The report has been examined by a team member and evaluated. f - feedback The problem has been solved, and the originator has been given a patch or a fix has been committed. The PR remains in this state pending a response from the originator. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested. It makes it harder for automated man page checking scripts/programs to figure out of the reference is valid. Re-wording the sentence so that the command name doesn't appear at the beginning of the line is the best way. If you have to resort to doing something like: "The sh command does...." Fine. Some people don't like this because sometimes the text reads somewhat stilted depending on the text involved. Other people have also said that we should just capitalized the command name the way it is invoked, even if it is at the start of a line. From various tech writing/manual writing guides I've read, this is frowned upon. I prefer re-wording the sentence so that the command name doesn't appear at the beginning of a line. -Mike -- Mike Pritchard mpp@FreeBSD.org or mpp@mppsystems.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Tue Dec 7 11:31:44 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from smtp05.wxs.nl (smtp05.wxs.nl [195.121.6.57]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6231614DF3 for ; Tue, 7 Dec 1999 11:31:30 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from asmodai@wxs.nl) Received: from daemon.ninth-circle.org ([195.121.196.49]) by smtp05.wxs.nl (Netscape Messaging Server 4.05) with ESMTP id FMDY8G02.G5U; Tue, 7 Dec 1999 20:31:28 +0100 Received: (from asmodai@localhost) by daemon.ninth-circle.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) id UAA18353; Tue, 7 Dec 1999 20:30:29 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from asmodai) Date: Tue, 7 Dec 1999 20:30:29 +0100 From: Jeroen Ruigrok/Asmodai To: "Jordan K. I originally wrote the example man pages, based on the mdoc template in mdoc.samples(7) and share/misc/mdoc.template. I just commited changes that make the examples and the mdoc man pages all consistent with each other. Even the examples weren't consistent with each other before :-(. This should be the preferred ordering of section headers for new man pages, and for additions to existing man pages. However, if someone really feels that a section should be moved higher up in the man page, we shouldn't absolutely forbid it. A good example might be the BUGS section. If there is some really nasty bug that might bite you, moving it up in the man page would probably be OK, since it makes it more likely that the reader will make it that far and see the warning. Along the same lines, we should probably leave the existing man pages alone. We can probably find better projects to spend our time on. But if you are working on a man page, and re-ordering the section is just another minor change to go along with it, go for it. -Mike -- Mike Pritchard mpp@FreeBSD.org or mpp@mppsystems.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Wed Dec 8 15: 6:30 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mppsystems.com (dslmpp.pro-ns.net [208.210.148.205]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 97A881524E for ; Wed, 8 Dec 1999 15:06:24 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from mpp@mppsystems.com) Received: (from mpp@localhost) by mppsystems.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) id QAA16319; Wed, 8 Dec 1999 16:28:35 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from mpp) Date: Wed, 8 Dec 1999 16:28:35 -0600 From: Mike Pritchard To: Alexey Zelkin Cc: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: docs/15353: manpage section missing from examples Message-ID: <19991208162835.B16225@mppsystems.com> References: <199912080930.BAA55744@freefall.freebsd.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 1.0pre3i In-Reply-To: <199912080930.BAA55744@freefall.freebsd.org> Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Wed, Dec 08, 1999 at 01:30:03AM -0800, Alexey Zelkin wrote: > > >Synopsis: manpage section missing from examples > > >Description: > > > > Some manpages like ls.1 have a "COMPATIBILITY" section. > > Where is the proper location for it? > > ls.1 has it above "SEE ALSO". It's impossible to add all of them to mdoc(7). I not > sure that it's good idea. I added COMPATIBILITY, since it is used in a number of man pages. A large number of the references are from the original 4.4BSD-Lite import. I also added IMPLEMENTATION NOTES, since it was already somewhat documented by mdoc.samples(7). As for the other section headers, mdoc does state that other non-standard section headers may be added at the authors descretion. I would like to point out that while that is true, efforts should be made to work within the framework of the standard section headers. -Mike -- Mike Pritchard mpp@FreeBSD.org or mpp@mppsystems.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Thu Dec 9 9:22:35 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from cichlids.com (as3-048.rp-plus.de [149.221.238.240]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 654E015699 for ; Thu, 9 Dec 1999 09:22:32 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from alex@cichlids.com) Received: from cichlids.cichlids.com (cichlids.cichlids.com [192.168.0.10]) by cichlids.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id A1B83AB7F for ; Thu, 9 Dec 1999 18:22:59 +0100 (CET) Received: (from alex@localhost) by cichlids.cichlids.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) id SAA24523 for doc@freebsd.org; Thu, 9 Dec 1999 18:23:03 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from alex) Date: Thu, 9 Dec 1999 18:23:03 +0100 From: Alexander Langer To: doc@freebsd.org Subject: MSDOS Users Q&A addition for bootmanager Message-ID: <19991209182303.A24466@cichlids.cichlids.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 1.0i X-PGP-Fingerprint: 44 28 CA 4C 46 5B D3 A8 A8 E3 BA F3 4E 60 7D 7F X-Verwirrung: Dieser Header dient der allgemeinen Verwirrung. In fact, searching through the FAQ archives with search.cgi does give no reasonable answer for "boot AND manager" _in_ _the_ _FAQ_. (Of course it returns the multi-os tutorial.) I think the FAQ/Handbook should at least include a note to the tutorial. Maybe you also want to change "Can Windows 95 co-exist with FreeBSD" to "Can other operating systems (inclucing Windows...) co-exist..." or something like "how can I install a boot-manager"? (I often use ALT-F in Netscape or / in Lynx to search for keywords in big html-files, and so I could find a reasonable entry.) I would do patches myself, but my English is kinda bad, thus someone else should add them. Alex -- I doubt, therefore I might be.
