The sounds are cool, but much to slow (high latency). I contacted the maintainer of the xmame-project (Hans de Goede), and he told me that more FreeBSD-users have problems with xmame and sound. In the mailing- list-archive I could not find anything about this problem. I use Luigi's sound driver (pcm0), with this kernel-config: device pcm0 at isa? port ? tty irq 5 drq 1 flags 0x15 Some examples when starting xmame: -fragsize 4: Setting fragsize to 8, numfrags to 5 Fragsize = 40, Numfrags = 1632 -fragsize 128: Setting fragsize to 256, numfrags to 5 Fragsize = 256, Numfrags = 255 It seems that when xmame.x11 asks a fragsize of 128, FreeBSD doubles it. And, worse, when xmame asks a numfrags of 5, it doesn't use that number of numfrags either. Hans told me that this is the reason of the poor sound in xmame. Xmame-version: X-Mame-0.35b12.1 System: AMDK6-233, 64 Mb, FreeBSD 3.1-STABLE (23-4-1999). Does anyone have a clue? The softupdates feature is handled at the block level of the filesystem; it doesn't have a concept of "open files". This doesn't mean softupdates isn't the problem; it just means that it's not _directly_ causing your problem. Is the error message "/kernel file: table is full"? I'm guessing that with softupdates on, your COBOL program isn't exiting completely, and is hanging before it closes its files. Try running "fstat" and see if you have a lot of open files opened by "cobrun" or "rts32". If you do, run "ps axl" and take a look at the WCHAN column for those processes and let us know what it is. -Dan Nelson dnelson@emsphone.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-emulation" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-emulation Sun May 16 11:51:56 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from bach.cannongate.org (dialup29.nashua.xtdl.com [206.25.229.93]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3C54514BE9; Sun, 16 May 1999 11:51:51 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from robg@xtdl.com) Received: from xtdl.com (robg@godel.cannongate.org [192.168.1.64]) by bach.cannongate.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id OAA16369; Sun, 16 May 1999 14:51:46 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from robg@xtdl.com) From: robg@xtdl.com Received: by xtdl.com (8.8.8) id OAA06035; Sun, 16 May 1999 14:51:40 -0400 (EDT) Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 14:51:40 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199905161851.OAA06035@xtdl.com> To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org, freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Subject: Maple V Release 5.1 Sender: owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hello, I purchased Maple V Release 5.1 for Linux/W95/Mac about a month ago. In case anyone is interested, it runs great on my FreeBSD 2.2.7+PAO box. I only had to do two things. I had to alter the script "maple.system.type" to have the FreeBSD system point to Linux (added a case to the switch), and I had to run "brandelf -t Linux maplehostname" on the binary maplehostname, which is the only statically linked Linux binary. I thought it was generated by ldd-linux. I also don't have ldd-linux. That were the reasons I suggested to upgrade. The actual error was indeed "...not found... not a dynamic executable". This is a known issue. The Linux kernel allows execution of ELF images that are flagged as executable, but also as dynamic. This means that Linux allows the execution of libraries. FreeBSD only allows the execution of ELF images that are flagged as executable. > In the mean time i am trying to install your new port. linux-base and will try with it. (The Mathworks setup program seems to be decrypting (?) files on the CD; at least I haven't been able to untar anything by hand. However, the "tar" step it performs seems unsuccessful.) I have tried both the X and terminal based installation routines; running installation under FreeBSD and Linux (/compat/linux/bin) shells. An extract of a log file from the installation is below. The installation scripts for Matlab are pure evil. I stupidly did not do version one :) It bascially boils down to unpacking the cdrom onto a hardrive, making a LOT of changes including untarring and gzipping several files making the relevant modifications listed above and repacking everything and then installing. I haven't done this in a while, but I will be soon. I have some notes that I will include from Matlab5.2; be prepared to pull chunks of hair out. You will probably need to do steps involving the pd/tar.cmp for each of the toolboxes too. This was for a base install. Good Luck S Here are my install notes, more or less :) These were aided by discussion with Tom Bartol from the Salk Institute (thanks Tom). 1) cd /bin 2) ln pax tar *this is critical; /bin/tar is hard coded into the tsetup and xsetup linux executables...grrr, this caused the majority of my troubles* 3) copy all of the cdrom to a disk somewhere, $CDROM (in my case it was on another machine and then I did an nfs mount ... see below). 4) apply the arch.sh patch that you recommended > $CDROM/install > $CDROM/update/install/arch.sh > $CDROM/update/install/linstall > $CDROM/update/install/install/arch.sh > $CDROM/update/install/etc/util/arch.sh *** arch.sh Tue Jul 8 09:58:10 1997 --- arch.sh.freebsd Tue Jul 8 09:58:42 1997 *************** *** 70,75 **** --- 70,81 ---- : ;; esac + elif [ -f /usr/bin/uname ]; then # FreeBSD? + case "`/usr/bin/uname`" in + FreeBSD) + Arch="lnx86" + ;; + esac elif [ -f /bin/arch ]; then # early sun4 Arch="`/bin/arch`" fi 5) Since the good folks at the Mathworks worked feverishly to make it difficult, you also have to: upack 3 different tar.cmp (tar.tar.Z) and add the arch.sh patch > $CDROM/upate/pd/lm/tar.cmp etc/util/arch.sh (note: this is what the install leaves in $MATLAB/etc/util) > $CDROM/upate/pd/matlab/tar.cmp bin/util/arch.sh (note: this is what the install leaves in $MATLAB/bin/util) > $CDROM/upate/pd/install/tar.cmp install/arch.sh install_matlab (final version of the master install script) 6) while you have these tar files unpacked, there is one more little hack that has to get put in in the osversion check business: (sorry I don't have a diff convenient) add: elif [ -f /usr/bin/uname ]; then case $Arch in lnx86) ver='2.0.18' ;; esac This needs to end up in: $CDROM/install $CDROM/update/install/linstall $CDROM/update/pd/install/tar.cmp (in install_matlab) $CDROM/update/pd/matlab/tar.cmp (in bin/util/oscheck.sh) 7) I then nfs mounted this on /cdrom on my freebsd and did /cdrom/install & -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sean O'Connell Email: sean@stat.Duke.EDU Institute of Statistics and Decision Sciences Phone: (919) 684-5419 Duke University Fax: (919) 684-8594 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-emulation" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-emulation Thu Jun 3 2:41:12 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from gaia.euronet.nl (gaia.euronet.nl [194.134.0.10]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0910914F2E for ; Thu, 3 Jun 1999 02:41:04 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from freebsd-emulation@scc.nl) Received: from scones.sup.scc.nl (p501.asi.euronet.nl [194.134.124.65]) by gaia.euronet.nl (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id LAA01448 from for ; Thu, 3 Jun 1999 11:41:02 +0200 (MET DST) Received: (from daemon@localhost) by scones.sup.scc.nl (8.9.3/8.9.1) id LAA23048 for emulation@FreeBSD.ORG; Thu, 3 Jun 1999 11:39:27 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from freebsd-emulation@scc.nl) Received: from GATEWAY by scones.sup.scc.nl with netnews for emulation@FreeBSD.ORG (emulation@FreeBSD.ORG) To: emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Date: Thu, 03 Jun 1999 11:39:21 +0200 From: Marcel Moolenaar Message-ID: <37564D49.81B57144@scc.nl> Organization: SCC vof Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit References: <14165.38910.206452.281058@knock.econ.vt.edu>, <19990602235040.B5623@stat.Duke.EDU> Subject: Re: Matlab 5.3 Sender: owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Sean O'Connell wrote: > > On 1999 Jun 02, Russell D. The problem I still have (I think) is some residual inconsistency in accessing directories and files from within the linux programs and script files. For instance, when I run Matlab and execute the "helpdesk" command, Matlab tries to start up a web browser which will read an html file created in /tmp. But, it seems unable to create the file: -------------------------------------------------------------------- >> helpdesk To learn how to configure your Web browser type 'help docopt' sh: /tmp/MLsystem48538: No such file or directory ??? Error using ==> doc (display_file) Could not load HTML file into Web browser. Please make sure that you have a Web browser properly installed on your system. Error in ==> /disk0/local/matlab5/toolbox/matlab/general/doc.m On line 31 ==> display_file(html_file); Error in ==> /disk0/local/matlab5/toolbox/matlab/general/helpdesk.m On line 9 ==> doc; -------------------------------------------------------------------- Looking at web.m (called by doc.m): the offending line seems to be: comm = ['sh -c ''' doccmd ' ' options ' -remote "openURL( \ 'html_file ')" > /dev/null 2>&1 ''' ]; Perhaps related: after installation, I wanted to run lmstat to check communications with the license manager. This script calls arch.sh which tests for: if [ -f /bin/uname ]; then This should be satisfied: knock# ls -l /compat/linux/bin/uname -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 5368 Aug 5 1998 /compat/linux/bin/uname and: knock# /compat/linux/bin/sh bash# ls -l /bin/uname -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 5368 Aug 5 1998 /bin/uname bash# /bin/uname FreeBSD but the test always failed (running under the regular sh or /compat/linux/bin/sh). (I didn't use Marcel's patch because I'm running -STABLE, not -CURRENT). But, to get thus far: 1. Install rpm-2.5.5.tar.gz 2. Install tar-1.12-4.i386.rpm - insisted on --nodeps to install without rmt - if /compat/linux/tmp and /compat/linux/var/tmp are links rather than directories, then the post-installation scripts here and below fail, claiming "too many levels of symbolic links" 3. Install sh-utils-1.16-14.i386.rpm - also cracklib-2.7-2.i386.rpm - also cracklib-dicts-2.7-2.i386.rpm - also pwdb-0.55-1.i386.rpm - also sed-3.02-1.i386.rpm - also gawk-3.0.3-3.i386.rpm - also pamconfig-0.51-5.noarch.rpm - also pam-0.64-3.i386.rpm (some of these may not be neccesary, but I simply followed the rpm claims about dependencies) 4. /cdrom/install* -debug -lnx86 & - this worked (yesterday, it did not), installing files - however, it failed to create in /tmp a "backend" file for use by a "backend" script - I created the file (in /compat/linux/tmp) from information printed via the -debug option; for instance: MATLAB=/disk0/local/matlab5 OUTPUT_FILE=/disk0/local/matlab5/install_matlabp.out CHECK_SYMBOLIC_FOR_MAPLE=no MAPLE_LIBRARIES_DIR= LICENSE_NUMBER= < deleted > WANT_ACCESS_DIR=yes ACCESS_DIR=/usr/local/bin WANT_LICENSE_MANAGER=yes WANT_LMBOOT_LINK=yes - after starting /compat/linux/bin/sh: bash# /cdrom/update/install/backend /tmp/matlab-backend does *not* work because the backend script does not find /tmp/matlab-backend (even though ls does). Instead: bash# /cdrom/update/install/backend /compat/linux/tmp/matlab-backend runs (partially). - the backend script has created a script file /tmp/$$c which needs to be modified to call install_matlab with -lnx86 - then the /tmp/$$c script runs fine 5. I also modified $MATLAB/etc/util/arch.sh to report lnx86 in response to `uname` = FreeBSD. 6. Startup requires: matlab -lnx86 This is incomplete; the file location and access problem still needs to be resolved, but Matlab at least starts up (and can run the demo). Russ ----- Russell D. But, it > seems unable to create the file: I believe there are some inconsistencies in the way the overlaying is performed. Depending on the syscall, the result is sometimes below /compat/linux and sometimes not. This can be solved by creating the patch in advance (as you have done). Another problem is with the Linux/FreeBSD mix in conjunction with overlaying. If a Linux application passes a path to a FreeBSD application, for example /tmp/foobar then a Linux application looks for /compat/linux/tmp/foobar by default (mind the abstraction, will ya :-). With the given path and the actual location (under /compat/linux) FreeBSD binaries will complain. The first problem is something I like to address if I have the time. The second problem can be solved most of the time by using Linux binaries instead of FreeBSD binaries (in your case you can instaal a Linux webbrowser) or, alternatively, make sure the path specification matches the actual location. > Perhaps related: after installation, I wanted to run lmstat to check > communications with the license manager. And of course you may want to make sure [ exists for Linux! My guess is that this is a typical Linux/FreeBSD mix, because uname is not located in /bin for FreeBSD, but in /usr/bin! > (I didn't use Marcel's patch because I'm running -STABLE, not -CURRENT). For Linux binaries /var/tmp is the same a /compat/linux/var/tmp!!! I guess there is indefinite recursion going on... > 3. I have seen a similar error message on Windows when the exe file had actually been corrupted. Is it possible for you to try the exe files you are trying to run on a native Windows machine? If they don't work there either then there may not be anything wrong with your wine setup. Also the latest version of wine in the ports/packages collection for 3.2-STABLE is 990426, you may have better luck with that. How are you setup? Do you have an actual FAT partition with the files on it mounted or did you transfer the files to the BSD filesystem? If that's the case, how did you transfer the files; have you tried re-transferring in case something happened during the last transfer? You may want to try comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine or some of the other resources on www.winehq.com/doc.html. I'm sorry I haven't been more help.
