It has, as far as I can see, a Neo Magic graphics card, and that version of XFree86 should support the chip. X recognizes the card as "NeoMagic NM2093 rev 2". My screen supports 800x600 and 16 bpp. I can only make run in 320x200 and 8 bpp. Does anyone run the computer in anything better? If so, I'd be happy to get your configuration file for X. The setup is Cirrus Logic CL-GD5480 card (4Meg) and a 21 inch IBM 9504 Black and White VGA monitor. Funny enough the card is listed in the XF86config, and I pulled horizontal and vertical refresh rates for the monitor from the IBM website. When I run startx the screen flickers and is unreadable, going through resolutions with Ctl-Alt-+ simply shows different flicker type. If you have a similar setup and got it to work or (unlike me) you know what's going on please lemme know. Thanks Rudy. Rudy, probably the answer is because your problem is to do with XFree86, not FreeBSD. The XFree86 folks do their own mailing lists, out of majordomo@xfree86.org, and they handle subjects that aren't done by FreeBSD. While we all use XFree86 stuff, we don't maintain it. This is the wrong place to discuss this ... you should point your browser at www.xfree86.org, read the FAQ, and that'll probably do you. It sounds very much like you have got problems in your XF86Config file (mine is in the default spot, /etc/XF86Config). I usually just use the script that XFree86 supplies, XF86Setup, to select the best configuration. Since I've done this before, I go into the XF86Config file afterwards and tweak, but it gives you a stable starting point. Did you use XF86Setup to start your XF86Config file out? I know perfectly well that the Cirrus card you have is supported by the SVGA server, and quite well, in fact (I have a similar one). ----------------------------+----------------------------------------------- Chuck Robey | Interests include any kind of voice or data chuckr@glue.umd.edu | communications topic, C programming, and Unix. 213 Lakeside Drive Apt T-1 | Greenbelt, MD 20770 | I run picnic (FreeBSD-current) (301) 220-2114 | and jaunt (Solaris7). ----------------------------+----------------------------------------------- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Mon Mar 1 9: 0:52 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from geek.grf.ov.com (geek.grf.ov.com [192.251.86.19]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4BA56152F9; Mon, 1 Mar 1999 09:00:45 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from ksmm@threespace.com) Received: from pebbles (pebbles.cam.veritas.com [166.98.49.16]) by geek.grf.ov.com (8.9.0/8.9.0) with SMTP id MAA01178; Mon, 1 Mar 1999 12:00:27 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: X-Sender: ksmm@mail.cybercom.net X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.0 Date: Mon, 01 Mar 1999 11:59:58 -0500 To: hardware@freebsd.org, questions@freebsd.org From: The Classiest Man Alive Subject: Ans: Booting from large EIDE drive In-Reply-To: <36D60D0D.E58DC428@wright.edu> References: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I asked this question a little while ago and just wanted to report the answer I'd found. As I stated in my email I used XF86config script to setup the card and monitor. I then proceeded to try the accelerated server as well as all the default ones and none of them work. I also am not able to use the graphic utility XF86Setup for it gives me the same problem. Rudy. P.S. I'm only replying because you asked the questions. Thanks. You know, I've quite regretted dumping my 11/23 and 11/73 systems some years back.....What kind of tape drives? What drive controller cards? It's a boat anchor for running a full fledged Unix system, but there's lots of neat older Unix systems to run on it and lots of clever systems like RSX-11 or RT-11 to run. It'd be a sick^H^H^H^Hneat research project to see whether NFS could be implemented for something this old (and 16 bit word size too!). Well, yes. Since I did a lot of the full 22 Bit Q-bus support for 2.8 and 2.9 whilst working for UC Davis, I do indeed remember this. You can do all kinds of clever things with the 2.9 or 2.10 versions. In particular, you could do memory resident overlays for the kernel which allowed you to substantially increase the effective address space. It's with something like that that I suppose that full networking could be tried out. When I said "full-fledged" I think I'm also referring to a lot of 32 bit assumptions that have crept in. How many people on this list can still remember how to write overlay descriptor files and how to divvy up the applications to fit within a 64kb (or 128KB for split I&D) space? Also, the speed of these beasts which seemed fast then would seem *intolerably* slow now. When I did a wad of work on a v7 variant Unix for tektronix, RK05s were the disks we used. That was 4800 512 byte blocks. That's 2.4MB. This mail thread has already exceeded the available storage on that puppy. What you *can* do with these systems which the x86 systems really have not done particularly well in is run non-Unix real time systems, e.g. for lab control. I've never warmed to VxWorks and still miss RT-11. You have an ideal entry to the sport of PDP tipping, the direct ancestor to the more popular VAX tipping series. You will need: - Your new (!) PDP. - A building, preferably of 3 or more stories. Avoid serious highrise buildings as they tend to attract pedestrians. Obtain lift access to the roof of your building, and check that you can muster enough help to swing your PDP over the parapet. Find a location where there are no windows at ground level, as well as a firm pavement. Windows are a big no-no, as shrapnel can be an issue. Borrow or otherwise acquire a number of orange marker cones, and mark off the target area. Station a volunteer some distance from ground zero with a video camera, protective goggles and suitable cover. Return to the roof with your ammunition. If you have tapes, they can be thrown as streamers with some success. Save a few to spool out the window as you drive (rapidly) away after the event. It is a major mark of achievement to have an entire 1400' tape trail behind your vehicle without snagging it on anything. Marshal your help and hoist the PDP onto the parapet. Be extremely careful that you do not become entangled in it as you send it over (remove your tie, for example). Ensure that all participants can access the parapet in a safe fashion to witness the descent and termination. You may not be able to stand casually around the remains and hoist a beverage in its memory; a rapid exit may be indicated depending on the humour level demonstrated by building security (perhaps consider bringing some surplus libation for just this eventuality...). Make sure you obtain a few of the more attractively deformed components for posterity; mark them discreetly with their origin and date of shaping and your collection is off to a fine start. -- \\ Sometimes you're ahead, \\ Mike Smith \\ sometimes you're behind. \\ mike@smith.net.au \\ The race is long, and in the \\ msmith@freebsd.org \\ end it's only with yourself. \\ msmith@cdrom.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Fri Mar 5 23: 6:46 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from smtp-out1.bellatlantic.net (smtp-out1.bellatlantic.net [199.45.39.156]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5232215068 for ; Fri, 5 Mar 1999 23:06:35 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from dmm125@bellatlantic.net) Received: from bellatlantic.net (client201-122-18.bellatlantic.net [151.201.122.18]) by smtp-out1.bellatlantic.net (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id CAA23266 for ; Sat, 6 Mar 1999 02:05:57 -0500 (EST) Message-ID: <36E0D3E8.257F8F70@bellatlantic.net> Date: Sat, 06 Mar 1999 02:06:16 -0500 From: Donn Miller X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.5 [en] (Win98; I) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 Newsgroups: comp.unix.bsd.freebsd.misc To: hardware@freebsd.org Subject: ISA or PCI ethernet Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org When choosing an ethernet card, which kind should I look for? Well, the PCI card, being 64 bits instead of 16/32, will give better performance. But I wouldn't think that choosing PCI over ISA would give that much of a performance boost. I was going to get an ISA ethernet for these reasons; you never know when you'll need those PCI slots. Now something like a video or sound card, that is something that you would tend to notice the performace increase of if you upgraded from ISA --> PCI. I wouldn't think it would matter much for something like ethernet. Any comments on this? I'm running 3.1-STABLE trurl 4 % uname -a FreeBSD trurl.lternet.edu 3.1-STABLE FreeBSD 3.1-STABLE #12: Sat Mar 6 20:08:14 MST 1999 colinj@trurl.lternet.edu:/usr/src/sys/compile/TRURL i386 I've checked the setting the BIOS for the parallel port and my choices are: Normal (AT-compatible) Bidirectional (PS/2 compatible) ECP disabled The machine is detecting the zip drive (see dmesg below) and firing up the vp0 controller but I don't get any mention of scbus0 or da0 coming up and any attempt to mount a zip disk seems to result in the same thing: trurl# mount -t msdos /dev/da0s4 /mnt msdos: /dev/da0s4: Device not configured The pertinent lines from my kernel config are: controller ppbus0 controller vpo0 at ppbus? device nlpt0 at ppbus? #device plip0 at ppbus? #device ppi0 at ppbus? #device pps0 at ppbus? #device lpbb0 at ppbus? device ppc0 at isa? port? tty irq 7 controller scbus0 #base SCSI code device da0 #SCSI direct access devices (aka disks) Have I left something out? I'm obviously doing something wrong but I'm not sure what or how to fix it. Any insight would be appreciated. output from dmesg follows trurl 5 % dmesg Copyright (c) 1992-1999 FreeBSD Inc.
