The FreeBSD Project has a new machine "cvsup-master.freebsd.org"
which is going to take over as the master CVSup server for mirror
sites and committers to use. It will work like this:

* The repository will remain on freefall.

* Freefall will provide CVSup service to cvsup-master only.

* CVSup-master will update itself from freefall "very frequently",
which we hope will boil down to a maximum lag of 5 minutes or less.

* All mirror sites and committers who have been updating from
freefall will have to switch to cvsup-master. Freefall won't let
you in any more once I've flipped the switch. I plan to do that
  the weekend of July 10-11.

* Access to cvsup-master will be by cvpasswd-style authentication
only -- no IP address based access will be enabled. Your existing
"$HOME/.cvsup/auth" file will work on cvsup-master.

These changes are necessary because freefall just can't handle the
load from all the committers and mirror sites any more. There are too
many of them, and as a result many mirror sites can't even connect a
good proportion of the time. The new server should be able to handle
the load much better because (a) it's not doing anything else, and
(b) its cvsupd can run in the much more efficient "mirror mode".
You should find that your updates from the new server complete much
faster.

What you need to do:

1. If you have not already upgraded to CVSup-16.0 and sent me
your cvpasswd information, you'd better get moving. The switch
gets flipped the weekend of July 10-11, and if I don't have your
authentication set up by then you won't be able to get CVSup updates
from the master site any more. If you don't know what I'm talking
about, see my announcements entitled "PLEASE READ: CVSup access to
freefall.freebsd.org" which I posted on February 11 and 12 in the
-committers and -hubs lists. You can find copies of them here:

    http://www.freebsd.org/~jdp/cvpasswd/

2. If you are a mirror site that is using the "cvsup-mirror" port (as
all of you should), edit "/usr/local/etc/cvsup/config.sh" and change
all occurrances of "freefall" to "cvsup-master". Otherwise, edit your
supfile(s) and/or change the "-h" option on your cvsup command line to
use "cvsup-master.freebsd.org" instead of freefall.

That's it -- simple, eh? The cvsup-master server is up and running
now, so don't procrastinate. You can switch to it right away.

One final note. As mentioned above, the new server will introduce
a slight lag relative to freefall. Sorry, there's nothing we can
do about that. The lag is a maximum of 1 hour now, but it can go
way down as soon as enough of you switch to the new server. I can't
reduce it until that happens, because freefall doesn't have the
horsepower to feed it any faster while its also feeding all of you.
In practice you'll notice a much smaller lag even at first, because
your updates will finish in a matter of minutes rather than the
half-hour or so that they often take now for full mirror sites.

Thanks for your cooperation!

John
