Yes, I did read the documentation, but ran constantly in problems while compiling the new kernel so my first thought was, I'm doing something wrong. After xx times trying, lots of frustration and even more coffee to get me to the next morning, I thought I would ask the question here and see where my thoughts went wrong. With the answers received thus far, I can go on again. And then my Windows comment. I like especially to comment to Bart. What a fire!! :-) But you should look beyond comments also. Of course I'm not completely satisfied with Windows. If I was, I wouldn't take the effort to look for another O/S as you already mentioned in your mail. But insulting people with it? Please don't tell me that FreeBSD is holy. Windows has good things, I'm sure FreeBSD has good things, and so has Linux and Solaris and so on. If you close your eyes for other O/S's and see only FreeBSD as THE O/S, it looks to me you want to create another windows, but then with the name FreeBSD. I think before I patch the sources, I will give user-ppp a try. > I know of no-one who is actively trying to fix this, if Marc's patch does > not do the trick. However, the host is *not* an experimental system because it runs several WWW and FTP servers and acts as a gateway to 3 subnets - so, we can't use it as hack-and-try-system. I woulnd't try this patch, because this also changes all other PPP state machines, (not just LCP, but IPCP as well!). I spoke with Marc about a month ago and we both agreed that this bug isn't on the sppp level, but most likely is some where else: 0.71 doesn't have this problem and there hasn't been any significant changes to the sppp code since then. We also agreed that this bug *needs* to be fixed, but no one seems to be actively persuing it. > I know of no-one who is actively trying to fix this, if Marc's patch does > not do the trick. I just settled into my new job last week, and I'm finaly buying a used PC for home in a few weeks, and then I will try to dive into the layers code (eewwww) and see what there is to see. The scripts > seems to be able either to talk or listen, not both. You mail has no useful line breaks. However, you're wrong, at least in debugging mode isdnd does log all incoming connection activity but simply doesn't react on those it has no configuration entries for. For example, I'm dialing out with two different caller IDs with difficulties, my ISDN adapter is connected to the ISDN line parallel to a little telephone system and I see all the incoming calls on my isdnd display. As I have no ISDN phones with display, it's nice to see the incoming caller ID before answering it. However, I don't have a good solution for your problem, but perhaps this comment will help you some little step further. The PCI slot in which it lived, was set to use IRQ 15 (no ide). After booting, the kernel finds the card at IRQ 11 and then fails pci attach. Both ressetting the PCI slot configuration to 'auto' OR setting the PCI slot config to IRQ 11 solved the problem for me. In my opinion, this could can be caused by - a BIOS software bug that fails to initialize the card properly - a card firmware (do those cards have firmware?) that fails to accept the PCI slot settings - a software bug that fails to read the card settings properly. Because software works just fine with other PCI slot settings, I would suspect the problem to in de BIOS or in the card. After all, I've only had this Loop Bug with the 0.8x+. 0.71 works fine. I think it is something else. I think it may be terminal server specific, and I have seen no problems with T-Online users. A local provider, NetCologne, seems to have the problem, but only sometimes with certain connections/terminal servers. One could say that this is a bug with the terminal server, but no one else (Linux, Win95/NT, etc.) seems to have trouble with it. Besides, 0.71 works fine. -Paul. My isdn machine still runs a 0.71 version, and I saw something which looks like this 'auth loop' on 0.70 and 0.71, so I agree with Paul that it is prolly something else that is not handled very nicely by i4b maybe, but that is not caused by it. -- Bart van Leeuwen - bart@ixori.demon.nl - http://www.ixori.demon.nl/ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Fri Dec 17 11:46: 8 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Received: from blaubaer.kn-bremen.de (blaubaer.kn-bremen.de [195.37.179.254]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E2ECB14DC2 for ; Fri, 17 Dec 1999 11:46:05 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from nox@saturn.kn-bremen.de) Received: from saturn.kn-bremen.de (uucp@localhost) by blaubaer.kn-bremen.de (8.9.1/8.9.1) with UUCP id UAA01900; Fri, 17 Dec 1999 20:43:08 +0100 Received: (from nox@localhost) by saturn.kn-bremen.de (8.9.3/8.8.5) id TAA24617; Fri, 17 Dec 1999 19:55:24 +0100 (CET) From: Juergen Lock Date: Fri, 17 Dec 1999 19:55:24 +0100 To: Poul-Henning Kamp Cc: freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: 300 Baud V.21 modem for I4B Message-ID: <19991217195523.A23681@saturn.kn-bremen.de> References: <199912140200.DAA20856@saturn.kn-bremen.de> <2844.945164580@critter.freebsd.dk> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.95.7i In-Reply-To: <2844.945164580@critter.freebsd.dk> Sender: owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Tue, Dec 14, 1999 at 10:43:00AM +0100, Poul-Henning Kamp wrote: > In message <199912140200.DAA20856@saturn.kn-bremen.de>, Juergen Lock writes: > > > > But shouldn't just about any analog modem still be able > >to talk V.21 too? You are probably using the wrong version of the patches. The ones for NetBSD 1.4.1 are in the NetBSD/rel-1.4.x directory. You can't use the NetBSD-current ones in the NetBSD directory! We should have shipped files.i4b for older versions too, so after using the right patches please copy the "files.i4b" from the 0.83 beta over your 0.90 version. For more information, go to http://ethereal.zing.org If you're interested, get the current version out of CVS or wait 'till the next release. Please note that the code has not undergone any formal testing. The D channel decodes look to be pretty much in line with what isdntrace itself says. Its major claim to fame is being able to decode V.120 packets on the B channel (other B channel packets will just appear as a hex dump). (Caller suppression was brought in to support EG people who want to phone Alcoholics Anonymous etc, but I guess it's used more by double glazing (house window) salesmen ). Maybe Hellmuth can say if standards (& his code) support, or could support detection of "caller has suppressed his ID" ? Whether such a service indicator is available, probably varies per country, I recall British Telecom do not provide information to receiver, that caller has suppressed his number, for fear it would reduce phone units billable. Half change of subject .... (A) I'd be happy to write code to add a 3rd column to isdntel.alias to invoke a per caller dependent optional asynchronous process, to be used as a hook to EG invoke an xterm & index into a customer file or address book. (B) It would be nice to have isdntel.alias support additional synchronous activity per caller, EG get sound card to turn on & off different ring tones dependent on class of phone caller (business/social/unwanted-known-nuisance/unknown). (I haven't looked at source to see where a "stop ringing" event might be triggered from.) A & B both would both use isdntel.alias, so let's agree an isdntel.alias format that will support both A & B, then we can go off & hack. At present isdntel.alias just has EG 123456 "John Smith" asynch (A) just needs 123456 "John Smith" "/usr/local/bin/caller_lookup %d" but what about supporting synchronous events ? maybe 123456 "John Smith" "/usr/local/bin/ring_start %d" "/u.../ring_stop %d" Julian Julian H. The state of OpenBSD support is quite bad since noone running OpenBSD seems to have much interest running i4b. For OpenBSD 2.5 i know that it runs with the Teles S0/16.3 but it seems this is the only card being supported by the configuration. For OpenBSD 2.6 i have no idea and because of the lack of interest i have not even tried to make i4b 0.90 run under any OpenBSD release. In case someone wants to get OpenBSD supported again, i'm willing to help but due to the experience with people popping up asking for OpenBSD support and then disappear without traces i'm not going to put much of my time anymore into this. What is needed is someone who gets OpenBSD supported and then takes over the taks of maintaining it for the future since i run FreeBSD only and this is unlikely to change. This is in no way meant offensive, i'm just a bit disappointed by some of the previous users of OpenBSD asking for support / promising support. hellmuth -- Hellmuth Michaelis Tel +49 40 559747-70 HCS Hanseatischer Computerservice GmbH Fax +49 40 559747-77 Oldesloer Strasse 97-99 Mail hm [at] hcs.de 22457 Hamburg WWW http://www.hcs.de To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Sun Dec 19 8:23:56 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Received: from hcshh.hcs.de (hcshh.hcs.de [194.123.40.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 0A83214C91 for ; Sun, 19 Dec 1999 08:23:54 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from hm@hcs.de) Received: from hcswork.hcs.de([192.76.124.5]) (1589 bytes) by hcshh.hcs.de via sendmail with P:smtp/R:inet_hosts/T:smtp (sender: ) id for ; Sun, 19 Dec 1999 17:23:53 +0100 (CET) (Smail-3.2.0.104 1998-Nov-20 #1 built 1998-Dec-11) Received: by hcswork.hcs.de (Postfix, from userid 200) id AD5D736D0; Sun, 19 Dec 1999 17:23:52 +0100 (MET) Subject: Re: Diehl SCOM card under FreeBSD? There are valid reasons - even for normal human beings - to suppress one's caller id. Consider the following (which occurs frequently here): a technican is calling a customer from home - in case you _don't_ suppress your caller id then, the customer has your home number and you can be shure that from then on he will call you at home if he has problems, no matter if it is weekends, holidays or at 2 o'clock in the night (now don't misunderstand me here, my customers have my private telephone number ... ;-) ). There are several other scenarios where it is acceptable and necessary to suppress your caller id for privacy reasons. It has nothing to do with being rude IMHO. Other than that, here in Germany, calls from analog phones have their caller id suppressed unless the person owning the analog phone has explicitely asked for enabling the transmission of his caller id. As a result, most of the calls from analog phones don't have a caller id here. hellmuth -- Hellmuth Michaelis hm@kts.org Hamburg, Europe We all live in a yellow subroutine, yellow subroutine, yellow subroutine ... Then I built a kernel with the new "sym" driver, but my machine still wanted to use the ncr driver for the onboard SCSI-controller. I noticed errormesages from kernel regarding the isdn, so I reinstalled the saved copy of the old kernel. Still I get messages. Could sym driver probes have messed up a register on niccy-go's nvram, if it has such, or is this (most probably) just a coincidence? I've tried ',' and ' ' but still it was blank I only works with '*' or the exact number. Any idea? Suggestion: I thought it would be nice if you could use the number presentation fram the isdnd or something, like not calling back but using the number presentated over the network by the network operator for security as well as dial back. Also the admins should have the opportunity not to be called back, if I cancel the callback prompt at the client the call dies... Kind regards, Martin P. I guess this means the board is not properly reset at soft reboot.
