(yes, I may be a bit late in noticing this). This is very bad news for those of us who like (need?) BSD style licences. And it is all the more true since I know of no other similar project. Big deal, some of you might say. Perl's going the same way too. Just shove it in /usr/src/contrib and deal with it that way. But I think we're going to see a closer integration of bytecode interpreters and the OS in the future. For example, I was considering removing all of the thread and garbage collection stuff out of kaffe, hacking the Runtime class, and using this cutdown interpreter as a bootloader (although I noticed ficl is now doing that job - but I would still argue the java bytecodes might be a better option, even if just because they are more popular). But the new kaffe licence prevents me from doing that (with the latest version at least). So, would it not be a good idea for FreeBSD to adopt the most recent release under the old licence (0.9.3?), and maintain an alternative version under the BSD licence? If needs be, I'd even offer to be in charge of patches and releases and stuff (although I'd sooner not, since my time is limited). According to their that would be an interesting thing. given that mozilla is a memory pig and some JVM's are reported to be very memory hungry, it will be interesting to see if a merge of the two things will generate the biggest application ever seen or there are beneficial effects. luigi To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Wed Jan 6 03:10:55 1999 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id DAA27317 for freebsd-java-outgoing; Wed, 6 Jan 1999 03:10:55 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from labinfo.iet.unipi.it (labinfo.iet.unipi.it [131.114.9.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id DAA27310 for ; Wed, 6 Jan 1999 03:10:53 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from luigi@labinfo.iet.unipi.it) Received: from localhost (luigi@localhost) by labinfo.iet.unipi.it (8.6.5/8.6.5) id KAA05333; Wed, 6 Jan 1999 10:03:36 +0100 From: Luigi Rizzo Message-Id: <199901060903.KAA05333@labinfo.iet.unipi.it> Subject: compiler speeds To: java@FreeBSD.ORG Date: Wed, 6 Jan 1999 10:03:35 +0100 (MET) X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL23] Content-Type: text Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Just a quick comparison of javac, guavac and jikes: prova# time javac LgMC.java 6.489u 0.307s 0:06.82 99.4% 8+1684k 2+2io 0pf+0w prova# time guavac LgMC.java 0.514u 0.311s 0:00.89 92.1% 2213+5196k 0+5io 0pf+0w prova# time jikes -nowarn LgMC.java 0.310u 0.063s 0:00.38 97.3% 2311+1422k 0+1io 0pf+0w class files slightly differ in size. Mozilla 5.0 is likely to be much better than the old Netscape when it comes to memory. For one thing the binary is now about 20% of the size of 4.x and also it uses a more modular design (eg it will use the system java as a pug in rather than having it's own JVM). Jazilla is a bit of a waste, since Mozilla 5.0 is only about 10% platform dependant code, and things like the layout engine really need the extra speed from C/C++. It will also be ported to a fairly big number of platforms, and those where it is not are likely to be ones where Java is not available or memory restrictions would mean that a native binary would do a better job. At the moment I'm waiting for a workable tarball to do an update of the mozilla port. This is one of those occasions, but I solved it before I sent it. :) I'm sending it now, so that it gets archived and may help someone else in the future. --- here's the bit I typed as I thought --- I've checked the archives and can't find anything relevant. I'm running Communicator 4.06 on FreeBSD 2.2.1-RELEASE. If I have Java enabled, and go to a page where there is an applet available, an error dialog pops up with the following message:- # Error: The server's certificate has an invalid signature. You will not be able to connect to this site securely. (-8182) # jar file: /usr/local/lib/netscape/java/classes/java40.jar # path: /usr/local/lib/netscape/java/classes/java40.jar After which it locks out Communicator completely, and I have to kill it off. This of course leads to a lock file being left, which brings to the next interesting part. If I remove the lock file and run Communicator again, I obviously get the same problem. If I leave the lock file in place, and proceed with running Communicator, the applet loads and runs without any problems. This leads me to believe that it has something to do with the certs or key db files, due to the "2nd" copy not being able to access these things. --- this is as far as I got -- Thinking about that last paragraph got me wondering if any of my certificates imported due to using S/MIME had messed up the settings. They hadn't. Cutting a long story short, and borrowing the 'secmodule.db' file from another user, I had found that within Generic Crypto Svcs of the Internal PKCS#11 Module of the Securoty dialog, I had disabled DES and MD2. Enabling these again got java working as much as it does "normally". Like I said, I hope this helps someone in the future. - Dave. I'm using an xterm with a $DISPLAY correctly set (i.e. I can open windows from my xterminal and other stuff), so I don't think that this is the problem. $ echo DISPLAY localhost:0.0 I'm running 2.2.7-RELEASE (STABLE by tonight or tomorrow) and jdk1.1.7.V98-12-21.tar.gz. I followed the instructions from www.freebsd.org/java before installing and all that stuff. FWIW, I'd had no problems (did not see this error) with any of the jdk1.1.6 releases. I squirreled away this post (for obvious reasons) and now I have to ask a question. Seeing as Java is mutating like a heavily nuked protozoa, and these books have dates of 1996-1997, are they really up to date anymore? If they describe things like an ancient event handling mechanism (that deprecated for new software) its not going to be of extreme help. If it completely skips swing, well, that's not a minor omission either. Can someone who *has* these books give me some more reasons (that I can pass along to the person writing the check) for why these aren't obsolete (and if there's little chance to a new revision coming out 6 hours after the purchase is made)? However, they are still *great* books, and cover almost all of the 'basic' library. > If they describe things like an ancient event handling mechanism (that > deprecated for new software) its not going to be of extreme help. Nope, JDK1.1 is the new event model. > If it completely skips swing, well, that's not a minor omission > either. No Swing either, but there are *NO* good books on Swing, given that the final release was made about a month ago. > Can > someone who *has* these books give me some more reasons (that I can pass > along to the person writing the check) for why these aren't obsolete > (and if there's little chance to a new revision coming out 6 hours after > the purchase is made)? Because they are *THE* best reference for most of the core JDK stuff. Stuff like Swing and the Collections API are not covered, but you won't find any good books on either of these. > Thanks. Any rumors about new editions are welcome. I just looked on Amazon.com,and 'The Java Class Libraries: 1.2 Supplement' is supposed to be released any day now. I suspect with these 3 books (which would unfortunately be a hefty chunk of change) you'd have about everything you need. I can not think of *ANY* better Java reference book, and I've looked at dozens and dozens of them the last 3 years. > > Patrick Chan, Rosanna Lee, Doug Kramer > > > > The Java(tm) Class Libraries, Second Edition, Volume 1: > > java.io, java.lang, java.math, java.net, java.text, java.util Vol 1 > > > > http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0201310023/o/qid=914418229/sr=2-1/002-9203115-8455054 > > > > ==================== > > Patrick Chan, Rosanna Lee > > The Java Class Libraries : Java.Applet, Java.Awt, Java.Beans (Vol 2) > > > > http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0201310031/ref=sim_books/002-9203115-8455054 > > > > ==================== > > Patrick Chan, Rosanna Lee > > > > The Java Class Libraries : An Annotated Reference (Java Series) > > > > http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0201634589/ref=sim_books/002-9203115-8455054 Don't bother with this one, as it is superceded by Vol1 and Vol2 above. I used to think that everything they published was gold, but as of late I think they're putting out a lesser product. Unfortunately, this is to be expected given the volume of the stuff they crank out now. As I stated before, any Swing book you get will be out of date due to the latest Swing release. The changes between Swing 1.0.3 and Swing1.1 are pretty significant. Almost as much as the changes between JDK1.0 and JDK1.1. Granted all of them are out of date since it takes nearly a year to write a good book and get it published. However I wouldn't say they weren't good (not perfect maybe), but as a reference they provide a bit of good information. Check out the FreeBSD WWW page for a pointer to it. However, the only difference between the jre and the JDK is the jdk includes a couple more classes.
