Currently, I am using this one with the xe driver, but performance is rather bad (about 1.2 MBytes/sec). According to if_xe.c, this is due to the way the card is handled by the driver: * Note that the crappy PIO used to get packets on and off the card means that * you will spend a lot of time in this routine -- I can get my P150 to spend * 90% of its time servicing interrupts if I really hammer the network. Could * fix this, but then you'd start dropping/losing packets. The moral of this * story? If you want good network performance _and_ some cycles left over to * get your work done, don't buy a Xircom card. Or convince them to tell me * how to do memory-mapped I/O :) So what do people recommend here? If i try this, my laptop resets at boot times after having loaded pccard and without unmount / :( The pb seems that these lines are called _before_ ep0 is up. I can get the same pb if i forget to make a 'ifconfig ep0 down' before the 'setmac ep0 blah'... or even if ep0 is not yet configured. It's _very_ important that 'setmac ep0 blah' is called _after_ ep0 is down, and ep0 can be down only _after_ pccard has done is job (as long i've understood this process). With your solution, it seems that, when setmac is called, ep0 is not yet configured (/var/log/messages says 'ep0: no such device'). Anyway, thanks for your help, i'm still searching... -- --------------------------------------------------------- Éric Jacoboni « No sport, cigars! » (W. It allows new bus devices to have pccard attachments. sio, fdc and ata can now provide pccard attachments if so desired. The printfs have changed and are more consistant (imho) and provide more information. A probe line is now printed for pccard cards. Resources conflicts are now checked on all cards. This may cause some previously "working" configurations to break. You have been warned. Problems to me, as always. I don't believe it will work, since both PAO and -STABLE assume that they're the only thing that's messed with your system files. I tried loading PAO on a -STABLE system recently, but it didn't work because (I think) PAO was trying to modify a file already changed in -STABLE, and not expecting that, PAO crashed. -Charon To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Mon Sep 6 4:42:17 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from maild.telia.com (maild.telia.com [194.22.190.3]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0ED1914EF0 for ; Mon, 6 Sep 1999 04:42:11 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from martin@filex.se) Received: from filex.se (t2o79p41.telia.com [62.20.200.161]) by maild.telia.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id NAA04045; Mon, 6 Sep 1999 13:40:27 +0200 (CEST) Message-ID: <37D3A7A5.F115D0B7@filex.se> Date: Mon, 06 Sep 1999 13:38:13 +0200 From: Martin Nilsson X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.6 [en] (WinNT; I) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: O2Micro OZ6833 cardbus-pcic update References: <37CBF33D.36DA7622@filex.se> <000e01bef80a$57d21620$da8e9ccc@free> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Update to my previous message: I have the OZ68333 controller and my DE-660 card working now. It is still recognized as an intel 82365 in pccard/pcic.h but it seems to work OK. My biggest problem was that sysinstall and the documentaion states that pccard_ifconfig in rc.conf should contain the name of the interface to configure when it instead should contain the IP and netmask in ifconfig style. The boot process is also way to fast to let the card initialize and therefor all daemons that try to bind to the card (syslogd, mysql etc.) exits with error. I'm going to investigate any remaining problems, clean up my changes and post the rest so we can get it tested on more computers than mine. /Martin On Tue, Aug 31, 1999 at 05:22:37PM +0200, Martin Nilsson wrote: > I have recently upgraded my Siemens Scenic Mobile 350 from 2.2.7-PAO > to 3.2-STABLE. > > The machine is equipped with an OZ6833 PCI-CardBus controller, under > 2.2.7-PAO i was able to modify sys/pci/pcic_p.h to think it was a > Cirrus 6832 ISA-PCcard controller. The PAO patches don't apply cleanly to -STABLE, be prepared for a lot of hacking around to get them all applied manually. The amount of hacking varies and PAO things filter through the standard CURRENT/RELEASE trees. > I don't believe it will work, since both PAO and -STABLE assume that > they're the only thing that's messed with your system files. "PAO crashed" doesn't make any sense. The patch command that tries to patch your system to PAO can segv when trying to apply PAO patches to -STABLE, I checked the offending patches and applied them in smaller groups or by hand. This obviously shouldn't happen. The box I'm on right now is STABLE as of a couple of weeks ago plus PAO. Running Xfree 3.3.3.1 & enlightenment 0.15.5/fvwm2. This is my work system (ie use it all day, every day), and its great. Admittedly, I don't tend to push the machine too hard, but speed seems fine, and quality as good as I've seen. No 3D, though, which is a bit of a bummer... Don't count on getting the integrated audio controller working, though. Even OSS doesn't give *guaranteed* support. Nick. I have sound running nicely after (finally) matching the irq's/dma/IO parameters correctly in bios and kernel under FreeBSD 3.3-RC on Dell Inspiron 3500. I did the PAO install as desscribed after doing an ordinary install of BSD. The PCMCIA modem seems to work, I haven't used it but the messages from pccardd indicate it has initialized a serial port successfully. The 3C574TX-B 3Com Fast Etherlink III does not. I did make one change to /etc/pccard.conf; I changed the name of the 574TX entry so that the 574B would recognize it. Following is my /var/log/messages section from the Etherlink III. My dumpcis for the 589d looks exactly the same as yours. In fact, I don't see anything wrong with what you posted, so here are some thoughts: Does your dmesg show it finding the pcmcia controller properly? Have you tried turning off the machine before booting FreeBSD, or are you rebooting from Windows? FreeBSD seems to have problems resetting 3c589s after Windows has been using them. Is your system able to allocate resources for your pcmcia modem properly? Are you sure nothing else (e.g. sound) is using IRQ 10? I run a 3C589D-Combo with FreeBSD 3.2 RELEASE and PAO3 on a Toshiba 230CDX. Card detection runs fine and is assigned to ep0 interface. The only little problem is I need to force BNC connexion detection with link1 parameter in /etc/pccard.conf: card "3Com Corporation" "3C589" config default "ep0" 10 insert logger -s 3Com Etherlink III inserted insert /etc/pccard_ether $device link1. remove logger -s 3Com Etherlink III removed remove /etc/pccard_ether_remove $device dmesg still displays UTP connexion (ep0: utp/bnc[*UTP*] address 00:06:08:f1:fe:1f) but link is ok on BNC port. I have no 10BaseT cable to test if it works differently with UTP lan cable. Previously to the installation of PAO, with zp0 support, BNC was automatically detected (or by default?). I may do something wrong since I am new to FreeBSD! Yves. It tries to use one of the "generally available" IRQ's, specified below, beginning with IRQ 3: > pccard.conf is... > > # Generally available IO ports > io 0x240-0x360 > # Generally available IRQs (Built-in sound-card owners remove 5) > irq 3 10 11 13 15 > # Available memory slots > memory 0xd0000 96k Unfortunately, IRQ 3 is most likely in use (normally by COM2 -- sio1), hence it fails. Change the relevant line in /etc/pccard.conf to: config 0x1 "ep0" 10 and everything should work fine. If it doesn't, try the following command: pccardc enabler 0 ep0 -m 2000 d0000 16 -a 300 -i 10 Hope this helps, Frank To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Tue Sep 7 20:22:22 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from dnvrpop3.dnvr.uswest.net (dnvrpop3.dnvr.uswest.net [206.196.128.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 703C614EBA for ; Tue, 7 Sep 1999 20:22:20 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from sitongia@uswest.net) Received: (qmail 28698 invoked by alias); 8 Sep 1999 03:22:03 -0000 Delivered-To: fixup-freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org@fixme Received: (qmail 28654 invoked by uid 0); 8 Sep 1999 03:22:02 -0000 Received: from hdialup175.dnvr.uswest.net (HELO ?204.107.134.7?) Yes, I've done that configuration stuff before on my Libretto, and it worked there. Thanks for your help. I hope you don't mind my cc'ing the list, since I'm providing more information. ==Leonard Sitongia sitongia@uswest.net http://www.users.uswest.net/~sitongia/ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Tue Sep 7 21:43:36 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from thoth.mch.sni.de (thoth.mch.sni.de [192.35.17.2]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 12CAC14F42 for ; Tue, 7 Sep 1999 21:43:25 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from andre.albsmeier@mchp.siemens.de) X-Envelope-Sender-Is: andre.albsmeier@mchp.siemens.de (at relayer thoth.mch.sni.de) Received: from mail2.siemens.de (mail2.siemens.de [139.25.208.14]) by thoth.mch.sni.de (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id GAA22906 for ; Wed, 8 Sep 1999 06:42:35 +0200 (MET DST) Received: from curry.mchp.siemens.de (curry.mchp.siemens.de [139.25.42.7]) by mail2.siemens.de (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id GAA22412 for ; Wed, 8 Sep 1999 06:42:34 +0200 (MET DST) Received: (from daemon@localhost) by curry.mchp.siemens.de (8.9.3/8.9.3) id GAA78845 for ; Wed, 8 Sep 1999 06:42:34 +0200 (CEST) Date: Wed, 8 Sep 1999 06:42:31 +0200 From: Andre Albsmeier To: Doug White Cc: Andre Albsmeier , FreeBSD-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Recommendation for a GOOD 100 MBit Ethernet card wanted Message-ID: <19990908064231.A1059@internal> References: <19990905192333.A34635@internal> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 1.0pre2i In-Reply-To: Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Tue, 07-Sep-1999 at 15:36:03 -0700, Doug White wrote: > On Sun, 5 Sep 1999, Andre Albsmeier wrote: > > > I am looking for a 100MBit Ethernet card for use with 3.2-STABLE which > > does perform better than the "Intel EtherExpress(TM) PRO/100 PC C". > > Currently, I am using this one with the xe driver, but performance is > > rather bad (about 1.2 MBytes/sec). What I'm saying is that the previous PCCARD code did not support fast interrupts at all, and I was assuming (possibly wrongly) that the re-written PCCARD code would overcome that weakness, so that people with PCMCIA modems could run reliably run faster. The 2.* code used the 'normal' interrupt mechanism for serial interrupts, which imposes a much higher load on the system than fast interrupts which causes the system to have silo overflows. I just installed the PCCARD version of the Aug 27th snapshot of -current onto an old Dell Lattitude Lm. I'm very impressed that the installation found my 3c589d ethernet card & basically "just worked." It even managed to obtain its network info via DHCP on a DSL link. My sole disappointment was that the only obvious way to regain pcic support (w/o rebuilding the kernel) after rebooting after the install was to copy the kernel off the dist. floppy & onto the local disk. Then I still needed to rebuild a kernel because that one didn't have any pty's built in. It seems like a clear violation of POLA to install via a PCCARD kernel but have a non-PCCARD kernel when you reboot. So perhaps there should be a kernel.PCCARD built from i386/conf/PCCARD in the base distribution & perhaps sysinstall should be smart enough to copy it to /kernel when doing an install from the PCCARD floppies. This might keep some newbies from blowing their feet off, at least. Anyway, I'm impressed that I can run straight FreeBSD on my laptop & not get forced into PAO. Thanks! Since I'd like to be able to dual boot FreeBSD on one I'm interested in finding out what works and what doesn't with 3.2 ( or 3.3 since it's coming out soon ). After spending sometime looking at different notebooks on the web I'm starting to lean towards Winbook ( I know, isn't the name ironic since I want it to run FreeBSD? ), specifically : WinBook XL2 My main concerns of course are : Video, Network, Modem and Sound ( in that order ). The specs for the machine can be found at : http://www.winbook.com/xl2400128.html I think the video will probably be ok, but here's my choice of NIC's from winbook : AmbiCom 10bT Network Card 3COM 10 Mbps LAN PC Card AmbiCom XL/XLi/XL2 10/100bT CardBus 3COM XL/XLi/XL2 10/100bT LAN CardBus My understanding was that FreeBSD doesn't support cardbus, so the last two are out. What about the 3COM 10Mb, it doesn't say what the chipset is so it's not much to go on. Does anyone else know if the stuff from Winbook will work OK with FreeBSD? Another question would be, if you had your choice of any notebook to run FreeBSD on, what would you pick? Video: ATI 3D Rage LT Pro It works. I have an Asus/Chembook F7400 with the same video chip. I used one of the Mach64/Rage card settings (if you pick the wrong one, X will crash on initialization) in xf86config, killed all modelines except for the 60Hz ones, and it works like a dream. Network: I'd go with the Ambicom. The 3com card is probably a 3c589, but 3com keeps making new revisions of that same card. The Ambicom is a nice, simple, generic NE2000 compatible, and the sample pccardd.conf file from 1999/05/15 already has that card listed (the AmbiCom 8002T). Modem: The Winbook drivers page for the XL2 says the modem is an LT WinModem. _WinModem_. 'nuff said. Sound: This ESS Maestro is a PCI sound chip, as far as I have been able to figure out (my laptop has the same sound chip). That means that sound support will be a long ways away. However, I haven't taken a look at commercial sound support, so you may or may not be able to get sound working for a price. > The specs for the machine can be found at : > > http://www.winbook.com/xl2400128.html > > I think the video will probably be ok, but here's my choice of NIC's > from winbook : > > AmbiCom 10bT Network Card > 3COM 10 Mbps LAN PC Card > AmbiCom XL/XLi/XL2 10/100bT CardBus > 3COM XL/XLi/XL2 10/100bT LAN CardBus --Ludwig Pummer ( ludwigp@bigfoot.com ) To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Fri Sep 10 3: 7:55 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from zamok.crans.ens-cachan.fr (zamok-ext.crans.ens-cachan.fr [138.231.136.3]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6B52614C85 for ; Fri, 10 Sep 1999 03:07:45 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from Olivier.Saut@crans.ens-cachan.fr) Received: from marid.crans.ens-cachan.fr (marid.crans.ens-cachan.fr [138.231.137.76]) by zamok.crans.ens-cachan.fr (8.9.3/jtpda-5.3.1) with ESMTP id MAA25590 for ; Fri, 10 Sep 1999 12:07:37 +0200 Received: by marid.crans.ens-cachan.fr (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 88BC4144; Fri, 10 Sep 1999 12:07:37 +0200 (CEST) Date: Fri, 10 Sep 1999 12:07:37 +0200 From: Olivier Saut To: freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.org Subject: Migrating from PAO to -STABLE Message-ID: <19990910120737.D17497@marid.crans.ens-cachan.fr> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Mailer: Mutt 1.0pre2i Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I am now trying to follow -STABLE, so I had to leave PAO. I run it almost exclusively at 1024x768 x [16,24]bpp. It just took a few tries with xf86config to pick the proper high-res monitor and tweak the monitor's sync ranges to only allow for 60Hz video modes. And then I removed the higher refresh range modelines, just to be on the safe side. I found that an XF86Config generated with XF86Setup (or xf86setup?) didn't have the long list of available modelines. Also, the Mach64 server didn't handle the normal DefaultColorDepth option in the config file, so I whipped up a little 'startx' script of my own that runs the real startx with the proper command line options. > > Modem: > > The Winbook drivers page for the XL2 says the modem is an LT WinModem. > > _WinModem_. Sorry, I've never needed to use a PCMCIA modem under FreeBSD. Way back when I tried (2.2.6-R with PAO) I couldn't get the serial port to work properly and gave up since it wasn't important. Any PCMCIA non-Winmodem modem you find should work just fine. If you want a list of modems that run out-of-the-box, use CVSwep and look at /etc/pccard.conf.sample > > Sound: > > This ESS Maestro is a PCI sound chip, as far as I have been able to figure > > out (my laptop has the same sound chip). Using the pcm driver ( not the new one, stock 3.2R ) The ESS is not an ES1371. True, my point was simply that there are some PCI based sound cards that work with 3.2. The specs say that its "SoundBlaster Pro, MS Sound System" compatable. I don't know if that will actually buy me anything though. > > Hey!
