It allows you to mount NetWare volumes, send messages, print to NetWare printers along with other misc functions. It has been tested and works with NetWare 3.x, 4.11, 5.0 and Mars_nwe (currently all operations performed only in bindery mode). -- Boris Popov http://www.butya.kz/~bp/ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-net" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-net Mon Jun 7 6:52:41 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-net@freebsd.org Received: from noc.demon.net (server.noc.demon.net [193.195.224.4]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2FE4315405 for ; Mon, 7 Jun 1999 06:52:25 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from fanf@demon.net) Received: by noc.demon.net; id OAA25547; Mon, 7 Jun 1999 14:52:23 +0100 (BST) Received: from fanf.noc.demon.net(195.11.55.83) by inside.noc.demon.net via smap (3.2) id xma025526; Mon, 7 Jun 99 14:52:11 +0100 Received: from fanf by fanf.noc.demon.net with local (Exim 1.73 #2) id 10qzoN-0005Cj-00; Mon, 7 Jun 1999 14:51:35 +0100 To: dgaudet@arctic.org From: Tony Finch Cc: net@freebsd.org Subject: Re: cidr aliases In-Reply-To: Message-Id: Date: Mon, 7 Jun 1999 14:51:35 +0100 Sender: owner-freebsd-net@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Dean Gaudet wrote: > >We have an application which requires a godawfully large number of aliases >on one box. We've been doing this at Demon since NetBSD 1.0 but haven't released the code for various reasons until now. I've PRed our patch as kern/12071 if you want to look at it. An alias is a net alias if the address is a network base address, i.e. address & ~netmask == 0. I also added some code to allow a listen()ing daemon to bind to a netaliased interface. Because mbufs are shared, if there is a local receiver for multicast traffic this might cause the bridged packets to be scrambled before they go out. A solution (which i think is implemented on my local version but i haven't committed yet 'cause of lack of time) is to do an m_pullup() of enough stuff so that the headers are kept in a separate place. There is a performance penalty of course in doing that, but correctness is more important in these cases... cheers luigi -----------------------------------+------------------------------------- Luigi RIZZO, luigi@iet.unipi.it . I have an Ethernet hub and I can see the "Collision" light illuminate nearly steadily ON when transfering a large file from the FreeBSD box to the Windows box (but not the other way around). I did post a PR a couple of FreeBSD versions ago, when I first noticed the problem, and got one of those blanket "must be your hardware" answers. Since the poor performance is not a big deal in my environment, I have not pursued a resolution more insistently. But, most definitely, since about FreeBSD 2.2.3 (give or take a few) I have observed this poor TCP performance along with the high volume of network collisions when transfering large files out of the FreeBSD box. This problem was not evident in the early 2.x releases. For whatever it's worth. - Bill. However, when it came to the transmission between the two FreeBSD boxes, I did not observed transmission speed surpassing 50Kbps ! I've tried to solve this problem for about two weeks but in vain. Currently, I've upgraded both FreeBSD machines into 3.2-Release and the awful transmission performance problem has been completely vanished ! But, I'm still in curiosity. Any good ideas, suggestions or comments ? Thanks folks. Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-net@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hello! We have two ZNYX ZX314 boards in a FreeBSD 2.2.8-based router. This system is the main router for one of our POPs. It continually spews de0: abnormal interrupt: transmit underflow and doesn't appear to be fixing itself anytime soon. We have other de-driven (SMC & Netgear) boards in 2.2 and 3.X boxen and they simply mention they're adjusting the transmith threshhold and stop whining. tulip_print_abnormal_interrupt() makes this check: if (mask == TULIP_STS_TXUNDERFLOW && (sc->tulip_flags & TULIP_NEWTXTHRESH)) { sc->tulip_flags &= ~TULIP_NEWTXTHRESH; if (sc->tulip_cmdmode & TULIP_CMD_STOREFWD) { printf(" (switching to store-and-forward mode)"); } else { printf(" (raising TX threshold to %s)", &thrsh[9 * ((sc->tulip_cmdmode & TULIP_CMD_THRESHOLDC TL) >> 14)]); } } For some reason this isn't being followed. In addition, during the znyx media probe: TULIP_CSR_WRITE(sc, csr_command, TULIP_CSR_READ(sc, csr_command) & ~TULIP_CMD_TXTHRSHLDCTL); This looks a bit ominous (turning off the TX thresh control?). Do the Znyx cards not support adjusting the TX thresh, or is this some odd bug? Unfortunately this is a production box so I can't go rebooting it every hour, but I can make small adjustments. I'm going to disable the relevant printf()s anyway, but I hope no packets are getting smashed in the process. You can't. It requires the smbfs in kernel, which isn't present in FreeBSD (yet). You should use the net/shlight port for mounting exported SMB filesystems (i.e. from Winbl^H^Hdows and OS/2 and Samba). No problem so far - I've set up several like this using natd on 2.2.8. The new wrinkle is this: I need to connect to two ISPs (DSL & Cable Modem), ideally with automatic failover and load balancing when multiple internal PC's are generating internet traffic. I know that this requires running gated (or routed) to receive RIP or OSPF messages from the ISPs, and to select the best outgoing ISP's route. The key question is: while the routing program probably requires a third NIC so that each external link has its own device, how can natd handle multiple external internet interfaces. I've been searching in several directions: 1) Using "ifconfig alias" option to map the two external addresses assigned by the two ISPs into the same NIC - would seem to confuse the routing of outgoing traffic, although I have 'aliased' reliably on a fbsd web server (all in the same subnet) and have also seen multiple subnets peacefully coexist on the same physical network. 2) Somehow get natd or another NAT server to recognise two outgoing interfaces - this would also seem to confuse the functioning of the routing program. 3) Configure an internal pseudo-device (tun ?) or divert socket, link between natd (and the internal NIC) on the inside and gated or routed (and the two external NICS) on the outside. This way, natd and the routing program would be completely isolated and wouldn't need to know that the other existed. ISP1 - NIC1 \ gated - TUN - natd - NIC3 - internal net / device ISP2 - NIC2 The third seems the best choice, but I haven't seen any discription of this type of configuration. Any advice ? I hope I am not posting this question to the wrong place. Maybe somoene on this list can enlighten me, as I'm having trouble finding FreeBSD specific socket information. Here is my situation, I am developing a multiplexed IO webserver (select() based, single process) to serve rather large files over the web (most of them around 5 or 6 megabytes). I usually have about 300 people simultaneously connected to the servers during peak times. When I started this project, I believe I was using 2.2.6. I'm currently running 3.2-RELEASE but may still have some remnants of code that is no longer useful or needed. The root of my problem seems to be limits in the OS for a single process to be handling over 200 simultaenous users (usually 2 filedescriptors for each person, 1 socket and one file). When I started back in 2.2.6 and 2.2.8 days I had to compile with -DFD_SETSIZE=512 in order for select() to be able to handle the amount of connections I had on the server. Since 3.0 It looks like the default is 1024, but I still run into a problem that I *THINK* is related to th FD_SETSIZE or possibly select(). Usually somwhere around 200 or 220 simultaneous connects, all of my connections get dumped by select(). Every active socket connection gets flagged in the Error Set by select() and my server drops all of the clients. It then rather quickly builds up again as teh users reconnect to the server, but it is causing some very serious quality of service issues. In the past I've thrown proceesors at the problem, and it has seemed to work to an extent. I used to run all of the servers load balacned across four machines, but I'd like to eliminate the last of the bugs in the software, solididy it's networking code, and let it handle more connections per machine. I don't think there is any reason why the machine shouldnt be able to handle 500 or even a thousand simultaneous connections smoothly, my cpu is rarely below 95% idle. Any pointers on ways to fix my select() problems would be greatly appreciated!
