If it's builtin to an HP LH4 or similar then you can disable the raid controller from bios and just use the ncr 895 chip without using the raid. (ymmv. worked for me on 3.2-release. The relevent config settings look like this: controller ahc0 controller scbus0 at ahc0 bus 0 device sd0 disk sd0 at scbus0 target 0 unit 0 And here's what I see in dmesg: (ahc0:0:0): "Adaptec AEC-4412BS 1.2." type 0 fixed SCSI 2 sd0(ahc0:0:0): Direct-Access 8999MB (70420800 134 byte sectors) The problem? The array on LUN 0 has a capacity of 34381MB, not 8999MB. For some reason, it's reporting 134 byte sectors, instead of the standard 512 byte sectors (which would produce the correct disk size). What could be causing this, and how can I correct it? Another thing I notice is that I cannot seem to access sd0 with anything. Any attempt returns "Device not configured". Suggestions? What could be causing this, and how can I correct it? If you want to change the sector size, edit mode page 3. To find out how to edit mode pages, read the scsi(8) man page. The sector size may or may not be changeable from a mode page. If it isn't (or even if it is), you should look at the manual for this device. After you change the sector size, you may have to low-level format the array. (see scsiformat(8)) > Another thing I notice is that I cannot seem to access sd0 with > anything. Any attempt returns "Device not configured". > Suggestions? > > (Please CC me in replies) It's hard to say what's wrong there. It could be any number of things. It would be much easier to diagnose if you were running 3.x. It may have something to do with the sector size, though. I dunno for sure. Well, that was an adventure in confusion. The man page is not entirely helpful for someone who has never even heard of mode pages before. Anyway, I figured out that scsi -f /dev/rsd0.ctl -m 3 was probably a good place to start. Yeah, that's why you can't talk to the disk. The sd driver gets the sector size from the SCSI READ CAPACITY command. > Any other suggestions? You might try booting with a 3.2 boot floppy, just to see if it comes up with the same sector size. This really sounds like a configuration issue of some sort. If the 3.2 floppy doesn't come up with the correct information, you'll probably need to talk to Adaptec tech support or something. If the array insists on reporting bogus parameters, there's not much we can do on the FreeBSD side of things. I have had the same problems with some IBM drives which claimed to have 520 Bytes/Sector. I finally used a Tool from Dan Stricks - you may find the discussion on freebsd-scsi archive. Another way might be low-level formating using the Adaptec BIOS - at least on a 1542 it sets the sector size properly to 512 Bytes. -- B.Walter COSMO-Project http://www.cosmo-project.de ticso@cicely.de Usergroup info@cosmo-project.de To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-scsi" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-scsi Thu Aug 5 14:34:19 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Received: from freya.circle.net (morrigu.circle.net [209.95.64.11]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2A8231556F; Thu, 5 Aug 1999 14:34:12 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from tcobb@staff.circle.net) Received: by FREYA with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2448.0) id ; Thu, 5 Aug 1999 17:30:23 -0400 Message-ID: From: tcobb@staff.circle.net To: salyzyn@dpt.com, freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG, freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG, michaelh@cet.co.jp, kirk@bohica.net, lyndon@MessagingDirect.COM, bonnetf@bart.esiee.fr, kwc@world.std.com, horton@cft.net, gambert@cft.net Subject: RE: DPT RAID I2O Card driver Date: Thu, 5 Aug 1999 17:30:22 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2448.0) Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----_=_NextPart_001_01BEDF89.B9C04D10" Sender: owner-freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org This message is in MIME format. Subject: DPT RAID I2O Card driver

I have a preliminary SCSI driver for the following series of DPT

`I2O' controller cards and FreeBSD 2.2.X:

        PM1554

        PM2554

        PM3754

        PM3755

This driver has passthrough (a CLI based configuration tool runs

with it native on FreeBSD 2.2.8 at least). The driver has *no* timeout

handling, for example, so it's not full production yet, but it was based

on the released BSDi BSD/OS 4.0.1 DPT driver, so it should have

some ingrown stability. It handles Ultra 2, Ultra 3, Fibre, dual-port

fibre and up to 4 SCSI channel cards.

I am interested in people to test the driver and tools, contact me if

you currently own the above DPT controller cards and I'll curl up the

driver source and tools.

If there is anyone interested in porting it to the 3.X or 4.X environments,

I must admit there is limited will currently to do that here, thus porting

it to the CAM layer in the later OS' would be highly appreciated.

I think he really needs to look in the documentation for this device or talk to Adaptec tech support. This is a RAID array, not a hard disk and I find it a little hard to believe that an array would require low-level formatting to work. It's possible, but it seems a bit odd. You'd think that the array controller or setup software would do whatever is necessary to make things work when you configure the disks into an array. Another odd thing is that I can't find any documentation or information about this controller on Adaptec's web site. It looks like all the stuff on their web site is PCI-based, not SCSI-SCSI controllers. What we are interested in doing is creating a new raid off some disks we added in and getting freebsd to format the raid without rebooting if possible. We are running FreeBSD 3.2-STABLE on a PII 333 with 256mb ram and a Adaptec 2940 Ultra Scsi controler. The Adaptec controler has just the system disk (9 gig SCSI) and the Mylex controler. The Mylex contoler had a raid of 6 x 18gig disks on one channel and 2 x 9 gig on another. The kernel is limited to 20MHz by #define SCSI_NCR_DFLT_SYNC 12 If you set this to (10), or put options SCSI_NCR_DFLT_SYNC=10 before rebuilding, it will do 40Mhz. This is because 10 means 40Mhz, 11, 33Mhz, and 12, 20Mhz. However, if you check the CVS repository, there are some issues to do with the microcode. The 3.2 release has ncr.c version 1.141.2.1. The main line version 1.146 has a change to the microcode to stop using a register which used to be free, but now has a meaning. In principle this should affect all chips from the 875 onwards, but it is clear that people often get away with it. -----Original Message----- From: Kevin [mailto:kbock@primenet.com] Sent: Friday, August 06, 1999 9:51 AM To: freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: DC-390U2W support, continued Hey, sorry for my previous stuipidity.. here's my problem.. There is none for the driver itself. DPT owns the driver. I am the author of the BSDi driver. The sources are completely unencumbered (I pushed for opensource). The only legal implication of the sources are the I2O headers which belong to the I2O committee. They have given dispensation to release the headers for compilation purposes only and not for original development without joining the committee (header follows). I am not sure whether FreeBSD can take it, since we were rejected for inclusion into Linux because of the GNU's their restrictive GPL. I can get Roger Cummings to *push* for an adjustment to the headers for FreeBSD if you believe it is necessary. It has a Symbios Logic Series 3 differential controller with 64mb. With the package came bundled an NT management/setup utility, and one for BSDI. The NFS server I put together is a DEC 300i+ with 256mb ram, Qlogic fw-scsi adapter and 100baseT ether running FreeBSD 3.2r. I took a look at the BSDI package...it looks like a package made by Symbios.. It included the following programs: drivutil* healthck* logutil* parityck* raidutil* fwutil* lad* nvutil* putplog* rmscript.sh* Essentially, setup and monitoring utilities....While I can not run them, I had man pages to go over..thats about it. They have been in -current long enough (IMHO) to have me convinced they don't cause problems with older NCR chips. (The changes affect all chips, not just the Ultra-40 versions.)
