Don wasn't hired to make web pages either, actually, and hasn't. It's another group of people who are doing and have done the actual content of this site, a group independant of freebsd.org in most senses of the word. Why independent? The number one good reason is that getting someone added to committers just so that they can update a news entry adds a lot of overhead, to put it mildly, as does the process of getting them an account on freefall (a machine we're now trying to *tighten up* access to rather than widen) and acquainted with ssh and/or kerberos. Since there is also no existing mechanism in the current web pages at freebsd.org which allows "reporters" to easily drop off their copy for publication, a real bottleneck is created in trying to recruit a true "advocacy team" which can proactively go out and gather stuff for immediate publication without having to take a long detour through the PR database and some overworked committer first. This also seems to be how a lot of the more dynamic sites are being run - a lot of CGI automation and roving reporters dropping off their stories for the top page of the day. Since I didn't see this getting created at www.freebsd.org any time soon, it simply made sense to set up another box where the advocacy folks could play with mysql and postgres and Apache/php3 and whatever else they felt necessary to use in trying to create a dynamic set of pages which present more timely PR information to our users and our advocates alike. Half the tools they're playing with I probably wouldn't even want installed on freefall at all, at least not until everything was past the experimental stage and a clearer picture of all the various requirements was available. We're still quite a ways from offering FAQ-o-matic style interfaces to developers and auto-generating gallery/PR/news content based on their submissions and the folks working on it are going to be doing a lot of prototyping before they're through (assuming that ever happens :). A production machine is not a good place to play with prototypes, but a relatively little-known advocacy.freebsd.org server is. If you're concerned about connectivity and/or mirror convenience, wouldn't it be possible to simply mirror some portion of that machine for redistribution? - Jordan To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-www" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-www Mon May 10 14:38:38 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from baerenklau.de.freebsd.org (baerenklau.de.freebsd.org [195.185.195.14]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 67E5B1506B; Mon, 10 May 1999 14:38:24 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from wosch@panke.de.freebsd.org) Received: (from uucp@localhost) by baerenklau.de.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with UUCP id XAA25237; Mon, 10 May 1999 23:38:23 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from wosch@panke.de.freebsd.org) Received: (from wosch@localhost) by paula.panke.de.freebsd.org (8.9.3/8.8.8) id XAA00650; Mon, 10 May 1999 23:20:24 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from wosch) Message-ID: <19990510232024.04516@panke.de.freebsd.org> Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 23:20:24 +0200 From: Wolfram Schneider To: Nicholas Lalumiere , Wolfram Schneider Cc: www@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Question About Support References: <199905102038.QAA28621@demented.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.89i In-Reply-To: <199905102038.QAA28621@demented.net>; from Nicholas Lalumiere on Mon, May 10, 1999 at 04:38:22PM -0400 Sender: owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk [cc: www@freebsd.org] On 1999-05-10 16:38:22 -0400, Nicholas Lalumiere wrote: > Dear Webmaster of FreeBSD, > I gladly email you to ask you some questions and tell you some ideas. Our program currently supports FreeBSD - in fact we've found it to be the most stable platform which is why we host our own sites on your OS. Our site currently gets 1.5 million hits per month and FreeBSD doesn't even hiccup. In addition we performed a lot of the product development on FreeBSD. Does FreeBSD offer a certification process? We would be happy to send over a free copy for someone to verify the software's complete compatibility with FreeBSD. We would like to be able to use a FreeBSD compatible graphic of some sort (on our website and product info) - do you by any chance have one of these? Software Product Info: Name: LynkStation URL: http://www.tri-polar.com/ls/ Description: LynkStation is website software designed to increase the number of visitors to a website without all the usual work. With LynkStation, website owners automatically run a database driven Links Page and at the same time spread the word about their products and/or services to thousands of Internet users weekly. Detailed additional information and free online demos available at http://www.tri-polar.com/ls/ Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. This opened up an avenue for development that I would like to volunteer to make happen - configuration tools. Being Windows people, they found FreeBSD intimidating - configuring a sound card, adding a new device, or setting up userPPP were things they were used to having done for them. These people now run Linux, as they fell into the "UNIX is too difficult for me" trap, and liked the comfort of easy configuration. Your documentation is great, but some people need to be started more slowly. Even after following your documentation, a user may not think of creating a symlink /dev/modem to their device node (which is needed, for example, by Minicom). I like the idea of easy configuration as an /option/ to those who would like it - particularly newcomers to UNIX. With this in mind, I searched my install set for such utilities but couldn't find them, nor see them on the wanted projects list. Would you be interested in such tools being developed for FreeBSD, and could I organise such a development team? I don't want to duplicate somebody else's work, so please point me in the right direction if such work has been undertaken. Your comments on this subject wold be appreciated, but please reply to < jmeehan@easynet.co.uk >, as the return address for this mail is my workplace. [hm... interesting that the minicom port didn't build that symlink by default... you shold prod the maintainer about that.] The big problem here is finding someone (or someone(s)) to actually implement a tool. It's not too rewarding (unless you like hacking GUIs), but if you can actually pull it off you'll be a saint. This is why ral companies like RedHat have tools -- they can _pay_ someone to do it, who will happily do it for money. :) Poke the -current and -hackers mailing lists for ideas... also note that the NeXT netinfo database is part of Apple's Darwin project and may be of interest to you if you want to get radical. (NetInfo is similar to the Windows Registry, but you can use a tool to dump the data to any /etc/ format file. It has built-in net distribtuion, like NIS.) Greetings FreeBSD'ers-

By the way, are the minds at FreeBSD needing any small projects/worthwhile challenges involving non-profit museums in the Bay Area?  Currently at the  California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, we run FreeBSD to support numerous and varied data.  We have had great success with your creation in extending our missions:
(1) CalAcademy's: To explore and explain the natural world and
(2) My personal: a: To benefit the exchange of information
                          b: To set-up the CasKids Virtual Zoo/Virtual Museum "fly-throughs".
c: To collect insects in the field with my dad and "host" our collecting trip as a public floor program in the museum. (whew.. Santa is going to have a tough one)
Any resources that you could provide or point us to would be appreciated.

Why do I care to write this letter?
Our family have all been employed by the Academy and carried its lesson of appreciation for the natural world.  My father is the Collection Manager of Entomology, my mother was in the Botany department here, and I  am the Exhibits Office Manager (Babysitter/ Secretary) as well as a volunteer in our Computer Servces dept.  I am currently learning more about Unix and FreeBSD not only from but also with Ms. Maryjane Murrell, the Academy's only paid Network Administrator on staff.  In fact, she's the only technical person at all in our museum currently that ,maintains everything from security, mail, back-ups, etc....  We would appreciate any free, nearly free support/services/education?...., hell even inspirational tribal dances score points with us. :)

Note: Does your staff feel like letting out any (hopefully positive) aggression on a natural history/planetarium/aquarium museum website?

Thanks for the time and more importantly for providing places like us to save on some major site license money!!!

There isn't enough resources to handle it, sorry. I suggest running traceroutes the the various CVSUP mirrors and find the one closest to you, then schedule the update to run during non-business hours (for the US at least). I know, I had to tell a strange nurse why I wanted to see the doctor - it wasn't one of the most comfortable phone calls :-) So if you are one of the many millions of Americans suffering from ED (erectile dysfunction) or you would just like to try Viagra to see if it will increase intimacy with your mate (it will) - here is an opportunity to order it discretely, privately and inexpensively right over the internet. ------------------------------ Need Viagra? In March 1998, the FDA announced that Viagra® a new drug from Pfizer, Inc., has been approved as treatment for male sexual dysfunction. MedCenter Online & KwikMed, Inc. is able to offer individuals afflicted with sexual dysfunction an evaluation for suitability to Viagra therapy. The evaluation is performed by qualified American physicians in a manner which is simple, secure, and without embarrassment. http://www.smartsurf.net/clients/medicalcenter To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-www" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-www Sun May 30 9: 0:15 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from baerenklau.de.freebsd.org (baerenklau.de.freebsd.org [195.185.195.14]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 68C0514CB9 for ; Sun, 30 May 1999 09:00:12 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from wosch@panke.de.freebsd.org) Received: (from uucp@localhost) by baerenklau.de.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with UUCP id SAA01774 for www@freebsd.org; Sun, 30 May 1999 18:00:12 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from wosch@panke.de.freebsd.org) Received: (from wosch@localhost) by paula.panke.de.freebsd.org (8.9.3/8.8.8) id RAA03695; Sun, 30 May 1999 17:59:33 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from wosch) Message-ID: <19990530175933.22422@panke.de.freebsd.org> Date: Sun, 30 May 1999 17:59:33 +0200 From: Wolfram Schneider To: www@freebsd.org Subject: Blacklisted robots at www.freebsd.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.89i Sender: owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk I'm keeping now a list of unfriendly robots by IP address.
