Well i'm not sure i'm aware enough to explain. Let's try it. IMHO, aligned access means, you may write memory using a (type) pointer, but you need to write at an address that is on a (type-size) boundary. Ie, if ((ptr % sizeof(ptr) != 0)), (miss casts), you're wrong. If you have a struct : s { short int a; long b; } Then a is aligned on a 2 bytes boundary, but (if compiler doesn't help), b may not be. With struct issues, usually when accessing userspace from kernel space, i guess the best way is to prepare locally your structure, and then bcopy() it to user space. I have the same problem with the vfs_aio code, where suword() is used to access int in user space structures. I was wondering how to fix it when you wrote your mail.. Correct, Jensen is not supported in FreeBSD/alpha at this point in time. > Is this machine to old ? That is not the reason, it is more that nobody of the developers has ever dived into Jensen. It is definitely a 'special'piece of hardware that needs quite some specific code support. The NetBSD folks, specifically Jason Thorpe, is working to get Jensen supported in NetBSD. When this succeeds we might see a port of the necessary support code to FreeBSD/alpha sometime. It came out of a thread on -hackers in February 1999 which started with a subject of "vm_page_zero_fill" and morphed into "bcmp() [was Re: vm_page_zero_fill]". I believe this code is about as good as you can get in C - on as AS4100, it is 2-3 times faster than the previous code when compiled with gcc-2.8.1 (using DEC CC gave another 2 times improvement). I posted a pointer to that discussion here on 1st March 1999. Doug Rabson committed the final version of that code to /sys/libkern/bcmp.c. It hasn't been committed to userland, but there's not reason why it couldn't be. The ideas behind my code came from my memory of one of the early technical papers on the Alpha/AXP, which described how to fetch a byte on an architecture without byte fetch instructions. At this point in time, I don't remember the actual paper. Further enhancements on the Alpha should be possible by adding a liberal sprinkling of FETCH instructions (in which case, the asm output from DEC CC would make a good start). Extending this code to the remaining mem* and str* functions is left as an exercise for the reader :-). I have a couple of small relocateable object files that were built on AlphaLinux, for which I do not have the source. The objects make up a library which along with some header files outline the calling convention. I want to be able to link these object files on FreeBSD/Alpha natively without having to use the emulated alphalinux compiler tools. The objects are elf64-alpha, however when I try to link the library (it's an ar archive), I get a screen full of fatal "relocation truncated to fit: REFLONG blah" errors. I've tried extracting the object files and objcopy'ing them (no args), but I get the same errors. Is there some silly difference between elf64-alpha relocateable objects created on AlphaLinux versus FreeBSD?
