These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The report has been examined by a team member and evaluated. f - feedback The problem has been solved, and the originator has been given a patch or a fix has been committed. The PR remains in this state pending a response from the originator. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested. Just to be sure I understand this correctly. . . Do you mean moving things like src/bin/cat.1 to src/share/man/man1/cat.1, or, more likely, src/share/en_US.ISO_8859-1/man/man1/cat.1 ? Or are you just talking about creating new directories under doc/ ? If it's the former, I very strongly doubt you'll get a change of that magnitude past everyone else. I can see the benefits from a translators point of view, but I don't think everyone else will think it is worth the upheavel. I could be wrong. You can import the howto, but I think it needs some updates. It seems that Oracle doesn't work with linux_{base|devtools}-6.1 and that linux_{base|devtools}-5.2 must be used. I have to verify it, but don't really have the time right now. What I'm saying is that the HOWTO itself is a bit out of date. These ports are added to the + collection after the release of FreeBSD 3.2. If you are using + FreeBSD 3.2 or an older version for that matter, update your + ports collection. You may want to consider updating your FreeBSD + version too. If you run into difficulties with linux_base-6.1 or + linux_devtools-6.1 you may have to use version 5.2 of these + packages. + + If you want to run the intelligent agent, you'll + also need to install the Red Hat tcl package: + tcl-8.0.3-20.i386.rpm. The general command + for installing packages with the official RPM port is : + + &prompt.root; rpm -i --ignoreos --root /compat/linux --dbpath /var/lib/rpm package + + Installation of the package should not generate any + errors. + + + + Creating the Oracle environment + Before you can install Oracle, you need to set up a proper + environment. This document only describes what to do + *specially* to run Oracle for Linux on FreeBSD, not what has + been described in the Oracle installation guide. + + + Kernel Tuning + As described in the Oracle installation guide, you need + to set the maximum size of shared memory. Don't use SHMMAX + under FreeBSD. SHMMAX is merely calculated out of SHMMAXPGS + and PGSIZE. Therefore define SHMMAXPGS. All other options can + be used as described in the guide. For example: + + +options SHMMAXPGS=10000 +options SHMMNI=100 +options SHMSEG=10 +options SEMMNS=200 +options SEMMNI=70 +options SEMMSL=61 + + Set these options to suit your intended use of + Oracle. + + Also, make sure you have the following options in your + kernel config-file: + + +options SYSVSHM #SysV shared memory +options SYSVSEM #SysV semaphores +options SYSVMSG #SysV interprocess communication + + + + + Oracle account Create an Oracle account + just as you would create any other account. The Oracle account + is special only that you need to give it a Linux shell. Add + /compat/linux/bin/bash to + /etc/shells and set the shell for the + Oracle account to + /compat/linux/bin/bash. + + + + + Environment + Besides the normal Oracle variables, such as ORACLE_HOME + and ORACLE_SID you must set the following environment + variables: + + +LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib +CLASSPATH=$ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib/classes111.zip +PATH=/compat/linux/bin:/compat/linux/sbin:/compat/linux/usr/bin:/compat/linux/usr/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:$ORACLE_HOME/bin + + + It is advised to set all the environment variables in + .profile. A complete example is: + +ORACLE_BASE=/oracle; export ORACLE_BASE +ORACLE_HOME=/oracle; export ORACLE_HOME +LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib +export LD_LIBRARY_PATH +ORACLE_SID=ORCL; export ORACLE_SID +ORACLE_TERM=386x; export ORACLE_TERM +CLASSPATH=$ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib/classes111.zip +export CLASSPATH +PATH=/compat/linux/bin:/compat/linux/sbin:/compat/linux/usr/bin:/compat/linux/usr/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:$ORACLE_HOME/bin +export PATH + + + + + + Installing Oracle + + Due to a slight inconsistency in the Linux emulator, you + need to create a directory named .oracle in + /var/tmp before you start the + installer. Either make it world writable or let it be owner by + the oracle user. You should be able to install Oracle without + any problems. If you have problems, check your Oracle + distribution and/or configuration first! After you have + installed Oracle, apply the patches described in the next two + subsections. + + A frequent problem is that the TCP protocol + adapter is not installed right. As a consequence, you cannot + start any TCP listeners. The following actions help solve this + problem: + + + &prompt.root; cd $ORACLE_HOME/network/lib + &prompt.root; make -f ins_network.mk ntcontab.o + &prompt.root; cd $ORACLE_HOME/lib + &prompt.root; ar r libnetwork.a ntcontab.o + &prompt.root; cd $ORACLE_HOME/network/lib + &prompt.root; make -f ins_network.mk install + + + Don't forget to run root.sh + again! + + + Patching root.sh + + When installing Oracle, some actions, which need to be +performed as root, are recorded in a shell script called +root.sh. root.sh is written in the orainst directory. Yes, maybe it's harder for coders to change *.{c|h} files in one directory and man pages in another, but who knows? If we have strong agreement, that DocProj is little different from SrcProj ;) and man pages belong to DocProj, then it's good way for creating language-specific manpages-${LANG} parts of distribution. But.. I guess not this time, so little translators, so many docs.. ;) > If you mean the latter, we already do something like that with the Japanese > manual pages. If you don't mind, the stable branch probably have the biggest installed user base, so would get the most benefit. As I said, I can definitely see the point in branching the doc//man tree, but only if there are sufficient translators to make it worthwhile. > If we have strong agreement, that DocProj is little different from > SrcProj ;) and man pages belong to DocProj, then it's good way for creating > language-specific manpages-${LANG} parts of distribution. But.. I guess > not this time, so little translators, so many docs.. ;) Yes. I'm also not convinced that the manual pages 'belong' to the DocProj. There's no real historical justification for it, and the manual pages are tied much more closely to the commands than the FAQ or the Handbook are, for example. I realize that the handbook freeze is in progress. While rewriting the "FreeBSD Internals" chapter in the handbook, I came across the information on memory control and DMA handling. The memory control part is extremely outdated and should be completely rewritten (work in progress). The DMA handling section, in my humble opinion, is not relevant to "FreeBSD Internals", nor is it relevant to FreeBSD. It deals with the i386 architecture and general DMA information. The VM section by Mr. Dillon is very good, and I wonder if we can also merge Mr. Dillon's DaemonNews article on VM into it. If Mr. Dillon should agree, I will rewrite them so that the two becomes one coherent section. Here is my proposal: 1. Remove the memory access section and rewrite it. Hopefully, Mr. Wunsch or some other willing and able person will write it/send it to me. And I will rewrite the article into a form that is easier to read. 2. If Mr. Lemis agrees, I will write a section on vinum to be inserted into either handbook/Disks or handbook/Internals. 3. If Mr. Dillon agrees, a rewrite of the VM section will pop from me sometime next week (possibly this weekend). 4. Complete removal of the DMA section in handbook/internals It is a discussion on DMA, not FreeBSD :) 5. IPV6 section reorganization from yours truly :P [By the way, it is an excellent doc already. :)] 6. Move the old section on memory access plus the DMA section to somewhere accessible to programmers. i.e. "man dma", into a PDF/PS document, or some other proposal Response for 1-4 and 6 would be appreciated, Thank you -- keichii@bsdconspiracy.net Wide Spread BSD Conspiracy to take over the world OS market To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Thu Mar 30 8:54: 7 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from apollo.backplane.com (apollo.backplane.com [216.240.41.2]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4247437BCB2; Thu, 30 Mar 2000 08:54:04 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from dillon@apollo.backplane.com) Received: (from dillon@localhost) by apollo.backplane.com (8.9.3/8.9.1) id IAA73415; Thu, 30 Mar 2000 08:53:59 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from dillon) Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 08:53:59 -0800 (PST) From: Matthew Dillon Message-Id: <200003301653.IAA73415@apollo.backplane.com> To: Michael Chin-yuan Wu Cc: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org, groggy@lemis.com, joerg@freebsd.org Subject: Re: "FreeBSD Internals" chapter in handbook References: Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org :The VM section by Mr. Dillon is very good, and I wonder if :we can also merge Mr. Dillon's DaemonNews article on VM into it. :If Mr. Dillon should agree, I will rewrite them so that :the two becomes one coherent section. And I will rewrite > the article into a form that is easier to read. My part was merely an explanation how the old bootstrap was loading. Yes, it's completely outdated now and should be dropped. Unfortunately, i don't have the slightest clues how the current boot loader is working (except that i know it loads a Forth interpreter as its third stage), perhaps the initial two stages still work the same way and only their source code has been restructured, perhaps they work entirely differently. I see the names of Mike Smith and Marcel Moolenaar quite often in the initial commits of the new bootstrap code, perhaps one of them could volunteer to contribute for a rewrite of that part. Speaking of boot code: i've already seen it in Usenet a number of times, and had to help out a colleague today with his new computer, a lot of newer machines seem to fail the assumption that the BIOS sets the `enhanced keyboad' flags, thus they continue to boot on the serial console... This is not integrated with the build process in any way yet. You will need: cvs2cl.pl Get this from http://www.red-bean.com/~kfogel/cvs2cl.shtml. You need version 2.3 or above, which supports the --xml output flag. We'll need to port this if we use this approach. jade textproc/jade, you'll have this if you installed the textproc/docproj port XML declaration The XML declaration. I use the one from the textproc/dsssl-docbook-modular port. webchanges-new.sgml Attached to this message. cl.sh Quick and dirty shell script. Attached to this message. changelog.dsl DSSSL script to convert from the ChangeLog XML to HTML. Attached to this message. 1. Check out a copy of the www/ repository somewhere, and go to the www/en directory. 2. Run "cvs2cl.pl", getting the last month's worth of changes. Put the results in news/ChangeLog.xml. Something like this should do it. cvs2cl.pl -g '-d /home/ncvs' -l "-d'>2000-03-01'" -r -P \ --xml --stdout > news/ChangeLog.xml 3. Change to the news/ directory, and put a copy of the attached webchanges-new.sgml file in there. 4. Run jade over ChangeLog.xml, using changelog.dsl, to generate changelog.html. See the commands in cl.sh for how to do this. Note the two calls to sed, which are required to make up for some deficiencies in my DSSSL knowledge. 5. Patch news/Makefile to know about webchanges-new.sgml, and then make webchanges-new.html 6. Examine the HTML output in your browser of choice. There are a few nits. 1. Multiple changes by different people on the same day get a different entry. This really needs a patch to cvs2cl.pl to fix, so that you have ... ... Rather than the current approach. 2. We're ignoring some information in the ChangeLog. For example the time of the commit, and the file revisions affected. We could use this info to link back to the CVS repository. 3. The sed in the shell script is ugly, but I don't know enough DSSSL to do that in the stylesheet. For those that don't to do all the above, I've attached a copy of a webchanges-new.html ("Here's one I made earlier") so you can see the direction we're going in. You can see it at : http://www.gufi.org/~gmarco/ports/ Now I think I can simplify a lot it by using this module :-) What about to add functions like : isinstalled(), versioninstalled(), daysmodified() and so on ? In the mean time I'll download the version 0.02 If you want to give a look at my code (badly written indeed :-) you can download at: http://www.gufi.org/~gmarco/ports.tgz It has some bugs in parsing macro-names but it works quite fine :-) Thanks for attention.
