There are also a 3C905 and a non-PnP modem on the ISA bus, both of which are working correctly. Just before you might ask: I disabled the COM ports, so IRQ3 is free; besides I also tried other settings. Bye & Thanks av. Just because the driver says it's at irq 3 doesn't necessarily mean that it is. The driver takes _your_ word for it. The way the card is timing out supports my hypothesis, I think. I don't know where you got this from. The normal "rules" are up to 150m total length, with up to 8 taps along the way, with a maximum tap length of 1m, or alternatively up to 800m with no taps. > The topology of my house makes it difficult to follow these rules, if > I want phones in differerent rooms.. Unless you have a very large house, you should be able to make things fit. Note that these "rules" - like all cabling rules - are designed to simplify the problem, so that any installation obeying the rules is guaranteed to work. In reality, there is a trade-off between the total length, number of taps/T-junctions, length of taps, accuracy of termination etc. Many combinations not permitted by the rules will also work, though it is hard to guarantee this in advance. > > Therefore I could use an "isdn-hub". Does such a beast exist? I have never seen one. It would be nearly as hard to make one as it would be to build a simple PBX, and the PBX would be much more useful, so I suspect noone has bothered. > > Or should I rather get a PABC? This depends what you want to do, and how much you pay for the equipment. In the UK, ISDN phones are hard to find, and PBX with additional S-bus ports are much more expensive than ones with just analogue telephone ports. Hence the best combination for me is an analogue PBX for phones, wired in parallel on the S-bus with the PCs running i4b. You can still configure the system, for example, so that an analogue phone rings (via the PBX) on a particular MSN number, but the i4b answerphone answers it if you have not picked up the phone after a while. If ISDN phones are cheaper where you are, the best option may be different. > Can i4b work as a PABC, i.e. can I put more isdn-adapters in, and > connect a phone to each isdn-adapter? No, the S-bus is not symmetric: connecting an ISDN phone to an adapter in a PC would fundamentally not work at the hardware level, never mind the software issues. Uhm, I don't know the FreeBSD PnP subsystem, but on NetBSD this is not the case (this is a Plug and Play card!) - so the card will be using any interrupt the PnP subsystem assigns to the driver. BUT: assigning IRQ 3 looks wrong. Has your PC got on-board com ports? They pretty sure have IRQ 3 and 4 reserved for them. Using such interrupts from bus cards simply does not work on most mainboards. You need to get the PnP config to assign a different IRQ here (but I don't know how you would do that with FreeBSD). X-Mailer: VM 6.75 under Emacs 20.3.1 From: jan@sparud.net (Jan Sparud) Sender: owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi there! Last week I suddenly got caught by the infamous LCP loop bug. It appeared all of a sudden; I hadn't done any changes, nor had the ISP at work. After figuring out that I had the same problem as some others have had, I applied the patch that Marc van Woerkom posted to the list (subject: "Infinite loop (sppp/lcp)"). After that, I can connect alright, but it takes about ten seconds instead of the normal 1-2 seconds. Since I am about to install i4b on some ten boxes for colleagues at work, I'd thought it would be nice to kill this bug. I want BSD (I use NetBSD) to look as good as possible, and this ten second connect delay is then hard to explain. I use NetBSD-current (i386) and i4b-0.90. The ISDN card I'm using is the AVM Fritz! PCI card. Now to the problem. Below are transcripts from /var/log/messages (produced by the isp0 device after setting the debug flag), from isdntrace (on the same connection attempt), and from tcpdump* (from another connection attempt). *I have modified the print-ppp.c in the sppp directory to work with the NetBSD tcpdump. I can send patches if anyone is interested. From what I can see in the i4b manual and in RFC 1661, the following thing should happen in the LCP phase: 1 TE->NT: Config-Request id=x 2 NT->TE: Config-Request id=y 3 TE->NT: Config-Ack id=y (with the same contents as in the req) 4 NT->TE: Config-Ack id=x Whats happening in my case is: 1 TE->NT: Config-Request id=x 2 NT->TE: Config-Request id=y 3 TE->NT: Config-Ack id=y (with the same contents as in the req) 4 NT->TE: Config-Request id=y+1 5 TE->NT: Config-Ack id=y+1 (with the same contents as in the req) 6 NT->TE: Config-Request id=y+2 7 TE->NT: Config-Ack id=y+2 (with the same contents as in the req) 8 NT->TE: Config-Request id=y+3 9 TE->NT: Config-Ack id=y+3 (with the same contents as in the req) ... My understanding about what is happening is the following (please correct me if I'm wrong): The conf-req from the NT (line 2) arrives around two seconds after the initial request from the TE. The TE replies immedetiately, accepting the request. But the NT then waits another two seconds, before sending the same request again (with an increased ID number). This process is repeated ad infinitum. Since the TE never gets the conf-ack for the initial request (on line 1), it cannot change state to Opened. What the patch by Marc van Woerkom does, is to pretend that an conf-ack has been received, as soon as the TE's conf-ack has been sent, thus forcing the state to Opened. This seems to work. So, can any of you reading the list shed any light on what is happening when the loop occurs? I really want to fix this problem. From what I understand, none of the developers have experienced this problem, and that's why it hasn't been fixed. I'll try to fix the problem myself, but it would be good if some of you ISDN experts could have a look at the logs below, to see if something obvious is wrong. The problem is completely reproducible here, so if other information is needed, please ask. Well, the card is unfortunately PnP, so I don't actually tell the driver where to look for it; rather I tell the kernel to instruct the card to use those settings (I tried other ones too), then the driver finds the card there. I really have no other choice that I know of, since I don't have a PnP BIOS on this machine. I'm open to suggestion though :-) The card by default start disabled, so I HAVE TO tell it which address and IRQ to use. Bye & Thanks av. Just some remarks: - i don't use PPP in any of my i4b setups (yet), i only use it for testing this and that. In my test setups, i cannot reproduce this bug. - i have no idea when this occurs or what might be the cause. - the ISDN parts of i4b seem to have nothing to do with this bug, it seems to be a failure inside either i4b_isppp.c or if_spppsubr.c or both. IMHO, what you are trying to do is the only way to solve this problem, as someone who is _able_ to reproduce the problem should become a PPP expert, understand why what is happening and then fix the problem in the best possible way. hellmuth -- Hellmuth Michaelis Tel +49 40 559747-70 HCS Hanseatischer Computerservice GmbH Fax +49 40 559747-77 Oldesloer Strasse 97-99 Mail hm [at] hcs.de 22457 Hamburg WWW http://www.hcs.de To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Wed Jan 5 0: 5: 0 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Received: from mail-in-01.piro.net (mail-out-02.piro.net [194.64.31.10]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C029514BD8 for ; Wed, 5 Jan 2000 00:04:53 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from pherman@piro.net) Received: from pums01.piro.net (pums01.piro.net [194.64.31.19]) by mail-in-01.piro.net (8.9.3/8.9.3/PN-991208) with ESMTP id JAA25757 for ; Wed, 5 Jan 2000 09:04:46 +0100 Received: from xhost.piro.net ([195.135.190.64]) by pums01.piro.net (Netscape Messaging Server 3.6) with ESMTP id AAA5979; Wed, 5 Jan 2000 09:04:44 +0100 Date: Wed, 5 Jan 2000 09:04:44 +0100 (CET) From: Paul Herman To: Jan Sparud Cc: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Sigh, I'm caught by the LCP loop bug... First of all, welcome to the club! :) Although Marc's patch might work, I wouldn't use it on production boxes (like for the ten colleagues you mentioned), because this breaks all PPP state machines -- not just LCP, but IPCP as well. This needs to be fixed. (As far as I know, there is no PR for this.) After I get my FreeBSD system at home going again (at most a month), I plan to attack this. If you are interested in looking through some code (mostly comparing -stable with 0.71) send me an email and we can get something coordinated (divide and conquer!) I'm using that here at home and it works flawlessly. Example: server ntp2.fau.de minpoll 14 maxpoll 16 Poll the server at least all 2^14 seconds, and at maximum all 2^16 seconds. Additionally, buying one of the DCF77 receivers from Conrad (25 Euro) might be an option in Germany. I'm currently writing a FreeBSD driver for this beast which will also work together with ntpd. -- Regards, Sascha Schumann Consultant To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Thu Jan 6 0: 7:23 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Received: from nets5.rz.rwth-aachen.de (nets5.rz.RWTH-Aachen.DE [137.226.144.13]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 98EC5155A7 for ; Thu, 6 Jan 2000 00:07:19 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from kuku@gilberto.physik.RWTH-Aachen.DE) Received: from campino.informatik.rwth-aachen.de (campino.Informatik.RWTH-Aachen.DE [137.226.116.240]) by nets5.rz.rwth-aachen.de (8.9.1a/8.9.1/10) with ESMTP id JAA04404; Thu, 6 Jan 2000 09:07:15 +0100 (MET) Received: from gil.physik.rwth-aachen.de (gilberto.physik.rwth-aachen.de [137.226.30.2]) by campino.informatik.rwth-aachen.de (8.9.1a/8.9.1/3) with ESMTP id JAA22262; Thu, 6 Jan 2000 09:07:20 +0100 (MET) Received: (from kuku@localhost) by gil.physik.rwth-aachen.de (8.9.3/8.6.9) id JAA58789; Thu, 6 Jan 2000 09:07:16 +0100 (CET) Date: Thu, 6 Jan 2000 09:07:16 +0100 From: Christoph Kukulies To: Oren Sarig Cc: Christoph Kukulies , freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: isp0 - File exists, routes? This isn't surprising, because the same mechanism is used in both phases, but it might indeed be something else. The LCP Loop bug also depends on the provider. It may even depend on the Cisco IOS version of the terminal server, but that theory hasn't yet been tested thoroughly. The LCP bug is being worked on, and if you are interested in testing the bug fixes when we have them, just let me know. The LCP bugfix, when it comes, may or may not solve your problem. -Paul. ---------------------------------------------------- PIRONET AG Paul Herman - Consultant - SBU Providing Im Mediapark 5 - 50670 Cologne - Germany Tel.: +49 (0)221 454 3832 - Fax: +49 (0)221 454 3810 mailto:pherman@piro.net - http://www.piro.net/ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Thu Jan 6 3:35:10 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Received: from nets5.rz.rwth-aachen.de (nets5.rz.RWTH-Aachen.DE [137.226.144.13]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A4D6A14A05 for ; Thu, 6 Jan 2000 03:35:05 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from kuku@gilberto.physik.RWTH-Aachen.DE) Received: from campino.informatik.rwth-aachen.de (campino.Informatik.RWTH-Aachen.DE [137.226.116.240]) by nets5.rz.rwth-aachen.de (8.9.1a/8.9.1/10) with ESMTP id MAA02513 for ; Thu, 6 Jan 2000 12:35:04 +0100 (MET) Received: from gil.physik.rwth-aachen.de (gilberto.physik.rwth-aachen.de [137.226.30.2]) by campino.informatik.rwth-aachen.de (8.9.1a/8.9.1/3) with ESMTP id MAA26333 for ; Thu, 6 Jan 2000 12:35:09 +0100 (MET) Received: (from kuku@localhost) by gil.physik.rwth-aachen.de (8.9.3/8.6.9) id MAA59743 for freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org; Thu, 6 Jan 2000 12:35:07 +0100 (CET) Date: Thu, 6 Jan 2000 12:35:07 +0100 (CET) From: Christoph Kukulies Message-Id: <200001061135.MAA59743@gil.physik.rwth-aachen.de> To: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Subject: i4bisppp rtinit DEL failed Sender: owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I'm getting further with i4bisppp. Got over the authentication phase and with private help from Gary Jennejohn and FAQ reading I got to a point where the initial handshake seems to be ok but something seems to go wrong in the sppp layer: Jan 6 12:29:50 isdn-kukulies /kernel: isp0: ipcp output Jan 6 12:29:50 isdn-kukulies /kernel: isp0: ipcp input(ack-sent): Jan 6 12:29:50 isdn-kukulies /kernel: isp0: ipcp tlu Jan 6 12:30:04 isdn-kukulies /kernel: isp0: lcp close(opened) Jan 6 12:30:04 isdn-kukulies /kernel: isp0: phase terminate Jan 6 12:30:04 isdn-kukulies /kernel: isp0: ipcp down(opened) Jan 6 12:30:04 isdn-kukulies /kernel: isp0: ipcp close(starting) Jan 6 12:30:04 isdn-kukulies /kernel: isp0: sppp_set_ip_addr: rtinit DEL failed , error=3 Jan 6 12:30:04 isdn-kukulies /kernel: isp0: lcp output Jan 6 12:30:04 isdn-kukulies /kernel: isp0: lcp input(closing): Any clues? -- Chris Christoph P. I'm connecting to an Ascend Max 1800 and the firmware shouldn't differ to much - I am using isp0 (former isppp0) from the beginning, and this was somewhere at 2.2.6-R :-) The configuration was even more simply as I use caller ID identification: compared to PPP authentification (PAP, as you do), this was a little bit faster, especially, when the authorization on the Maxens side was done over RADIUS. So if you can change your dialup profile on the Max, it's once more less complicated :-) (I was trying raw IP with the Max in the beginning, and it was Jörg Wunsch who asked why I am thinking that i4b's raw IP should be compatible to Ascend's raw IP... As long as you use this IP address for outgoing connections (ssh, telnet, ...) you're stuck when the connection times out: you can't tell either side that you're address has changed. Of course, your machine should notice it, but what do you expect for the other side? It would be real security problem if you really try to tell some telnet session that the IP address of one side has changed :-) OTOH, if you have some address range routed from your machine to somewhere behind the MAX (like an internal overlay network based on 192.168.*) you could try to open outgoing connections with these addresses and do dynamic routing (based on some routing protocol), but this depends on what you are really going to do. BTW, you told us you have an Ascend MAX on the other side. Does this one have some address pool for assigning dynamic addresses (I would expect so)? You could increase the starting address of this pool once and use the now more or less unused first IP address as a static one for your machine, this will cause much less pain. In my case, when I'm using some Internet-by-call provider, I have to run something during the session that holds it open, like a ping to some host in the provider's network so that neither one side of the connection ever closes due to timeout. The "true loss of quality" comes from using dynamic IP addresses, not the change from ipr0 to isp0. Many people use fixed IP addresses with PPP. Ascend MAX units are certainly capable of doing it (I think this is what you said you were connecting to). > If I'm not totally off target it must have to do with the > fact that the sockets that are open on both ends still have > the old IP address associated with them. Exactly so. > Would be a technical solution to 'patch/ioctl' the old sockets with > the new IP address? Not really. Something like "natd" could fudge up the 'local' end of the connection (ie. the addresses on packets coming out of the machine with the ISDN interface), but this still wouldn't work since the remote machine has no way of knowing when the ISDN machine's address has changed. However, if you can't get a static address assignment, there are some more complex solutions to your problem. If you have full control over both machines, you can use an IP tunnel ("both machines" means the machine doing the ISDN dialup, and the machine(s) that your xterm sessions connect to, or at least some machine permanently attached to the Internet). The way this works is that you create a tunnel interface in each of the two machines, and assign it a fixed IP address. If you are only interested in these two machines, you can assign RFC 1918 addresses, so you might have: On your 'home' machine: ifconfig tun0 10.1.1.1 10.1.1.2 On the server that you want to connect into: ifconfig tun0 10.1.1.2 10.1.1.1 You then run some sort of tunnel daemon to connect these two interfaces together. When you want to connect to the server machine (eg. with telnet), instead of using its 'normal' hostname/IP address, you telnet to 10.1.1.2. Similarly, for your xterms you set DISPLAY to 10.1.1.1:0.0. All the applications are now using fixed addresses, and so will not notice when the IP address of the ISDN interface changes. The tunnel daemon _will_ notice, but you can restart that each time the ISDN link comes up (if necessary), and the applications using the tunnel will not notice. There are various options for building the tunnel itself. One popular option is to use /usr/sbin/ppp in conjunction with SSH, which gives you security as well as the basic tunnel. A snag with this is that SSH uses a TCP connection, which will therefore need to be restarted each time the link comes up (you could get isdnd to do this, but it gets complicated). /usr/sbin/ppp also supports tunneling over UDP, but I think this requires fixed IP addresses (and would be rather insecure without) so doesn't fix the problem. ports/net/tund may be worth a look: it apparently does IP over UDP with security, but may need hacking to cope with changing addresses (I haven't used it). [Confusion alert: I am *NOT* talking here about using /usr/sbin/ppp in conjunction with i4b's rbch as an alternative to isp0: - if you were doing that, you would have *TWO* copies of usr/sbin/ppp running, one to build the basic ppp connection, and another to build the tunnel. The tunnel involves placing your 'useful' IP traffic inside a PPP wrapping, then placing that PPP in an IP wrapping, and when those packets go across the ISDN interface there is another layer of PPP on the outside!]. Alternatively, you could write a simple tunnel daemon yourself - I estimate that this would only be about 200 lines of code if you don't care too much about security. The tun0: devices are extremely easy to use - I haven't written exactly the program you need, but to give you an idea of how easy it is, I recently wrote an IP-over-ATM-over-IP daemon which came out at 728 lines, including a bunch of features unconnected to the IP tunneling.
