PCI card? Since I put the card into the system and enabled i4b I am seeing random crashes. The card also wedges from time to time during transmit; only closing the connection using user-mode ppp and bringing it up again unwedges the card. So far, any odd behaviour occured only while the ISDN connection was up and user-mode ppp was talking to the box on the remote end. System behaves normally when the ISDN subsystem is not in use. I have currently booted to a non-SMP kernel on the box and it is stable so far. Some more info about the system: Tandem S110 2 x Tyan S1568 mainboard, one running FreeBSD 4.1-stable (contains the card), the other one currently disabled. Running 2x200 Mhz Pentium Pro, not overclocked, ECC RAM. Also in the system are 1 Matrox Millenium, one Asus NCR875-based SCSI controller and on 8-bit parallel port ISA card. One ATAPI CDROM, one floppy. ISDN card BT Speedway ISDN, aka AVM Fritz! PCI Running 4.1-stable as of Friday, rebuilt today. Using i4b as it comes with the system (i.e. no updated to 0.95) Unfortunately I did not have any crash dumps (or kernel symbols) enabled when the box crashed so I don't have any usuable backtrace. The function name of the function that was listed as being the one it crashed in indicated that the crash occured somewhere in the SMP subsystem. I will try to reproduce the crash during the next couple of days but the system is 'production' at the moment so I cannot reboot it at will. I can't imagine it will run flawlessly - from my limited understanding of the SMP issues and without having special i4b code locations in mind - on an SMP system. On closer inspection I am not sure that it really is an SMP issue. Actually it went bang with a non-SMP kernel on the same system. Unfortunately the SMP system is the only one I have to run i4b on so it looks like I am in for some digging. By now I have a crash dump with back trace - I will send it in a separate email to the list. > Noone doing regular i4b development has access to an SMP system. Well, I have an SMP system and an ISDN line. I'm also a half-decent developer. If someone can give me some info where to start on i4b then I could try to help out. > Before you start digging into the source, i'm about to commit 0.95 to > -current asap. Unfortunately the system in question is running -stable and with the well-documented instability on -current thanks to SMPng I can't update it at the moment. If 0.95 applies cleanly to a current -stable I will try and see if I can still reproduce the problem. Anyway, the non-SMP kernel went bang the same fashion the SMP one did, it only took longer. So I went back to the SMP kernel with debug info. Which means that I now have a stack trace (see below). What happened is fairly obvious - the ISDN card's interrupt handler got a bad sc pointer, tried to dereference it and the whole system didn't like it. Of course the interesting bit is to find out why... I'll keep the dump around for some time in case someone wants a specific view of it but I'd rather not upload it to a publicly accessible place. Ok, it wouldn't call it regular ;) Btw: it seems that the problems I seemed to have with SMP were related to a shared irq that shouldn't have been shared. --gt To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Sun Sep 24 10:54:59 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Received: from peedub.muc.de (peedub.muc.de [193.149.49.109]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F3CCB37B422 for ; Sun, 24 Sep 2000 10:54:56 -0700 (PDT) Received: from peedub.muc.de (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by peedub.muc.de (8.11.0/8.6.9) with ESMTP id e8OHsFO52900; Sun, 24 Sep 2000 19:54:15 +0200 (CEST) Message-Id: <200009241754.e8OHsFO52900@peedub.muc.de> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.1.1 10/15/1999 To: Timo Geusch Cc: freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Are there any known issues with SMP, 4.1-stable and i4b? As a guideline I am using the i4b-t-error.html. I have written /etc/isdn/isdnd.rc and started isdnd, then configured isp0 via ifconfig in /etc/rc.conf and at last started spppcontrol in /etc/rc.conf.local. The kernel is setting up he isdn-devices correctly, as far as I can see. But when starting spppcontrol I get a: SIOCIFGENERIC(SPPPIOSDEFS): Device busy. "spppcontrol isp0" then says only isp0: phase-establish and so on. So what did I mess up? Every help is appreciated, for I could not find anything related in documentation. There is no spppcontrol in the current version of I4B, so if you just happened to update from something earlier, you'll be using the wrong (old) spppcontrol instead of the new ispppcontrol. This would just not work (TM). If you are using an older version (a) you should update and (b) make sure your isp interface is not trying to do a connection before you've set it up correctly with (in that case) spppcontrol. I usualy start isdnd after the initial (i)spppcontrol is run and ifconfig up the interface when the isdnd daemon is running. More general hints: do ifconfig isp0 debug to get more debug output loged to syslog. This should provide you with enough information to discover other errors. The other source is three or four PC parts shops, where you can buy all sorts of computer hardware, mainboards, cases, cards, chips, everything you need to build PC's and networks. hellmuth -- Hellmuth Michaelis Tel +49 40 55 97 47-70 HCS Hanseatischer Computerservice GmbH Fax +49 40 55 97 47-77 Oldesloer Strasse 97-99 Mail hm [at] hcs.de D-22457 Hamburg WWW http://www.hcs.de To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Mon Sep 25 3:17:50 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Received: from onizuka.vmunix.org (onizuka.vmunix.org [194.221.152.19]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 968D637B424 for ; Mon, 25 Sep 2000 03:17:48 -0700 (PDT) Received: from localhost (821 bytes) by onizuka.vmunix.org via sendmail with stdio (sender: ) (ident using unix) id for ; Mon, 25 Sep 2000 12:17:50 +0200 (CEST) Message-Id: Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 12:17:50 +0200 (CEST) From: torstenb@vmunix.org (Torsten Blum) To: hm@hcs.de Cc: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Are there any known issues with SMP, 4.1-stable and i4b? This would just not work (TM). Thanks a lot for Your reply. I used 4.1-RELEASE and i4b exactly as it came with it. Now I downloaded i4b-0.95 and installed everything with overuninstall.sh and overinstall.sh. It seems however I am deeper in the sh.. than ever. Ispppcontrol as always tells about phase: establish, but isdnd exits with the error ERR_init_controller : no controller found! The kernel-modules seem to be all present. My controller is a AVM A1-PCI, which works fine with Linux and Windows. Ifconfig shows 4 isp-devices and is setting them up, as is required. Isdndebug -c gives a kernel panic with a "page not present". /var/log/messages has nothing useful, and the isdn-log is still empty. Maybe some device or so did not get updated? isdnd is new and so are the other tools but some may be still the old ones, only freshly compiled.. I have changed the setup between ifconfig, ispppcontrol and isdnd several times (setup, etups, tupse, upset), nothing helps. Thanks for any help! I have not seen a kernel panic when starting isdnd for a long time now, either your configuration file triggers a bad bug or you've messed up your source tree quite a bit. > Here's the questions : > > 1) There is a way to use the pppd (with chat or any other program) > without setupping the ISDND daemon ? I really tried to explain what is happening there, i even draw those little pictures in long nights! If i were you, at the very first i would setup a _minimal_ isdnd.rc from the examples to make a telephone answering system work. This is the simplest possible setup. You should be able to call with an ordinary phone and hear the messages. If you get panics or so, the only thing i can recommend is to get your source tree right or reinstall the whole OS from scratch. At the point the answering machine is running, you should have gotten the picture and then it is time to extend the isdnd.rc configuration step by step. hellmuth -- Hellmuth Michaelis Tel +49 40 55 97 47-70 HCS Hanseatischer Computerservice GmbH Fax +49 40 55 97 47-77 Oldesloer Strasse 97-99 Mail hm [at] hcs.de D-22457 Hamburg WWW http://www.hcs.de To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Fri Sep 29 0:46: 3 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Received: from hyperbate.francenet.fr (hyperbate.francenet.fr [193.149.97.80]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3611B37B422 for ; Fri, 29 Sep 2000 00:45:48 -0700 (PDT) Received: from notbsdems.nantes.kisoft-services.com (pppA222.francenet.fr [193.149.100.132]) by hyperbate.francenet.fr (8.10.1/8.10.1) with ESMTP id e8T7jin13110; Fri, 29 Sep 2000 09:45:45 +0200 (MET DST) Received: by notbsdems.nantes.kisoft-services.com (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 64B71E6B3F; Fri, 29 Sep 2000 09:44:19 +0200 (CEST) To: diego damo Cc: freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Excuses and help for internal US Robotics Sportster. I switched back to the i4b that came with 4.1-RELEASE and suddenly everything worked. Seems to be a problem with the correct order of sppp, isdnd, ifconfig and route. The problem with i4b-00.95.00 remains to solve. Somehow the versions get mixed up, when I use overinstall.sh. I shall try to dig a little more into that, once I have the time ;-) Thanks a lot for every help! You have to replace spppconfig to ispppconfig in the rc file where it is used. I recommend staying away from using rc.conf and using a shell script for i4b 0.95 since 0.95 is different form the i4b version for which the rc files were written. hellmuth -- Hellmuth Michaelis Tel +49 40 55 97 47-70 HCS Hanseatischer Computerservice GmbH Fax +49 40 55 97 47-77 Oldesloer Strasse 97-99 Mail hm [at] hcs.de D-22457 Hamburg WWW http://www.hcs.de To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Sat Sep 30 11:45:16 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Received: from golf.dax.net (golf.dax.net [193.216.69.103]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 91B7137B503 for ; Sat, 30 Sep 2000 11:45:13 -0700 (PDT) Received: from tng (mp-217-212-2.daxnet.no [193.217.212.2]) by golf.dax.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id UAA01218; Sat, 30 Sep 2000 20:44:33 +0200 (MET DST) Message-Id: <200009301844.UAA01218@golf.dax.net> From: "Eirik Apeland" To: "Marc Veldman" Cc: "freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG" Date: Sat, 30 Sep 2000 20:46:34 +0100 Reply-To: "Eirik Apeland" X-Mailer: PMMail 98 Standard (2.00.1500) For Windows NT (4.0.1381;5) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: Re: Setting up sppp Sender: owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Sat, 30 Sep 2000 18:50:26 +0200 (CEST), Marc Veldman wrote: > >I don't have your original mail here at this machine, >but did you put in static routes to your home network ? > >/etc/rc.conf: >static_routes="home" >route_home="10.0.0.0/24 10.0.0.10" No, but I have now :) What does these lines do? I've had quite a hard time figuring it out, but I've gotten good help from all the people on freebsd-isdn, freebsd-questions etc.. The lines set a route from your freebsd machine to your network on the right-hand side of this diagram. [The following text is a great simplification of the actual procedure. All improvements are more than welcome] Internet---->isp interface | FreeBSD machine | ---->Your Network (10.0.0.0/24) If you try to, say, get a web page from a machine on Your Network, a request goes out from that machine. (Let's say you want to look at www.cnn.com from a machine on Your Network) First of all the requesting machine (the machine on Your Network) will try to look up the IP address of www.cnn.com. If you set the DNS-server address on the requesting machine to the address of the DNS server of your ISP, then a request will go out from the requesting machine to the DNS server. Since the DNS server is not on Your Network, the FreeBSD machine will send out the request over the isp0 interface. After some (short) time it will get a response from the ISP's DNS server to your machine. The FreeBSD machine gets this response and it needs to know which network interface it has to use to forward the response to the request to. With the "home" lines in the example, your FreeBSD machine, the FBSD machine knows over which interface it has to forward the response. I have attached a (part) of my rc.conf as an example. Below is my home setup. Internet ---> isp0 | My machine | ---> fxp0 ---> 172.16.7.0/24 network | | ---> ex0 ---> 172.16.8.0/24 network > >Some more questions: > >Does your machine dial out if you ping from > >your NT machine ? > No, and I don't understand why. I've changed the default gateway to the ip > of my FreeBSD machine. That would help. The NT machine needs to know which machine it can forward requests to if the IP address of the machine to which the request is directed is not on the local network. The machine that can forward requests is called a 'router' or a 'gateway' and always has two or more network interfaces. In your case, one of the network interfaces is the ISDN card isp0, the other is the actual network card that is attached to your local network. > Do I have to put something in the DNS field? I used to have the DNS to my On your NT machine, you should set the DNS field to the address your ISP has given you. (You could run your own DNS server, but that's a completely different subject and I would like to avoid that for now..) > ISP there, but I deleted them and put then in the "/etc/resolv.conf" file. > Here's a pice from the log. Nothing is routed to the isp0 device :( > > Isn't there a HOW-TO about this somewhere? > I can't be the only person having a hard time with this? :) As far as I know, there is no HOW-TO about this. Maybe, if we get this all figured out, we could write one. I'd really like to get this into some sort of HOW-TO/FAQ. All comments/experiences are welcome ! And also.. to get "ispppconfig_isp0...." to work in rc.conf I had to edit rc.network :) So I guess if you install the 0.95 drivers you dont have to change "spppconfig_isp0..." to "ispppconfig_isp0...". Something strange just happened a few minutes ago. My PBX (Euracom 180) just startet clicking with its ringing relais in about a one minute interval and didn't stop anymore :-( I power-cycled the PBX, removed the S0 cable and power-cycled again. As soon as I reconnect the power cord, it resumes its clicking. (Well, apparently having it off power for 20 minutes helped. I'd still like to know what happened) Looking at my server I found a kernel message: i4b-L1-isic_hscx_waitxfw: HSCX wait for XFW timeout!
