I'll try to go over it more thoroughly later and will let you know if it looks like anything crucial's missing. :-) Good work! -- Conrad Sabatier http://members.home.net/conrads/ ICQ# 1147270 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Tue May 16 21:28:48 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from dt051n0b.san.rr.com (dt051n0b.san.rr.com [204.210.32.11]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 21E7837B952 for ; Tue, 16 May 2000 21:28:46 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from DougB@gorean.org) Received: from gorean.org (doug@master [10.0.0.2]) by dt051n0b.san.rr.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id VAA58619; Tue, 16 May 2000 21:28:44 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from DougB@gorean.org) Message-ID: <39221FFC.FDF71BDB@gorean.org> Date: Tue, 16 May 2000 21:28:44 -0700 From: Doug Barton Organization: Triborough Bridge & Tunnel Authority X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.72 [en] (X11; U; FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT-0508 i386) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Mike Boto Cc: freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Users References: <00051511223900.01208@localhost.localdomain> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Mike Boto wrote: > > As root, is there a method to log out another user (local or remote) other than > killing the process of their shell? After creating a partition, the installation moves on to the "naming and slicing" screen. If you choose the bsd partition, then type "a", it will automatically create slices for you. IIRC, this will be 20M for /, 2xMem for swap, 50M for /var and the rest for /usr. Remember that the automatic slicing is not an all or nothing affair. You can manually create a 100M slice for /, then have the installation automatically create the rest. Or automatically create the defaults, delete the last (/usr) slice, add in another slice of your choosing (/usr/local), then automatically recreate /usr in the remainder. It's quite flexible. -- David Johnson... Don't worry if you don't see what I'm trying to ask - no sure i do either. this mail-list is blessing Thanks To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Fri May 19 13:21:46 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from odin.acuson.com (odin.acuson.com [157.226.230.71]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4FAE137B87E for ; Fri, 19 May 2000 13:21:39 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from djohnson@acuson.com) Received: from acuson.com ([157.226.69.156]) by odin.acuson.com (Netscape Messaging Server 3.54) with ESMTP id AAA64C6; Fri, 19 May 2000 13:22:49 -0700 Message-ID: <3925A283.D0FC67E3@acuson.com> Date: Fri, 19 May 2000 13:22:27 -0700 From: David Johnson Organization: Acuson X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.7 [en] (X11; I; Linux 2.2.13 i586) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: leegold Cc: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Subject: Re: couple'a'questions References: <002201bfc1cd$4e640f20$b2e47ad1@leegold1> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org leegold wrote: > 2a. please explain the differences between (the different roles played by): > xfree86 > gnome > enlightenment XFree86 is a graphical "engine" for Unix. In Windoze terms, it is roughly equivalent to the win32 api. Enlightenment is a window manager. It controls all the other windows on the screen, how they are drawn, where they are placed, etc. Under Windoze, the old progman.exe is equivalent. Gnome, KDE, XFCE and CDE are "desktop environments". They are additional tools, applications and API's on top of the window manager that give additional functionality, feel and ease-of-use. Again, under Windoze, this is roughly equivalent to the taskbar, explorer and MFC, all rolled up into one. A better comparison can be made with OS/2, which didn't try to blend all the functionality together into one homogenous mess. X is equivalent to the graphical API's, window managers are equivalent to the Presentation Manager, and Gnome is equivalent to the Workplace shell. Window managers I would heartily recommend you experiment with under FreeBSD are WindowMaker and ICE. Enlightenment is a fantastic window manager, but my personal experience with it under FreeBSD was that it was unstable. It would be better to use Sawmill with Gnome. And as for desktops, I still prefer KDE over Gnome. Under FreeBSD, Gnome continually crashed on me. But it's a snap installing and uninstalling packages with FreeBSD, so try them all out! -- David Johnson... It is also available at http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies/) FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "subscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message. Just do an FTP search for the file you can't find. After downloading the second file from an alternate location, I ran into a small problem when recompiling. One of the first statements in the header file referenced an incorrect path to it's dependant file. This is easily cured by verifying the paths to the files. Just open it up in a text editor and make sure it's where it says it is. I hope I haven't confused you with my garbled approach to explanation. Any further questions, I will do what I can. Specifically, I don't at this stage want to change the existing (NT) bootloader on the main disk. I have installed FreeBSD on my second disk, and selected the option for no bootloader. This worked fine, but I now seem to have no way of getting into FreeBSD. I assume that I need to create a boot floppy which will start FreeBSD off the hard disk. There was no option I could see in the install process to do this (I used the "novice" install type), and I can find nothing on the subject in the manual. Can anyone give me a step-by-step explanation of what I need to do? (As I say, I'm not new to Unix, but I have no experience with FreeBSD). Further down the line, I'd like to add FreeBSD as an option to my NT bootloader (I do not want to switch bootloaders, even if the FreeBSD one is better...). To do this, I should only need a suitable MBR image which I can store in a file on the NT boot drive, and I can then change NT's BOOT.INI to add FreeBSD. For later reference, can anyone tell me how I get a FreeBSD MBR? (On Linux, I install the Linux MBR on the Linux disk instead of the boot disk, and then peel it off using dd - is there an option to do this with FreeBSD?) Thanks for any help, Paul Moore. PS In case I didn't make it clear, my key requirement is to make no change at all to my existing NT disk - I want to isolate all my FreeBSD work to the second disk (at least for now). (As I > say, I'm not new to Unix, but I have no experience with FreeBSD). I have made boot floppies like this before. I'm just going to recite what I /think/ I did from memory. I might leave out a detail or two, but this is the gist of it. I think the easiest thing to do is start with the kern.flp boot floppy rather than making up a bootable floppy from scratch. # dd if=kern.flp of=/dev/rfd0 # mount /dev/fd0 /mnt # rm kernel.config kernel.gz. # cat > boot.config < In the loader.conf file on the HDD (not the boot floppy) to straighten that out. > Further down the line, I'd like to add FreeBSD as an option to my NT > bootloader (I do not want to switch bootloaders, even if the FreeBSD one is > better...). For later reference, can anyone tell me how I get a FreeBSD > MBR? (On Linux, I install the Linux MBR on the Linux disk instead of the > boot disk, and then peel it off using dd - is there an option to do this > with FreeBSD?) I don't see why you could not just use dd(1) in the exact same way if that's how you know how to do it. However, I believe the file /boot/boot0 points to the MBR. But FreeBSD has at least caught O'Reilly's attention, see: http://www.oreillynet.com/freebsd/ > I have > a few older books on 4.4BSD but we could really use some new efforts... > 'FBSD in a Nutshell', 'Teach Yourself FBSD in 20 Minutes', etc... > I'd like to see a book that starts with 'Remove the shrinkwrap, grab a > pint and a pizza...' Agree 1000%. Step by step install instuctions w/side-bars for the newbie explaining the techie aspects. eg. when everybody was taking about "slices" it took me a day or two to read-up and get that they were taking about disk partions. I'm still not 100% there on the partiton issue, but think I know enough now to go ahead w/an install. I'm convinced that if the newbies are supported and brought into the fold - FreeBSD will take-off and in turn get more 3rd party published documentation. > Jordan Hubbard is pretty good at explaining things...wish he'd take a > sabbatical and draft a tome. I think there is one - i went to thier www site and they had jpegs of group members doing some serious chowing down at an indian restaurant. But I'm game to start a group - i learn so much there and i want to post some pictures of me tearing into an overstuffed olive loaf sub. * cause the Linux groups have some FreeBSD users - or at least they're seriously interested in getting a slice up next to their Linux and trying it. File size could be further reduced by increasing .jpg compression level. In fact, why use .jpg to produce color screenshots of a two-color crt and make us wait to DL it? Well, quite frankly, it is often the newbie cutting his teeth who can write the best manual for other newbies. So, how about keeping notes on your own progress, then emailing a proposal to Tim O'Reilly, and writing a book yourself? I am not being facetious here. I bet Tim would jump on the occasion of publishing a decent FreeBSD book, especially by someone with your diverse experience in various types of Unix.
