I built a release (too a while on the PWS600au but it got there). Then created an .iso using the /usr/share/examples/worm/makecdfs.sh Subsequently ran setcdboot to make it bootable. Ran cdrecord and wrote the whole thing on CDRW. All mkisofs, setcdboot, cdrecord, done on the PWS itself. On trying to boot I get the phenomenon listed below: ALL CAPS filenames. mkisofs is version 1.14, freshly built from ports. Mounting the CD under FreeBSD produces lower case filenames like we are used to. Should be mkisofs' fault I would assume. Any clues? I going thru this exercise to be able to test CD booting on the big iron machines I have at work. Wilko OSF PAL rev: 0x1000000020116 Switch to OSF PAL code succeeded. The ISO9660 standard only supports monocase filenames containing a single '.' and a version number (similar to VMS). It should, however, understand that a request for "kernel" is matched by the file "KERNEL" that it reports - I suspect that there's a strcmp() that should be strcasecmp() somewhere in the bootloader. So yes, my sources are up to date (which, incidentaly, broke building bonobo and therefore also building gnome). I'm having difficulties building kdebase2. Or rather, it builds, but make install dumps core on kappfinder_install. kdebase2 builds wiht -O2, which according to /etc/make.conf triggers a known optimization bug on the Alpha. I therefore changed CFLAGS to use -O instead of -O2 in said file. kdebase2 still has -O2 build into it's configuration- or makefiles, but according to the gcc documentation, if multiple -O?'s are specified, the last is used. And the last is now -O. kdebase2 still complains about -O2 during compilation, but I suspect that is because it simply sees -O2 as part of the command and ignores wether or not it is the last -O? option specified. After kappfiner_install seg. faulted, I went into that directory and editet the makefiles manually. I then rebuild everything in that directory and it's subdirs, avoding the annoying -O2 warning. But it still seg. faulted. I also tried to run kappfinder (same directory), and that too seg. faulted. I supose that indicates that something is seriously wrong with the whole build. Has anyone else seen this? Your kernel needs to be installed as /boot/kernel/kernel.ko, I think. I really hate that boot loader change. If your kernel is really in /, try "/KERNEL" instead. I also think you might want to add rock-ridge to the ISOFS image. I think the problem you are seeing is due to the Alpha boot not doing the same thing that the x86 boot does (fake up a RAM-disk floppy image, from which the /kernel in the image is loaded, and the resulting system then understands rock-ridge). I don't think that anything short of doing this is going to get you booted very easily... though an obvious quick hack would be to case fold everything to upper case, which would be enough to get your kernel loaded. -- Terry To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Tue Aug 7 1:42:58 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mass.dis.org (mass.dis.org [216.240.45.41]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8C39737B417; Tue, 7 Aug 2001 01:42:52 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from msmith@mass.dis.org) Received: from mass.dis.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mass.dis.org (8.11.4/8.11.3) with ESMTP id f778jei09077; Tue, 7 Aug 2001 01:45:40 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from msmith@mass.dis.org) Message-Id: <200108070845.f778jei09077@mass.dis.org> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.1.1 10/15/1999 To: tlambert2@mindspring.com Cc: Wilko Bulte , John Baldwin , freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: problems creating 4.4-alpha test/release cdrom In-reply-to: Your message of "Tue, 07 Aug 2001 01:17:18 PDT." <3B6FA40E.A2E374EB@mindspring.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Date: Tue, 07 Aug 2001 01:45:39 -0700 From: Mike Smith Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > Wilko Bulte wrote: > > > Can you do 'load /kernel' (Note the /) and then boot? > > > > k load kernel > > don't know how to load module '/kernel.ko' > > ok load /kernel > > don't know how to load module '/kernel.ko' > > > > > If so, does 'boot /kernel' work as well? > > > > ok boot /kernel > > don't know how to load module '/kernel.ko' > > You are running the evil boot loader. > > Your kernel needs to be installed as /boot/kernel/kernel.ko, > I think. Stop thinking, Terry. It's not only bad for you, it's bad for the rest of us. The error message "don't know how to load module 'foo'" is printed when the loader has successfully found and tried to load the module, but file_load() has returned EFTYPE. Since the only file format the Alpha loader supports is ELF, and since it uses the common ELF loader in sys/boot/common/load_elf.c, and since the diagnostic above is only printed when the file loader returns EFTYPE or when no file loader is found, you can get a very short list of why the file might be being rejected: - the filename is NULL (not possible, since it's printed in the diagnostic) - the file is too small - the file header fails IS_ELF() - the file header fails sanity checks - the file is not a kernel or a KLD Most of this looks like either a cd9660 filesystem bug (quite likely) or a burn error (less likely but not impossible). I'd consider starting by seeing what "ls -l" in the loader says about the size of the file. > I also think you might want to add rock-ridge to the > ISOFS image. Stop thinking, Terry. The loader's cd9660 filesystem: /* * Stand-alone ISO9660 file reading package. * * Note: This doesn't support Rock Ridge extensions, extended attributes, * blocksizes other than 2048 bytes, multi-extent files, etc. */ > I think the problem you are seeing is due > to the Alpha boot not doing the same thing that the x86 > boot does (fake up a RAM-disk floppy image, from which > the /kernel in the image is loaded, and the resulting > system then understands rock-ridge). Stop thinking, again. 8) As long as the loader that's being loaded is 'cdboot', it ought to read the CDROM filesystem. It doesn't have anything to do with this. Isn't this the kernel he was booting fine, on the non-CDROM version of his system? I've had similar issues with the /boot/kernel/* stuff from an early 5.x snapshot, when reverting the system back to a 4.3 based release, when the boot blocks were not replaced on my hard disk after the upgrade because I didn't boot the CDROM to do the upgrade (yes, I know I'm describing a 5.x to 4.x version change as an "upgrade" here: that's the menu item in sysinstall to make the change). I think this is also the code that worked fine in the 4.x case on previous CDROM images for the Alpha... doesn't it seem more likely that he's just running stale code? > > I also think you might want to add rock-ridge to the > > ISOFS image. > > Stop thinking, Terry. But just tried [elimination Dr Watson..] the CD on my other Miata who has a different CD drive. Same problem. The logs don't say a damn thing could it be its just unstable on this PWS600au ? I'm going to re-load the OS today and possibly upgrade to 4.3-STABLE unless someone tells me otherwise. I finally got an S3 Virge Card so I might be able to run X on here. One last thing should I update the SRM bios on here if so how? I'm doing a backup right now .. after that I'm probably going to reload the OS. If anyone has any suggestions on anything I need to do before or after to make this system more stable please let me know. This isn't the first time it has happened. Thanks in advance and sorry for the length of my message. FreeBSD's root (/) fs must be in the "a" partition, and the "a" partition must be the first one on the disk. Also, you must use a BSD disklabel and no fdisk slices (eg, root is /dev/da0a and not /dev/da0s1a). The 64k limit should be enough for any sane programs there (e.g. libc on FreeBSD never reads more than a hardware page size at a time); however it is still possible that there are programs out there that will break with this change. The correct solution to this problem is to make ogetdirentries internally perform the read in small chunks. Unfortunately that would require major changes to the function, so is unlikely to get done in time for a MFC into 4.4. This should be a low-risk workaround, but please let me know if any OSF/1 executables start returning "Invalid argument" when producing directory listings etc. Ian To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Fri Aug 10 15:36:48 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from dragon.nuxi.com (dsl092-013-169.sfo1.dsl.speakeasy.net [66.92.13.169]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A84C337B406 for ; Fri, 10 Aug 2001 15:36:44 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from obrien@NUXI.com) Received: (from obrien@localhost) by dragon.nuxi.com (8.11.5/8.11.1) id f7AMaIS04402; Fri, 10 Aug 2001 15:36:18 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from obrien) Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2001 15:36:18 -0700 From: "David O'Brien" To: Wilko Bulte Cc: Andrew Gallatin , mjacob@feral.com, Jens Arnfast , freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: AlphaServer 4100 boot/install problem Message-ID: <20010810153618.A4375@dragon.nuxi.com> Reply-To: obrien@FreeBSD.ORG References: <15219.19917.412145.909189@grasshopper.cs.duke.edu> <20010809200214.R74932-100000@wonky.feral.com> <15219.21758.509480.548720@grasshopper.cs.duke.edu> <20010810085137.B13149@freebie.xs4all.nl> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5i In-Reply-To: <20010810085137.B13149@freebie.xs4all.nl>; from wkb@freebie.xs4all.nl on Fri, Aug 10, 2001 at 08:51:37AM +0200 X-Operating-System: FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT Organization: The NUXI BSD group X-Pgp-Rsa-Fingerprint: B7 4D 3E E9 11 39 5F A3 90 76 5D 69 58 D9 98 7A X-Pgp-Rsa-Keyid: 1024/34F9F9D5 Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Fri, Aug 10, 2001 at 08:51:37AM +0200, Wilko Bulte wrote: > But there is no 4.4-snap to test the install. As one datapoint, I built/installed a world cvsup'ed at 9:53am EDT today, and am seeing no problems with /boot/loader Perhaps one of the many forth files that doesn't get installed every time is to blame. Cool; personally, I don't have that many spare coasters to burn lying around, and just my laptop to burn them, so I've been a bit hesitant to jump into the forever it takes to build a release for my Alpha, since cross-build installation still doesn't work, and I can't use any of my really fast machines. -- Terry To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Sat Aug 11 13: 5:25 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from srv1.cosmo-project.de (srv1.cosmo-project.de [213.83.6.106]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 19A9C37B408 for ; Sat, 11 Aug 2001 13:05:21 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from ticso@mail.cicely.de) Received: from mail.cicely.de (cicely20 [10.1.1.22]) by srv1.cosmo-project.de (8.11.0/8.11.0) with ESMTP id f7BK5I328425; Sat, 11 Aug 2001 22:05:18 +0200 (CEST) Received: (from ticso@localhost) by mail.cicely.de (8.11.0/8.11.0) id f7BK5KR04636; Sat, 11 Aug 2001 22:05:20 +0200 (CEST) Date: Sat, 11 Aug 2001 22:05:20 +0200 From: Bernd Walter To: Matthew Jacob Cc: Wilko Bulte , Andrew Gallatin , Jens Arnfast , freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: AlphaServer 4100 boot/install problem Message-ID: <20010811220519.B4304@cicely20.cicely.de> References: <20010810193956.C15024@freebie.xs4all.nl> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5i In-Reply-To: ; from mjacob@feral.com on Fri, Aug 10, 2001 at 10:40:48AM -0700 X-Operating-System: NetBSD cicely20.cicely.de 1.5 sparc Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Fri, Aug 10, 2001 at 10:40:48AM -0700, Matthew Jacob wrote: > > I've had no time - I also haven't tried a make release yet. Did anyone read my bloody reply to Terry on this topic? The problem here is that what the loader is reading out of the file is wrong. The ELF code in the loader is rejecting the read data. Wilko has confirmed that the CD itself is fine. Huston, we have a loader filesystem problem... Please, try using 'more' in the loader to read a large (>8k) text document from somewhere; one of the loader's 4th files would do it. Make sure it looks right. -- ... every activity meets with opposition, everyone who acts has his rivals and unfortunately opponents also.
