It is pity that Samusung has not marketed up1100 widely. As for 4.4-RELEASE on up1100, I noticed some inconviniences. They are related to scsi and ethernet. I tested NCR53C895 based cards from LSI. (1) When `shutdowon -r now' is invoked, the system hangs in the middle of reboot---scsi tests freezes the system. This happens with the symbios driver. (2) If the ncr driver is applied, with symbios disabled in the kernel, then in the middle of reboot (by `shutdown -r now' as in the above) the dc0 (up1100's onboard nic) starts complaining that "dc0 watchdog timeout", so that the system cannot be connected to the network. So, right now, I cannot do remote reboot of the system. Please note that the above two were not observed when I was running 4.3 on it. It seems they do not take place on my AlphaPC164 boxes, either. So I reset the system with no CD inside and at the >>> prompt doing 'sh dev' it could see the DKA100 CDROM device. Now if I insert the CD and make 'boot DKA100' the system won't boot but it first wants to reset then when it will restart it won't recognize hte DKA100 device which look like disappeared! To make it work I had to reboot without the FreeBSD CD inside and while it fails to boot from CDROM (no cd inside) if I insert the CD then and only then the system will boot. Seems like that the FreeBSD CDROM make the srm console fool I do not know why. any ideas?? thanks Rick To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Thu Sep 27 15: 5:15 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from welshfantasyfootball.com (host48.tns.co.uk [194.152.91.114]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 2EF3337B401 for ; Thu, 27 Sep 2001 15:05:12 -0700 (PDT) From: "Claire" To: Subject: Cash Prizes Win! Several items in the ports tree have tried to us -O2 with g++ which results in a warning that there are known bugs with that optimization level on this platform. I've removed them as I encounter them and everything works fine. However, when I did a make for kde2, I ran into a severe problem during one of its dependencies. Adter the warning, g++ actually crashed. I removed the -O2 flag from the makefile and reran make. g++ still crashes. Thus it would appear kde2 in theports tree can not be compiled in its current state on Alpha. Included below is the relevant area of the make process. Even though this is a gcc bug, I figured the people subscribed to the Alpha list should know about this. If anyone else has run into this and come up with a solution, please let me know. If I come up with anything, I'll let the list know. Thanks. In general, gcc seems to do much better when it is allowed to use the bwx instructions. In fact, even if you don't have a machine that does bwx instructions, it is safe to turn them on for files that crash gcc -- FreeBSD will emulate bwx instructions on non-bwx hardware This is slow, but if you are desparate.. FWIW, kde is dog-slow on alpha. Konqueror takes about 45 seconds from invocation to the first appearance of a window (its the only kde app running, so it has to start a bunch of kde goop). To switch from the default file-browser mode it comes up in to a web page takes roughly 20 seconds. This is on a 600MHz UP1000 (ev67) with 450MB free after Konqueror is launched. Somehow it still ends up with -O2 in the Makefiles that the configure script builds. g++ gives a big warning about known optimizer bugs on this platform with that switch. Now does this mean gcc might crash while compiling or that it may produce bad object code? I've always tried to edit that flag out of makefiles, but this damn thing has a makefile in every subdirectory so I'd have to edit several dozen.
