The idea was that there were a number of devices that are listed as supported in the alpha hardware notes, just because no set of supported architectures was explicitly specified for them. While not a huge problem for the current state of FreeBSD, I'm looking forward to where we'll need to support a few more architectures, and we'll need to be more definitive about what devices are supported for each architecture. Based largely on the drivers in the alpha GENERIC kernel configuration, as well as Wilko's alpha-specific documentation, I've made up a patch for CURRENT's hardware notes to try to disambiguate some of the entries (i.e. try to add arch= attributes to more of the devices supported). Could some people "in the know" about the alpha give me some feedback? Thanks! Bruce. The FORE Systems, Inc. PCA-200E ATM PCI Adapters (hfa driver) does not work on alpha on -stable and shouldn't appear on the hardware release notes for alpha. IIRC a compile time error due to some missing initialisation. I planned to investigate this a bit further, but didn't have the time for it sofar. I don't know about the ENI-155p. Now that we have our AlphaServer 2100's working... we have run into another problem... I am trying to get either KDE or GNOME running on our 5.0-CURRENT boxes. I am wondering if anyone has had success with this, or if the ports are known to be broken. I am just trying to get some kind of "touchy-feely" GUI for some of the guys here at work so they can get their first brush with BSD. Well, if we only list one, it should be 'tested'. If we are going to list both, then the 'expected to just-work' items should be either tagged as such or listed in a separate section. I'm trying to keep things on the granularity of drivers (or driver and bus combinations) if possible, rather than specific models of devices. Clearly, the more fine-grained we try to go, the more accurate we are, but it's also a lot more work, and it requires a lot more information. Personally, I'm about at the limit of my knowledge on the alpha platform. Bruce. PS. Thanks to everyone who's given feedback on my patch so far. This page has been around since way before alpha was stabbed in the back by Compaq. When my wife was looking for an alpha (in June) we could see this web page, but couldn't buy the motherboard anywhere. She finally got a dual-cpu Athlon. These systems might really exist now; they have been up on the specials page at Hard Data (http://www.harddata.com/specials.html). Here in Japan, a few system vendors have started shipping up1500 based Linux boxes to the market. Their price is, for a minimum configuration, about 800K yen. (120yen=1USD). At the same time, some vendors stopped marketing Alpha-based systems, and they shiftted to P4 based clusters market. I have been talking with one of suppliers, if they can sell just motherboard with cpu. Unfortunately, I have got no reply from them yet. As far as I heard from sales staff, up1500 boards are manufactured on order basis, so that total supply might be limitted, and that it is hard decision for them to continue Alpha because its development is finished in 2004. What comes after AXP? If nothing, ... pity! Where did you get the manual? I'd like to see it.. If the UP1500 is like the UP1[01]00, then more than 2GB should not be a problem. Here's why: The problem that we run into for more than 1GB or 2GB of ram is that most non-scsi FreeBSD drivers do not take advantage of busdma. This means they cannot use the scatter/gather facilities built into most alpha pci chipsets, and they must use the direct map. This direct map is limited to 1 or 2 GB (platform dependent). The scatter/gather facilities are a two edged sword. On one hand, they allow 32-bit PCI devices to DMA to any address in a machine with more than 4GB of RAM (assuming the driver has used busdma to create an entry in the chipset's s/g hardware corresponding to that address). On the other hand, they limit the size of the direct map (non s/g dma) to something less than the 4GB which would normally be addressable by a 32-bit pci device. The interesting thing about the UP1[01]00 (and I suspect the UP1500) is that they use what is essentially an Athlon chipset which has no s/g hardware. This means that the size of the direct map is 4GB. Of course, it also means that ISA dma must be done via bounce buffers like it is on x86, not via s/g mappings like on most other alpha platforms. We may run into more problems with bounce buffer allocation (like you first saw with 768MB on your UP1100) as we increase the memory size. I think most of these problems were fixed when I changed where the vm_page_array and vm_page_buckets were allocated from to fix bounce buffer allocation last spring. So you have to download the 4.4-RELEASE installation floppies and to replace the kernel from the kern.flp with this new one. After this you can boot and install (hopefully) your alpha server (it worked for us). Than you can boot this floppy and you are on your way to install FreeBSD 4.4-RELEASE.
