That was a hack... but at the time it was about all I could do with our config. (I'm aware of the relatively new Cyrus-sasl MySQL support, and that it requires passwords to be stored in plaintext. Bad idea). Anyways, on to the meat of the issue.. I'm grepping for solutions, here... We've got a custom MySQL database with customer info, logins, passwords, etc, that we auth several services against... Something like 99.8% of our customers use POP for mail, so if we lose IMAP support for our customers, they could care less, and we can still run Cyrus on another box. My requirements, in a nutshell, are for a POP email system that will auth against a custom MySQL database (using MD5 passwords), that can easily scale to a few thousand users. Something with an automated way to add/remove mailboxes would be a major plus, as would per-user mailbox quotas (but we can enforce our own quotas). Any ideas? PAM modules can authenticate against the UNIX password file (pam_unix.so), Kerberos, MySQL (pam_mysql.so.. /usr/ports/security/pam-mysql), etc. Applications that support PAM basically just use the library with a standard set of calls to request authentication. Which PAM module(s) is/are used to authenticate a user is defined, on a per-service basis, in /etc/pam.conf I'm sure this is all documented somewhere... man 5 pam.conf would be a good place to start. - Ryan -- Ryan Thompson Network Administrator, Accounts SaskNow Technologies - http://www.sasknow.com #106-380 3120 8th St E - Saskatoon, SK - S7H 0W2 Tel: 306-664-3600 Fax: 306-664-1161 Saskatoon Toll-Free: 877-727-5669 (877-SASKNOW) North America To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isp Sat Dec 29 11: 7:19 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from catalyst.sasknow.net (catalyst.sasknow.net [207.195.92.130]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4DF7B37B405 for ; Sat, 29 Dec 2001 11:07:14 -0800 (PST) Received: from localhost (ryan@localhost) by catalyst.sasknow.net (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id fBTJ71O10702; Sat, 29 Dec 2001 13:07:01 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from ryan@sasknow.com) X-Authentication-Warning: catalyst.sasknow.net: ryan owned process doing -bs Date: Sat, 29 Dec 2001 13:07:01 -0600 (CST) From: Ryan Thompson X-X-Sender: To: John Brooks Cc: Subject: RE: Rebuilding mail server In-Reply-To: <000601c1901f$9d804660$1505010a@daylight.net> Message-ID: <20011229130557.F99302-100000@catalyst.sasknow.net> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org John Brooks wrote to freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG: > teapop seems to have a multitude of options, it's in the ports. > > http://www.toontown.org/teapop/ > > anybody have any experience with it? That has *definitely* been considered, and, for what it's worth, that's where things are headed at the moment. I've already prototyped pam_mysql.so with Cyrus, and have modified some existing scripts of mine to change the way email users are added and removed from the system. It appears to be working *very* smoothly on the PII-400 test system... And it wasn't a difficult setup by any means. Performance appears to be very good, but I'm still awaiting some load test results (measure time taken to create several thousand accounts, determine email throughput at various traffic levels, test login concurrency limits, etc, etc, etc...) I had considered running two mail systems anyway (one customer mail server, and one internal staff server for employees and shared IMAP folders), and I still might, for a combination of business/performance reasons, but Cyrus DOES have some good features for customer email. Namely, quotas, configurable mail check delay (set to 1 minute to avoid the users who flood the server checking mail repeatedly), and a Perl API to administer mailboxes. Not to mention the IMAP support makes it work very well with IMP for web mail. - Ryan -- Ryan Thompson Network Administrator, Accounts SaskNow Technologies - http://www.sasknow.com #106-380 3120 8th St E - Saskatoon, SK - S7H 0W2 Tel: 306-664-3600 Fax: 306-664-1161 Saskatoon Toll-Free: 877-727-5669 (877-SASKNOW) North America To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isp Sat Dec 29 11:50:31 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from cody.jharris.com (cody.jharris.com [205.238.128.83]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 53FD237B41E for ; Sat, 29 Dec 2001 11:50:05 -0800 (PST) Received: from localhost (nick@localhost) by cody.jharris.com (8.11.1/8.9.3) with ESMTP id fBTJo3P24819; Sat, 29 Dec 2001 13:50:03 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from nick@rogness.net) Date: Sat, 29 Dec 2001 13:50:02 -0600 (CST) From: Nick Rogness X-Sender: nick@cody.jharris.com To: Noah Davidson Cc: freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: PAM In-Reply-To: Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Fri, 28 Dec 2001, Noah Davidson wrote: > I have been reading about PAM. The Application must make a call to PAM for authentication and look at the response to see if it is successfull. It kinda works like this: 1) Application sends authentication request to PAM (including username/password/etc) 2) A PAM module, configured in /etc/pam.conf for the app, tries to authenticate them using the method specified for the module, eg pam_mysql.so uses MySQL, pam_unix.so uses unix password file, etc. 3) If the PAM module (in above step) is successful, it returns PAM_SUCCESS flag back to the application. Otherwise it returns a PAM error. 4) The application must look at the returned flag to see if it is PAM_SUCCESS or error and take appropriate action.
