Both DN and FBSDMall do a lot for the community in different way, so its hard to say that one supports the FBSD project better than the other. However, we are both committed to BSD in a very real way. Both have members of their companies on the FBSD core team, so you know that they stay involved with what FBSD is doing as a project. Both companies work very hard at promoting BSD both online and in the retail channel. So, really no matter who you choose, BSD wins. With DN, the efforts get spread over all BSD, since we don't focus on FBSD. With FBSDMall, they also to slackware, so I am sure some of their funds go to help that, but that is how it has always been. (CDRom.com always did slackware) As for disk quality, we had a rough start. Our 4.5 disks were outsourced to a manufactured that we will never use again. We have learned from that experience and our 4.6 disks are exceptional if I do say so myself. We have also upgraded the packaging and put a lot of effort in to making them worth buying. The FBSD Mall folks have been doing this for years, so they have a lot more experience than us, so their stuff will be the usual high quality. So, there aren't many reasons to buy one over the other and no matter which you buy you support the community. Both should be of the same high quality and use the same CD masters from the official project. The real difference is in packaging and I really like ours. ;-) Chris Coleman Editor in Chief Daemon News E-Zine http://www.daemonnews.org Print Magazine http://magazine.daemonnews.org BSD Mall http://www.bsdmall.com On Tue, 9 Jul 2002, Lewis Kapell wrote: > I would like to get folks' opinion about which vendor is better to get > the 4.6 CD-ROM set from, Daemon News or FreeBSD Mall. Your new disk set in its easy-open box is exceptional, and I really like the usr-friendly install leaflet. I had cancelled my old subscription when WRS made such a nightmare of FreeBSD fulfilment, and switched to Chris' organization. When Bob Bruce's FreeBSDMall took over, they re-activated not one but two old subscription accounts. I therefore now have three copies of 4.6 and all are high-quality CDs. When I complained in my usual subtle and gentle way (yeah, right!), LeLaine in FreeBSDMall's CS group insisted on refunding both charges and requested that I donate the CD's to schools even after I requested that she only refund one and stop the extra subscriptions. I give exceptionally high marks to both organizations for quality, service and support of our Cause. Bob Bruce is the original commercial sparkplug who paid core members like Jordan Hubbard to take FreeBSD from curiosity to the rock-solid commercial platform it is today, and Chris and Susannah Coleman have lived and breathed Daemon News from its inception. [Have your baby's horns started sprouting yet, Chris? ;-)] We are blessed to have these fine companies to deal with. I haven't dealt with FreeBSD Services, but I do recognize its founder as a contributor as well, and I'm sure they are likewise a valuable supporter. Some people may see the recent shakeout/up/exodus as a troubling sign for FreeBSD, but I am confident that these commercial vendors (and the 501c3 FreeBSD Foundation!) will all continue the tradition of providing high-quality products and support for our favorite computer productivity tool. BUT, right after I followed up wondering why, the situation was resolved. Chris and Greg worked very well with me, making sure that my order was sent to me with the utmost care and importance. After talking with Chris on the phone, who apologised more than he should have (but what company rep doesn't in this case) everything worked out perfectly. In fact, i'm currently wearing one of the shirts I picked up at DN. I see no reason to choose one over the other other than preferance, perhaps you like someone at DN, or know personally someone at the mall. Maybe you have ordered from both in past and were pleased with the service, or the prices are cheaper at one place over the other. If you want my opinion, I choose DN because I wanted a subscription to the magazine at the same time, if I didn't need that (or wanted different products) I would have went to the Mall. So, after all that rambling, I think you shouldn't really base it on what other people think, yet more what you want, perhaps one of the companies are closer to you, but as for their quality, from what i'm told, they are both very good, and personal experiance has not proven otherwise. If its being delivered to a continental US address, and it's not there by the 16th, I'd say you have cause to find out what the delay is. Orders outside the continental US always take longer. After that, they all get shipped UPS Ground for US residentail customers. And, like I said before, UPS says they dropped it on your front porch yesterday. ;-) So, if you don't have it, start questioning the neighbors. -Chris To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-advocacy" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-advocacy Wed Jul 10 0:14:45 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CEDDB37B400 for ; Wed, 10 Jul 2002 00:14:43 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mail.freebsdmall.com (www.freebsdmall.com [66.220.2.194]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9A33E43E52 for ; Wed, 10 Jul 2002 00:14:33 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from rab@www.freebsdmall.com) Received: from www (www [127.0.0.1]) by mail.freebsdmall.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 775672E883; Wed, 10 Jul 2002 00:14:28 -0700 (PDT) To: freebsd-advocacy@FreeBSD.ORG Cc: rab@freebsdmall.com Subject: Re: buying FreeBSD In-Reply-To: Your message of "Tue, 09 Jul 2002 11:04:28 EDT." <20020709105646.X590-100000@lewis> Date: Wed, 10 Jul 2002 00:14:28 -0700 From: Robert Bruce Message-Id: <20020710071428.775672E883@mail.freebsdmall.com> Sender: owner-freebsd-advocacy@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG Lewis Kapell said... >I would like to get folks' opinion about which vendor is better to get >the 4.6 CD-ROM set from, Daemon News or FreeBSD Mall.
