I'm not one of them, though. :-) I actually prefer > ``the X Window System'' in text, but tend to verbalize that as ``X > Windows'' -- I guess that is how it got there. I think that most people do. For example in writing I call it "X" while speaking I will say "X Windows." Why, most people that are in the IT business that I speak to in person are not what I would consider true techies and therefore would not understand just X or would look at me funny when I say X Window System, causing the conversation to go off onto a tangent, something I cannot afford on my busy schedule. -- Cheers, Phone: 250-387-8437 Cy Schubert Fax: 250-387-5766 Team Leader, Sun/Alpha Team Email: Cy.Schubert@osg.gov.bc.ca Open Systems Group, CITS Ministry of Management Services Province of BC FreeBSD UNIX: cy@FreeBSD.org To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-chat" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-chat Sun Jun 2 10:56:33 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org Received: from hub.FreeBSD.org (ppp-62-235-225-245.tiscali.be [62.235.225.245]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 331C137B401 for ; A UP kernel will leave out some of the overhead, but SMPng fundamentally changes the way you protect data in the kernel against interrupt handlers as well as from other threads on other CPU's (basically we are now solving that problem in a more general case) so you can't just turn it all off. -- John Baldwin <>< http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/ "Power Users Use the Power to Serve!" - http://www.FreeBSD.org/ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-chat" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-chat Thu Jun 6 17:23: 7 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org Received: from kanga.honeypot.net (kanga.honeypot.net [208.162.254.122]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4455037B41D; Thu, 6 Jun 2002 17:22:59 -0700 (PDT) Received: from pooh.int (mail@pooh.int [10.0.1.2]) by kanga.honeypot.net (8.12.3/8.12.3) with ESMTP id g570MqX5075703; Thu, 6 Jun 2002 19:22:53 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from kirk@strauser.com) Received: from kirk by pooh.int with local (Exim 3.35 #1 (Debian)) id 17G7Wm-0005VN-00; Thu, 06 Jun 2002 19:22:52 -0500 To: Christopher Schulte Cc: bmah@freebsd.org, freebsd-chat@freebsd.org Subject: Re: HEADS UP: RELENG_4_6 branch created References: <200206061755.g56HtoRR087127@intruder.bmah.org> <200206061622.g56GMQRW084892@intruder.bmah.org> <200206061755.g56HtoRR087127@intruder.bmah.org> <5.1.1.6.2.20020606181527.03962ec8@pop3s.schulte.org> From: Kirk Strauser Date: 06 Jun 2002 19:22:52 -0500 In-Reply-To: <5.1.1.6.2.20020606181527.03962ec8@pop3s.schulte.org> Message-ID: <878z5sdjj7.fsf@pooh.int> Lines: 10 X-Mailer: Gnus/5.09 (Gnus v5.9.0) Emacs/21.2 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-freebsd-chat@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org At 2002-06-06T23:19:57Z, Christopher Schulte writes: > http://www.schulte.org/audio/parodies/mp3/anewversion(FreeBSD46).mp3 Dear Lord, I think my ears are bleeding. Also, for what it's worth, SVR4.2 MP was significantly faster on UP than SVR4.0.2 UP. The number one reason for this was concurrency of operations that came about from kernel preemption and subsystem reentrancy (and specifically, the FS and networking, but to a lesser extent, other subsystems). Overall, if everything ends up going correctly, turning off the SMP stuff would actually give you *worse* UP performance. -- Terry To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-chat" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-chat Thu Jun 6 18:29:15 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org Received: from chat.ru (pax2-168.cis.ru [212.109.194.168]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 2365537B407; Thu, 6 Jun 2002 18:28:55 -0700 (PDT) From: Saber Software Subject: Looking for software development alternatives? I am posting this here due to signal/noise ratio on -jobs being so low. Flame me if you will. :) I am currently looking for work in the Washington, D.C. area and would love to find a job working with FreeBSD. At my last job, I was lucky enough that I could use FreeBSD (or anything else I wanted) for anything. As a result, I built a FreeBSD firewall, a FreeBSD file server (Samba), FreeBSD name servers, FreeBSD backup servers (wrote custom backup software), and so forth. It was great! But searching for "bsd" on Monster.com, CareerBuilder.com, and WashingtonJobs.com, returns no matches. So I hope that someone reading this needs a BSD geek in Washington. You can find my resume in both Word and plain text at http://www.well.com/~howardjp/howardjp2002.doc http://www.well.com/~howardjp/howardjp2002.txt If someone is interested, please write. As a side note, I think it would be fantastic if DaemonNews would put together a BSD job search service (*HINT*). Let me ask a question. It is very trivial but I have been wondering for a long time. Mr. Charlie Root seems to have root account on so many FreeBSD systems. :) I wonder why the default name for root user in /etc/passwd is `Charlie &' and not John, Jack, Dick, Harry, etc. Can someone explain why (and when) this became the default? Maybe, it is just a common expression in English, but I do not know English so much.
