My understanding is that you can read from them an unlimited number of times, it's only the number of times you can write to them that's limited. The last set of flash cards I got were limited to a million write cycles, iirc. --- David To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Sun Dec 22 8: 4:52 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C68DB37B401 for ; Sun, 22 Dec 2002 08:04:50 -0800 (PST) Received: from fiinbeck.math.ntnu.no (fiinbeck.math.ntnu.no [129.241.15.140]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 2A79243EDA for ; Sun, 22 Dec 2002 08:04:49 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from hanche@math.ntnu.no) Received: (qmail 96973 invoked from network); 22 Dec 2002 16:04:47 -0000 Received: from localhost (127.0.0.1) by localhost with SMTP; 22 Dec 2002 16:04:47 -0000 To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Subject: Re: tripwire on compact flash In-Reply-To: References: X-Mailer: Mew version 1.94.2 on Emacs 21.2 / Mule 5.0 (SAKAKI) X-URL: http://www.math.ntnu.no/~hanche/ Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Message-Id: <20021222170447D.hanche@math.ntnu.no> Date: Sun, 22 Dec 2002 17:04:47 +0100 From: Harald Hanche-Olsen X-Dispatcher: imput version 20000228(IM140) Lines: 31 Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org + David Miller : | On Sat, 21 Dec 2002, randall ehren wrote: | | > hi, | > i setup a freebsd system running off of a compact flash card. i | > know that CF cards have a limited life of read & writes so i | > wanted to know if running tripwire on the card was a bad idea...? | | It's fine if you have it mounted read only virtually all the time. | You don't say what you're using the system for, so we really can't | guess whether that's possible or not. I have one of those tiny 256 MB devices that plug into a USB port. I use it to move data between home and work, amongst other things. So for me, it usually doesn't make sense to mount it read only. What I do, however, is to use the noatime option. That way, I can at least read files with reckless abandon without causing any extraneous writes, I hope. I worry about "using up" the superblocks and possibly the location of the root directory, however. Would using softupdates be likely to decrease the amount of writing to those areas, and so perhaps increase the lifetime of the device? Any other tricks? Here is one: I have a (little used, but still handy) 32 MB MSDOS file system in the first slice. I'm planning to repartition the device once in a while, each time changing the size of the initial slice in order to move the most used areas in the FreeBSD slice around. - Harald To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Sun Dec 22 13:30: 1 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A9E7B37B401 for ; Sun, 22 Dec 2002 13:30:00 -0800 (PST) Received: from nollie.summersault.com (nollie.summersault.com [208.10.44.140]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 03A3643EE6 for ; Sun, 22 Dec 2002 13:30:00 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from mark-dated-1041456589.747b61@summersault.com) Received: (qmail 23527 invoked from network); 22 Dec 2002 21:29:49 -0000 Received: from localhost (HELO nollie.summersault.com) (127.0.0.1) by localhost with SMTP; 22 Dec 2002 21:29:49 -0000 Date: Sun, 22 Dec 2002 16:29:46 -0500 (EST) To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Subject: kudzu auto-hardware detection on FreeBSD Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII From: Mark Stosberg X-Delivery-Agent: TMDA/0.65 (Johnstown) Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hello, Recently I tried out the Knoppix 3.1 Demo Linux demo CD ( http://www.knoppix.com ). Running entirely of the CD drive, this impressive system booted directly into a KDE session, configuring the keyboard, mouse, video, sound and network correctly, automatically, without user intervention. I've now run the demo on 2 desktops and a laptop, and it correctly configured the machines in each case, despite the hardware differences. The backbone of this hardware detection is "kudzu", developed by RedHat, with a homepage here: http://rhlinux.redhat.com/kudzu/ The remaining work was provided by a "mkxf86config" shell script and a template XF86Config file. My question is- how hard would it be to get something like this working on FreeBSD? It would be great for Demo CDs, and especially for configuring desktop systems, where getting X setup still seems to be a chore. I have mailed them myself already, but would ask that anyone else interested in seeing them develop native FreeBSD drivers for the new card contact insales@matrox.com. Reading documentation on the Linux driverset, it looks like they would just need to port the kernel module to support Bus Mastering, so this really isn't asking a lot of them. If anyone has the knowhow and time to help them with the port, I'm sure it would further the cause :) - Robin To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Thu Dec 26 0:50: 6 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4340A37B401 for ; Thu, 26 Dec 2002 00:50:03 -0800 (PST) Received: from news.lucky.net (news.lucky.net [193.193.193.102]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E6D8B43EA9 for ; Thu, 26 Dec 2002 00:50:00 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from slavex@smau.com.ua) Received: (from mail@localhost) by news.lucky.net (8.Who.Cares/8.Who.Cares) id KTF18539 for freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org; Thu, 26 Dec 2002 10:49:58 +0200 (envelope-from slavex@smau.com.ua) From: "Vyacheslav S. The motherboard has 3 (!) IDE sockets, identified as primary, secondary, and tertiary. The unit we received was cabled as follows: Two hard drives attached to the primary socket with an 80-conductor cable; CD-ROM attached to the secondary socket with a 40-conductor cable; nothing attached to the tertiary socket. Since FreeBSD hung at boot time with two drives on the primary cable, I tried shifting the second hard drive to the "tertiary" socket, adding an 80-pin cable just for it. Alas, FreeBSD couldn't see the drive, or even the third ATA interface, when this was done. (Yes, it was enabled in the BIOS.) We got the machine to run FreeBSD and see both drives, but only by disconnecting the CD-ROM. Since the Dell is one of the least expensive and most popular low end server platforms, and does run Red Hat, it's important that FreeBSD support it properly as well. Has anyone else worked with this model of machine? Or if I gave you an account on one, could you snoop around from a distance? --Brett To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Fri Dec 27 15:55:17 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9F7EF37B401 for ; Fri, 27 Dec 2002 15:55:15 -0800 (PST) Received: from mail.johnrshannon.com (mail.johnrshannon.com [208.141.183.125]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 19DAB43EC5 for ; Fri, 27 Dec 2002 15:55:15 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from john@johnrshannon.com) Received: by mail.johnrshannon.com (Postfix, from userid 1003) id CA8CF1248A; Fri, 27 Dec 2002 16:55:14 -0700 (MST) Received: from pablo.johnrshannon.com (pablo.johnrshannon.com [192.168.1.3]) by mail.johnrshannon.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 71EA012486 for ; Fri, 27 Dec 2002 16:55:14 -0700 (MST) Received: from pablo.johnrshannon.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by pablo.johnrshannon.com (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id gBRNtEuk002516 for ; Fri, 27 Dec 2002 16:55:14 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from john@pablo.johnrshannon.com) Received: (from john@localhost) by pablo.johnrshannon.com (8.12.6/8.12.6/Submit) id gBRNtE5m002515 for freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org; Fri, 27 Dec 2002 16:55:14 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from john) Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" From: "John R. The hardware is a chassis of 6 PCs in a 3U case. Each blade has two Broadcom BCM5703 interfaces. Unfortunately, its behaviour is rather non-deterministic. The dmesg output follows. As you see, there are two bge0s (!) and neither has an associated PHY. It's not always like this, however. Sometimes it boots fine, both interfaces are detected OK and one can proceed to do an NFS install of the minimal distribution set. Once the interface has been configured, it seems to be stable. Let's hear it for KASSERT()! # ifconfig bge0 up panic: bge_stop: mii is NULL Here's the offending bit from sys/dev/bge/if_bge.c (KASSERTs added by me) if (!sc->bge_tbi) { KASSERT(ifp != NULL, ("bge_stop: ifp is NULL")); itmp = ifp->if_flags; ifp->if_flags |= IFF_UP; KASSERT(mii != NULL, ("bge_stop: mii is NULL")); ifm = mii->mii_media.ifm_cur; KASSERT(ifm != NULL, ("bge_stop: ifm is NULL")); mtmp = ifm->ifm_media; ifm->ifm_media = IFM_ETHER|IFM_NONE; mii_mediachg(mii); ifm->ifm_media = mtmp; ifp->if_flags = itmp; } So, the problem is that at boot-time, the kernel is not getting a PHY driver, be it a brgphy, or a ukphy attached to the miibus.
